At home, it is safe for up to a week, but I have found that the flavor/texture does not really improve much beyond three days. Besides, I can't look at a steak for more than three days before eating it.
Well, so long as it's not past the expiration date it should be fine

Re: How To Cook A Good Steak?

I live in an apartment that doesn't allow BBQ grilling. We have a George foreman grill, but it's a small one.

I cook mine in the oven with Montreal Steak seasoning...after seasoning, I spray it with an olive oil cooking spray...I figured the "oil" content would help prevent too much moisture from evaporating.

If stir frying beef strips in a pan, I always use butter...yummy!

There is nothing like a big juicy steak when you are craving one or can afford one. Has anyone noticed the price of meat these days. But anwyay, I agree with the grill method. yummm!!!

Yeah, meat can be pretty expensive. I only buy my meat at BJ's wholesale...they seem to have the best prices. The meat is in bulk, but overall we save lots of money.

Re: How To Cook A Good Steak?

I, too, swing for cheaper beef. I also always buy the "marked down" packs. It takes a good little while for beef to really "go bad". If you know you have bought a tougher cut, like the little eye of round steaks, marinate in something with a higher acid content (i.e. italian dressing) It helps break down the conective tissues.

When grilling or pan searing, I poke the steak with my finger to test it's temperature (well, medium, rare, whatever) If it still feels pretty squishy all the way through, it's rare. If it feels firm but with a squishy center, it's probably medium, pretty firm feeling, through and through, it's knocking on well done. It's hard to give an exact time for steaks because it will vary with steak thickness. I like wrapping a crushed peppercorn coated sirloin in bacon (preferabley applewood smoked bacon *drool*) so that it criss-crosses both sides and pan searing it. I also like mine still kicking when it hits the plate. and I second Joy on giving your steak a "rest" before cutting. the same goes with London Broils. That's my second favorite beef cut. Soooo very versatile!! And Montreal Steak seasoning is such a wonderful gift to the world! I use it in meatloaf as well. Ugh, yeah, now I am hungry!

would something like the george foreman grill be the second to best thing to use for grilling a steak when outdoors is not an option? with winter coming up i'm thinking of investing on something like such for grilling indoors. TIA

Re: How To Cook A Good Steak?

I love the foreman grill (or any brand)...it does a good job, and cooks quicker because you are cooking from both sides at the same time.

If an outdoor grill isn't available, my second choice would be the foreman.

Re: How To Cook A Good Steak?

Im a bonified steak expert from the heart of beef country!!! You mentioned juicy and that screams RIBEYE!! Nice marbled and soft to the touch. Don't put any salt on it before cooking, it draws the juice out. Preheat the grill on high for about 5 minutes before you slap the meaty pink goodness on, this will sear in the tasty goodness. I prefer mine rare, like cold inside rare but if you want medium you'll need to turn the grill to medium and you'll know when the steak is just at the right cookedness when the red juices start to pool on top. Now here comes the most critical part of steaky beefy juicy heaven. Melt just a tiny bit of butter in a bowl and spread on a small amount of it on one side, then sprinkle on a bit of Steak Mates seasoning or Spike is good too, then flip and repeat.

Okay, you're not going to believe his one without trying it, but I never make a steak anymore without coffee grounds. We have a grinder and whir it up until they are powder, but you can use the grinder in a store and set it for the finest grind. We saw it years ago on a cowboy-themed cooking show and have done this ever since. It also acts to tenderize the meat. Everybody loves them. It's our "secret ingredient" but I don't mind sharing with you guys!

do you add the coffee grounds to the marinade or coat the steaks with them (like peppered steaks) before cooking?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: How To Cook A Good Steak?

I just coat the steaks with the grinds. Sometimes, it sets in the fridge for a few minutes before we grill, but I don't actually marinate.

Re: How To Cook A Good Steak?

Some basic rules I follow to make a great steak on the grille are

always let your grille pre heat on high for 10 - 12 mins

Turn your grille down to medium when putting the steak on the grille

for average cuts cook for 16 mins (if the meat is thawed) and turn once (turn at 8 mins and let it cook on that side for 8 mins) For thicker cuts extend it out a couple of mins so cook for 18-20 mins.

Keep the flames away from your meat.

Dont be afraid to make a cut in the middle of the meat to make sure the meat is done how you like it (your not a resturaunt no one will care )

I use to be pretty bad at steaks until I started following these rules
I havent had a non perfect steak since.

Seen this article and made me think back to this thread. Anyone still looking for steak ideas? No meat on Friday for me during Lent but reading the article did make my mouth water.
