  • Stalling Buddies

I am starting this thread in hopes that others who feel that are stalling (whether "true stall" or not) will visit and post. Maybe we can help each other figure out what is causing us to stall as well as to offer support/encouragement.

So here goes.... Like a few others posting recently - I am in a stall (or what I would consider a stall)... I haven't lost weight or inches in about 4 weeks. I have been eating on plan, exercising like crazy and drinking plenty of water.

The first time I was on Atkins I didn't exercise, had quite a few CHEAT days and still lost... and lost on fairly consistent basis.

This has caused me (probably hits a nerve for a few others out there as well) to get somewhat depressed about my success (or lack of) and on Saturday I went off plan as far as eating -- which made me madder than **** that I did it and didn't even have a really valid reason for doing it in the first place . The only thing I proved to myself is that my action(s) are those of someone who is willing to accept defeat & and by God I ain't ready to lay down and accept this as my lot.

I think part of the reason I am in a "stall" is:

    a) I am few years older than I was the first time around and metobolism is slower than ever.
    b) Second time around is not always easy for everyone and many have posted in the past that their loss rate was slower than the first time around.
    c) I am exercising on very frequent basis so maybe I am gaining the muscle which would effect the weight - but not sure of measurements.

I know that I have to give this time... the plan will work ~ I just need to try and push through this nonsense. If nothing else - I feel better and am getting healthier just from the excerising alone.... The pounds, inches will come off -- I just need to quit focusing on them.

So during the rest of my 6 week exercise challenge I have decided not to weigh myself or measure my inches.... They are not going to go away overnight and I just need to focus on what I am doing right, rather than focusing on what I can't control. In order for me to succeed I need to keep a positive attitude and encourage myself to push a little harder especially when I start getting that self sabatoging, feel sorry for myself frame of mind.

I hope others will respond to the thread and give voice to the reasons why they think they are stalling and like I said originally maybe we can come up with solutions to our problems and if nothing else lend an ear/shoulder and offer support and a few virtual hugs along the way.

    Re: Stalling Buddies

I've been stuck at the same weight for the past 3 months. I'm sticking with low carbing. I am pretty sure I'm just taking in too many calories, but right now I don't care. I've lost 70 lbs and I've kept it off. So long as the scale doesn't start moving up, I'm ok with it.

I know once Spring rolls around I will be more active. Spring and Summer have always been the easiest time for me to lose weight.

I always wonder if the fact that it's easier to lose weight in spring and summer is natrual... because in winter it's colder, so we need extra protective "padding". Maybe nature makes it harder to lose weight in the winter months for this reason. No science behind this theory... just a funny lil thought of mine.

Back to stalls (or pauses)... remember to take your measurements, everyone. The tape measure tells the true story ...and, whatever you do, hang in there!

        Re: Stalling Buddies

I'm not sure what my problem is. I went back to a very strict induction and lost nothing. I thought it was yeast at first so I bought some yeast fighters and now my spit test is fine. I thought it was the protein, I cut that down and no loss. I cut out cream cheese, I cut out all artificial sweetners. I upped my water. I've been living off of my three cups of veggies daily(cucumber and romaine lettuce). I also upped my fat intake(extra mayo, oil, and butter). I lowered my salt intake and now my salads are quite bland. The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is cutting out my 1/2 cup shredded cheese or completely eliminating my chicken. The only 'meat' I consume daily are 4 chicken tenders and 3 medium eggs. I've crunched numbers again and again, even tried counting stuff like calories too and nothing! Moving up to the veggie rung didn't help either. I've re-read/poured over the induction phase and more of DANDR to see if I missed anything and I just don't understand why this is happening. I'm also working out an hour and a half six days a week. I haven't lost any inches, but I have toned up and built some muscles. I had gotten down to 108lbs in January last year and by Christmas I was 112lbs from going off plan and then getting back on. Since Christmas, I haven't been able to lose anything. Every time I cheat, I gain weight and it doesn't come off. I'm now up to 121lbs and the thought of changing my ticker just depresses me so I haven't messed with it. I'm moving on to more drastic measures and doing a four day fat fast. If that doesn't work, I have no idea what I'll do. Great thread FatBottomGirl! I hope we can all start losing again!

Thanks for responding (glad you like the thread Beanpole) - I am hoping it will help and encourage others to continue with Atkins even when it MIGHT seem that it is not working the way we want it to. I think I am going to try as BeanPole did and go back into induction - maybe like Elffriend I am taking in too many calories (as I don't pay attention to my calorie intake). I loved the word that Sallyseachange used - PAUSE - maybe instead of thinking of it as a stall we should consider it a temporary pause.

My hats off to you - Elffriend for not giving up on this way of life even though you have been in a "Pause" for three months - You can inspire others to stick with it.

BeanPole - maybe you are not getting enough protien?? Like you the weight is just staying... so we probably are in the same boat as second timers (the first time was our golden window of opportunity). This is not to say it won't work -- I am 17 pounds lighter and therefore healthier than when I first started at the beginning of the year & I will take that. I just wished that I was..... (don't know how to put it into words exactly but... we all just wish for some type of measurable success whether by tape measure or scale to know we are on track. I do think that one day I will wake up (hopefully in the near future ) and I will have dropped inch or so or few pounds as way to continue to boost my morale and confidence... All I know is that like Elffriend - I am not planning to throw the towel in yet!!!

Also glad to know that you are having same issue with measurements (okay that didn't come out quite right - I want you to loose the inches... just glad I am not alone) - So MAYBE it is the fact we are exercising and building muscle and toning that we are not seeing a difference quite yet - are bodies are adjusting to our new regime and hasn't had time to re-adjust. Maybe we just have to give it a little more time. How long have you been working out? I just started the exercising back in February so for me it hasn't been that long. While, as I said I haven't seen any measured success - hubby has mentioned that I am looking a bit firmer and tonier ((however he might be saying that just to score brownie points in hopes of getting "lucky" later )).

Hopefully this thread will continue for a while and others will join us. I hope all of you have a great and successful ADBB day and may the wooshie fairy come visit you both very soon !!!!

            Re: Stalling Buddies

I was recently in a three week stall (no change in weight at all) and the minute I increased my protein (to 25% from about 18 - 20%) I started dropping weight like crazy. I lost almost 10 pounds in two weeks. I also moved up in OWL at the same time and that probably helped too. It's worth trying a few different things to see what happens. Good luck everyone!

If the fat fast doesn't do me any good, I'll up my protein. I've tried everything else, might as well give this a try too! I've been working out for six days a week the past 11 weeks from an hour and a half to two hours. I can tell that I'm toning up, but the measurements aren't changing and well, you know the story with the scales. I've decided to stick with the fat fast till sunday since its 'rest' week for me. I still have to workout, the workouts are just easier. I had to laugh at the brownie points comment! Now I need to run off and get back to work. Just had a minute and wanted to check in!

                  Re: Stalling Buddies

Hi guys! I thought I'd check this thread out, as I just recently reversed a stall/gaining period of 7 MONTHS. My problem was yeast...well my problem STILL IS yeast, it's going to take a while, but at least I've started losing again and I'm back to my ticker weight.

BeanPole--are you sure you're eating ENOUGH FOOD??? If you're working out 6x/week very intensely, your caloric needs have gone up. In the last month or so (during my yeast-cleanse), I've lost 3.5 pounds and I've been eating AT LEAST 2200 calories a day, probably closer to 3000 on some days! Obviously, everyone's built differently, and I weigh a heckuva lot more than you do, but my point is that my body needs a lot more energy than I think it does, and when I don't give it enough, it holds on to every stinking calorie I give it. I had a "pause" about a year ago, because I'd dropped my calories to the 1700-1900 range. Once I started eating 2000+/day, I started losing weight again.

And regarding measurements--another good way to see if you're losing inches is to keep an item of clothing that's too small, like a pair of jeans, and try them on periodically to see if they fit better. I've had months where I haven't lost inches in the places I measure, yet all of those wierd little in-between places show a loss because the once-too-small item of clothing will suddenly fit!

Oh, BP, I also do not recommend the fat fast. For one, you're not metabolically resistant, and doing the fat fast could actually put you in danger. Secondly, there are those who have done the fat fast to jumpstart things again, and yes they lost weight, but gained it right back when they resumed normal Atkins eating.

I agree wholeheartedly. Beware the fat fast... most people end up gaining more, in the long run. It's only for the severely metabolically resistent to weight loss, which you don't seem to be.

Ugh! No worries there! I was so unsatisfied yesterday evening that I broke over and ate corn muffins along with low-carb meatballs that I had made DBF and the kids. Now I'm up to 125lbs this morning and more depressed than ever! I'm going back to my usual menu today. Atleast I probably wont gain anymore this way. I used to eat a lot more meat and calories, but I started gaining weight. Then I cut my protein down and upped my veggies. I thought it would be a sure-fire way of losing again because all the 'successful' people seem to eat that way. All it does for me is make the scales bounce up and down on a couple pounds. I usually eat about 1,800 cals daily, which is a lot more than I ate while doing low-fat and working out. Of course my jeans are even tighter now, but they weren't getting loose before. I'll cut out a cup of veggies and up my protein and calories again and see if that helps. Thanks for the advice! Oh, and I don't know if this helps any, but when I had yeast, I took Yeast Fighters from Twin Labs and it cleared my yeast problem up. It also had something in it that made me 'go' often. I lost maybe two pounds while getting rid of my yeast, but I think it was more from being plugged up for awhile at the time.

I could have a problem with yeast - I just hate the thought of having to give up the cheese and mushrooms - will really limit what I like to snack on. I tried the Stir Fry recipe someone else posted on a thread about Whoosies - so hopefully the wooshie fairy will visit me soon. I have gone back to eating more induction friendly foods in hopes that will help. Also trying to up my excersise programs so I really, really hope that after my 6 week challenge I see some progress. If not, I guess the cheese & mushrooms will have to go bye bye for a while.

                              Hi Bozwellruby:

While I am on a learning curve here myself - trying to do this by the book this time. It doesn't seem that you are getting enough veggies (salads, etc.) You should eat 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup of another acceptable veggie per day. Since you have finished induction have you moved onto OWL - it will allow you five more veggie carbs. Also I would really stay away from the gravy as most is made with flour and hidden sugars. 11 pounds in a month is nothing to sneeze at. Also ~ your weight loss or "Pause" can be from many contributing factors - how much weight you actually have to lose, metabolic restistance, ect. Also are you exercising? If not, I highly encourage it - that will also boost your losing ability. Finally as mentioned numerous times on this site - if you are still continuing to lose inches don't sweat the actual poundage loss. I like beanpole seem to be in a slump regarding both

Good luck and post back here again, letting us know how you are doing.
