  • worst diet advice?

OK so I'm curious about what other people have heard or tried in the past.

What's the worst diet plan you've ever seen? What's the worst dieting advice you've ever received? What's the worst article you've read about Atkins?

The worst thing I saw was this 6-week plan, online of course. The first two weeks are "low-carb" (basically a meat/egg fast), the second two weeks are "low fat" (so you eat all carbohydrates, basically), and the third two weeks was a cabbage soup plan--cabbage soup, everyday, for 2 weeks. And people actually tried this stuff--their comments were all like "yeah, it's unhealthy, but it's only 6 weeks." Scary stuff.

The worst advice I've ever received is that low-fat is the only way to go! I know some people are successful on those plans, but they're certainly not for my body...

I would agree with you as well. Any trick diet has got to have signs of future failure written all over it. My worst would be any diet that treated weight loss as the end itself without focusing on relearning how to eat or perhaps the ones that have you taken things like Stacker or ephedra-based products. Make the dieter dependent (physically or mentally) on the product, but never address the eating part of the diet. Most any other diet plans I could support as different strokes for different folks, but tricks and pills have got to go.

oh i was told one time to do the cabbage soup diet, too.

the thought of doing cabbage soup all week nearly made me sick! i like cabbage but give me break!

and btw, the person who told me that did the diet for about 3 weeks, got really tired of cabbage soup, gained the weight back and then some.

        Re: worst diet advice?

Let's see if I can remember this.....

Eat the cabbage soup every day plus the following:

Day 1 - any fruit except bananas
Day 2 - any veggies - including 1 baked potato with butter
Day 3 - any fruits and veggies
Day 4 - 6 bananas and 6 glasses skim milk
Day 5 - tomatoes and any meat or fish
Day 6 - any meat and veggies
Day 7 - brown rice, fruit juice and veggies

"Guaranteed" to lose up to 17 pounds the first week. Uh huh. LOL

Yes, I actually was going to try this once but never made it past the 3rd day.

Man if I were on that cabbage plan, not only would I be farting constantly, but I'd totally be cheating--For example, on day 7 I could see myself drinking a shot of soup, and then chowing down on about 4 cups of brown rice a gallon of apple juice.

Uh, sorry if that was a bit graphic. I'm a healthy girl.

That's what really makes it so hilarious. Except for the day that the bananas and milk are specified, the rest of it is supposed to be unlimited amounts.

My moms best friend once was on a 700 calorie a day diet where she went into a clinic once a week for some kind of whale placenta (no not making this up) injection.

We have a quack diet Dr. in Toronto named Dr. Bernstein (not the famouse diabetes one). He charges huge $$ for his 'medically supervised diet'. it's EXTREMELY low fat and low carlie low carb and includes weekly vitamin injections. , I knew 2 coworkers taht both went on it..they were a mess. They lost weight, but they're skin turned a weird grey colour, they didn't look healthy. They basicall lived on salads with 1 tbns ff dressing and skinless chicken. . Of course both gained their weight back thouh their wallets were substatially lighter.

                        Re: worst diet advice?

                        WOW!

I remember my parents doing the mayo clinic diet, and some other wierd 2 or 3 day diet where they ate a lot of beets and baked apples. They also did weight watchers, which worked while they were on it, but of course, they eventually stopped and gained the weight back, then some.

I read an article in Women's Health at the gym the other day. It was about 10 Dieting Myths exposed.

Myth #1 was that "Atkins keeps weight off and is healthy."

Then they went on to say it was not at all true because the only way to lose weight is to cut calories, blah blah blah, and the only reason people lost weight on Atkins is because they cut out whole food groups, AND they "hated" what their food options were and just decided not to eat. And a doctor was quoted as saying how unhealthy it was because on Atkins you can't get the nutrients the body needs because all you're eating is "fat and protein."

I actually laughed out loud when I read that stuff (and the dude on the elliptical next to me shot his head up in a panic, thinking I was laughing at him). Look at all the people here who are healthy, fit, and happy! And how could I have lost 40lb. on a plan that doesn't work?

I just wanted to throw the magazine across the room, but if I would have, I think I would have been banned from the gym.

He IS the diabetes doctor..... I personally think his Diabetes plan is well done but living on a starvation diet is basically what he uses to take advantage of people who are desperate to lose weight and to make his pockets grow. How can he sleep at night knowing that? HE's saved Diabetics but this clinic thing is just commercialism and greedy...

"Don't do Atkins; its a heart attack on a plate. It will kill you for sure."

No he is a different Dr Bernstein. The one that wrote the diabetes book is Dr. Richard K Bernstein and is an American, the diet Dr is Stanley K Bernstein and is Canadian, and has not written any books about diabetes, only weight loss (interesting they both have the same middle inial and last name however).
