  • Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

UGH! I was in the break room, heating up my chicken breast & broccoli, and there was this man waiting to use the microwave. Well, one of my other co-workers walked by and said outloud to me, "Lookin good Sher, that diet is workin' good for you."

Well, the man, who was overweight himself, asks me what diet am I on, and I tell him Atkins. Then..........................................

He decided that I really wanted to hear his opinions and was basically told off by this man and was told that I wouldn't lose weight by doing that diet, that eliminating good carbs isn't healthy, eating all that meat and eggs will raise my cholesterol, and that EVERYONE on Atkins will gain there weight back!!! I then backfired and exclaimed that I've lost 36 lbs., I've lost over 6 inches, I've lowered my triglyceride level, and am the happiest I've been in a long time... I probably could have kept going, but I just got my chicken and walked out.

Why do people feel they need to TELL you what YOU are doing right and wrong????

    Thanks for letting me vent!!!!!

Let me get this visual straight...

You're heating up chicken and broccoli and your co-worker says you shouldn't eliminate 'good carbs' and you shouldn't be eating 'all that meat and eggs'?

Sher...most people are little parrots that regurgitate what they hear on the news...the truth is, if most Americans knew WHAT we should be eating...70% of us wouldn't be overweight and 35% of us wouldn't be obese...

I didn't hear him chiming in about the trans fatty acids that are in EVERYTHING on the grocers shelves...in the form of partially hydrogenated oils (sans whole, unprocessed foods), which are TERRIBLE for you...and most likely slowly poisoning everyone ingesting them.

You're doing great...keep it up...you did the right thing.

Right, he says I shouldn't be eliminating my good carbs like wheat, rice and such. Does he not know there are good carbs in broccoli? He said that meat and eggs (obviously knowing a little bit about Atkins) will raise my cholesterol. This man was a joke.

          Oh dear....

Alot of people don't know that vegetables are a source of carbohydrates. As for wheat, rice, etc.---they can be added back to our diets during the On-Going Weight Loss phase and Pre-Maintenance Phase. For example, my lunch was hummus topped with a super-fruity olive oil, a few veggie sticks and a couple of rye crackers <----lots of 'good' carbs and no sign of 'all that meat and eggs'. Yet my lunch was completely Atkins friendly for OWL/Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance.

I havn't had this happen to me beause I'm a coward. When most people ask what diet I'm on I just tell them it's a no sugar diet. I don't really want the hassle. I suppose what I should be doing is telling people the truth and then backing up the Atkins point of view if they have any problems with it. That way perhaps more people who want to lose weight would look at my example and see it as another option.

Grant I am a coward too. I tell people that I eat low carb and no sugar. The first time I was on this WOE I told everyone and had to stand up for myself all the time, and frankly, it got exhausting. If someone wants to know more about what I am eating now I will offer more information. But if they roll their eyes, as some have done, I just drop the subject. I do tell them though that I feel healthier than ever and that I am losing weight.

good lord! good for you that you kept your cool and was able to walk away.

you know, just last week i had to explain to someone that the atkins diet requires you to eat vegetables. and lots of them! i find that most people just have a vague idea about the atkins method, and not a good/true understanding of the principles. what's the saying, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". so true in this case...

I had someone come into our shop today who hasnt been in for 4 years or so and aksed what the people who used to run our shop are doing now. I answered that I am still here but have lost weight.
Even though he was amazed and very complimentary about me being 'half the woman I once was' he still felt he had to tell me that Atkins raises cholestoral!!
Ah well - he did shut up when I told him my levels are lower than 'average'!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

Alot of people that I know (mostly mom's club members and ladies from the gym) do have preconceived ideas regarding Atkins as a "diet" and don't support it, but those same people understand the concept of limiting carbs and watching sugars (because they do just that - actually many celebrities admit to watching their bread and sugar intake to stay thin) - lean proteins, veggies, nuts, fruits ... these are all things that most "diets" promote to be healthy - we though, who understand Atkins as a way of eating, get to enjoy all of the other stuff too - of course in moderation - like sausage or bacon every once in awhile - and cheese - and real eggs - and REAL cream in our coffee - and steak or lobster with butter - YUMMY!! Just keep doing what you're doing Sher - and when that same man runs into you in the lunchroom a year from now - he'll probally have a more constructve outlook -- or at least an envious one!!

I'm glad he's really not a co-worker, per say, I work for a big corporation, I won't say any names, but it rhymes with REWLETT RACKARD, anyways, we are in a big office, with one big kitchenette area that we share for lunches and stuff.

I have a co-worker who is the same way. She has a very "I know best" personality and after I started losing weight she wanted to know what I was doing. I said I was doing a low carb diet and the whole rant about how bad it is and what I needed to do started.
I just cut her off with "It works for me, I feel awesome, that's what counts"
