That was definitely the case with my MIL. She called one night after taking FIL to the doctor. She had asked the doctor if they might try Atkins to lose a few pounds (neither is more than 20 pounds overweight) The doctor told them that it would be dangerous, so she felt obliged to call and warn us. Of course, the reasons that it might have been "dangerous" for them had to do with health issues that they each have AND was based on the doctor's clearly limited understanding of the WOE. After listening to her carry on, I read to her from our food journals a typical day...she was, of course, floored at the "healthy" way we eating. I didn't hear any more about it after that.

Don't you just love how ignorant some people can be. People just assume that Atkins is eating JUST EGGS, MEAT AND CHEESE, normal media stereotype. Like with any topic, how can you comment unless you know the whole story, all the facts? I love it when people assume one thing, then when they REALIZE that Atkins isn't JUST EGGS, MEAT AND CHEESE and that we do eat healthy, they feel stupid and are apologetic.

If I ate just meat, cheese, and eggs I would stick with the plan for a day max! I just cannot believe that anyone would make a comment about Atkins after seeing you enjoy a very healthy lunch of chicken plus brocolli. Plus all of the pounds that you have lost!

Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

I think part of the negativity with this plan is the super-hype and popularity it got back in 2003/2004. It was a "fad" and it seemed like everybody was trying it...or at least, some messed-up, backwards version of it, where most people made their own rules and then promptly broke them. People heard about it, and without being educated, just jumped in to eating bacon and cheese everyday, all day.

There's a lady at my school who "did Atkins" a couple years ago, and now, seeing the success that I've had on it, supposedly started induction last week. This is what she ate for the first 4 days: slim jims, peanuts, cheese, wheat thins, berries. NO VEGGIES. ILLEGAL FOODS. She claimed she hadn't eaten any veggies because she didn't like lettuce, to which I nerdily replied, "well there are 54 veggies on the induction food list, I'm sure you can find something you like." Then she proceeded to talk about how much coffee and pop she's been drinking, no water at all, no exercise...AHHHH. I just bit my lip before I bit her head off, just so pissed about her thinking she's "doing Atkins!!!"

*giggles* @ Julie. It frustrates me when people say...I'm on a diet and bring in low fat bars, cakes + crisps. I just want to scream at them.....THEY ARE NOT HEALTHY!! THEY ARE PRODUCED CR*P!! I dont understand the whole low fat diet thing, replacing normal junk food with supposed healthy junk food.

After I changed jobs I received a phone call from her a year later and she had tried Atkins, loved it, and lost 60 pounds. She called to say she was sorry.
That's the other way it can go, I think it is really very thoughtfull of her to apologize to you!
That must have given you such a good feeling!!!

Most people do indeed react like morons though.
It doesn't help that the things they do hear about the diet are even now still totally wrong.
The other day I saw this doc on tv that talked about atkins (among other plans) and they talked only about the meat and eggs and such, at some point they showed someone eating atkins and there was this enormous amount of broccoli on the plate (next to a yummie looking steak) and what do you think, it was TOTALLY ignored, I about jumped into the tv!!

There are a lot of people out there that don't know what they are talking about when they tell you about how bad Atkins is. There are also a lot of people out there that *think* they are doing Atkins but aren't really, and who may be damaging their body in the process. What we need is a way to get these two groups together as the second group probably really DOES need someone to tell them those things. Maybe then they'd start doing real research and figure out how to do it right and be healthy about it.

Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

I just want to say - that guy is stupid.

I don't tell people I "do Atkins" some people know, some don't, if they ask, I eat "low-carb". I have gotten into arguments with people about how they think having gastric bypass is better for you than Atkins... or that they *had* to have it done because it's an addiction, and nothing like Atkins could help that. I have had comments of people asking what I eat for lunch, if I eat salads, and then saying, oh, you can't eat salads 'cause those have carbs, don't they? They're quickly corrected. It sounds like that guy's lunch could have been a maintenance meal (except that battered, deep fried whatever, but I'm not really sure why someone would *want* that, when there's SOOO much better stuff to eat!). Oh, and as a side note, I worked for a pharmaceutical company when I started Atkins in 1999, it was approved by more than 3 MDs working there. In 2002, I worked for a different company, we had a meeting with Drs. from around the world participating, I think the final number was that 4 out of 15 were doing Atkins. Drs. I work with now know how I eat, they congratulate me on losing the weight, not berate me for what I'm eating to lose it.

Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

I was hesitant to tell people about our wol but now I lay it on. When I'm asked how I lost weight and what have I done to look so healthy, I say I follow Atkins. I'm not on a diet, I follow the guidelines in the book. I just take off with how after induction you tailor your food to what works and how the responsibility is on yourself and how great I feel and then I suggest they buy the book and walk away smiling, without ever giving them a chance to respond.
