Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

I love what Elizellen said, it really sums up how people have to justify their comments even when the blatent truth is staring them in the face! Life has been so ironic for me. Having spent my first 25 years being told I am a 'fat' and 'obviously an unhealthy and ugly' person and then losing weight by this wol and for the last 17 years being told that I am killing myself by achieving ideal weight, ideal bp, hdl, ldl, exercising regularly etc.etc. that Atkins will kill me, I have learned that it is better never ever to have to justify myself to anyone!

I feel for you Sher, you're doing great! What a jerk, I want to know what he was having for lunch too hehe!

Don't you just love how everyone has a huge opinion about Atkins and yet if you had said WW or Jenny Craig or another "diet" it wouldn't have the same effect! They would always say good for you or something and yet as soon as you say Atkins, whammo, they're onto you instantly.

I get that from my own relatives (not the ones I live with, they're wonderful) They keep telling me I will be so much happier and healthier when I'm done with fat and bad eating and Atkins and can eat healthy food again. Huh? I have to keep my mouth zipped.

Makes me go harder. Their ignorance spurs me on to goal. Thank goodness for sugar addicts lol

Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

I love it when people are "experts" about things they really know nothing about. It makes me want to slap them silly, like this:

Kylie, I think you've hit the nail on the head with that quote. People are jerks, and if they're jealous or mad about someone else's success (usually in something THEY are trying to attain) they resort to put-downs and insults because it's easier than saying "job well done."

Only a couple people at work know I'm on Atkins. The rest, I don't think would be able to handle such "shocking" information. Today, I had cafeteria duty, so I'm standing there, watching all the students eat, and across the cafeteria, I could actually SEE my co-workers talking about me. Leaning over to someone, saying something, while keeping their eyes on me, or nodding in my direction. I'm sure they think I'm starving myself (I stopped eating in the cafeteria because of crappy food choices and annoying comments about what I was/wasn't eating, and now I just eat in my room) or that I'm doing something just as unhealthy. I wanted to scream at them "I EAT! I EAT A LOT! I EAT GOOD FOODS!" but then I figured, oh wtf, let them whisper. Let them stare. Who gives a ****. They can talk all they want. After all, I'm the one who's lost 55lb. (and still losing!) not them.

I was in Frazolis once to eat dinner. They had their new low carb menu then, may not have it now though. Some college kids walked in and started to comment on the poster announcing the lowcarb dish. She started with the usual "Atkin's has ruined everyone. Curse you Atkins." were pretty much his words.

Well, I'd had it, so I turned around and started talking to this guy and let him know that it was how I was keeping my, then, hypoglycemia under control. Of course he did the "well all that meat and no carbs" rubbish, to which I replied "We get our carbs from veggies and low glycemic fruits." He finally shut up. lol. I can't stand people like that and have no problem filling them in on what info they're missing.

That's when I really set off their alarms..I'm the kind that will walk up to the coworker who's obviously talking about me..I'll meet them eye to eye and go up as friendly as can be. Breaks the ice, then I can bend their ear about what what fu--ed up info they have.

Right, he says I shouldn't be eliminating my good carbs like wheat, rice and such.

I had a co-worker who use to hound me everyday about Atkins and how I was going to have a heart-attack...blah, blah. I just tuned her out. I let my results speak for themselves. After I changed jobs I received a phone call from her a year later and she had tried Atkins, loved it, and lost 60 pounds. She called to say she was sorry.

I have had a simliar situation happen at my job too. Kinda sucks that atkins got such a bad rap. I don't even tell anyone it's atkins....I just say I don't eat sugar and I watch my carbs...then I don't have to defend myself everytime someone asks. It's kind of a shame that is comes down to that, seriously when did everyone become so concerned about what you eat, and when did they become so knowlegable?? LOL I mean really whenever you tell someone about a new way of eating they seem to automatically know what is good for you and what isn't. Ok I am done venting....thanks for listening hehe

I've also done the "I have a wheat allergy" bit, which I do (undiagnosed offically, but found it caused my eczema) Or I've told them "I'm diabetic" (pre-diabetic now, which is also true) either one stops any arguments in its tracks.

Kinda wierd how that works. They spend years telling you one thing, then when you do something about it, they say something else. Reminds me of the lyrics of the song "It's my life" I believe it was used as the intro music to the 1980's tv show " bosom buddies" the lyric I was thinking about was "First they tell you can't sleep alone in a strange place. Then they tell you can't sleep with nobody else."

I eat less meat and eggs then my dh(who isn't on Atkins). Give me some more veggies, please!

I usually do not mention the "A" word. Though we had to visit Francescas godfather and Natasjas godmother after New Years. I passed up the cake and claimed my stomach was bothering me. My mother-in-law says that the godmother thinks I must be pregnant if my stomach wasn't feeling well enough to eat cake. LOL

Re: Attack of the Non-Atkineer know-it-all!!!!!!

The man had for lunch what looked like: Some sort of veggie salad, brown rice and some sort of breaded/battered meat/chicken. Boy, I bet that was so much healthier than what I had.

As for people knowing I'm on Atkins at work, only 3 people know, and those are the ones I sit directly with and work directly with.

This reminds me of another instance, right before Christmas, one of the women I work with, (in my department but sits an aisle away) kept coming over daily offering goodies and sweets. One specific day she was trying to offer some homemade chocolate covered popcorn to us. As I normally do, I politely said no thanks. She then said again to have some, waving it in front of me, "It's really good, really delicious." I again said no thanks, but I added that I was eating low-carb (never said the word Atkins) and turned my head back to my computer screen. She then said to me, "Oh yeah I forgot, you are dieting, because you're ALWAYS telling everyone that you are." I then said in a stern voice, "Well if you would accept my no thanks as a refusal the first time, I wouldn't have to ALWAYS keep telling you over and over that I don't eat stuff like that."

Except for my 3 close workers, which actually 1 of them is trying Atkins, I try to keep my comments to myself, but it's hard when you have to defend yourself as well. I didn't realize that so many people are against you when your trying to better yourself.

My theory is that misery loves company. Another might be unhappy because he/she too would like to lose weight and isn't doing anything about it OR because he/she is on a program (low-calorie/low-fat) that leaves him/her feeling hungry and deprived. In the first instance, seeing someone else doing something reminds them that they should as well and in the second, seeing someone eat rich Atkins friendly foods seems "unfair" - I feel sure that is where 90% of the negativity comes from. It is less a commentary on "your" diet than on how that person is feeling about him/herself.

May also be a case of "A little info is more dangerous than a lot" syndrome.
People that have heard the hype feel they need to be the saviors of the diet relm.
