It's so sad how stupid people can be. Even when they think they are commenting you.

Re: What is the worst thing you ever heard someone say about your weight?

Well, pretty much all through high school I was made fun of. One of the girls I went to school with actually wrote the number for Jenny Craig on my backpack in permanent marker.
There was this kid that had a crush on me and I knew it. I played hard to get for a while. He asked me out, when he did someone overheard and screamed down the hall "eww keith, you have a crush on her?!!!" Needless to sy, we didn't go out. These are just a few examples.

I haven't been made fun of in a long time. But recently it has escalated. While hubs and I were in Disney vacationing, there were some cast members working the noodle station in the magic kingdom. Hubs and I decided to get some grub. While we waited for our order, the young intern chefs in the back pointed and laughed at me. They then called over one of the other guys to point and laugh some more, I was so depressed that I couldn't eat.

Hubs and I had gone to the movies and afterward we were walking through the mall. We had just come out of Bath and Body works when a small group of teenagers walked past us. One of the boys said "moooo" and then the girl said "oh my god, eww, did you see that?" That hurt so bad, I cried and cried.

It's staggering how cruel people can be, isn't it? Here's a confession: I didn't have a weight problem until middle age, when I packed on nearly 50 lbs. In my slender days, even though I would never call obese people names to their face, I would be very judgmental in my thinking, including about my own mother. But hey ... what goes around, comes around ... here I am, looking uncannily like my Mom! I'm so sorry about the abuse that y'all have suffered. We all need to walk a mile in the other guy (or gal's) shoes. Shame on me and a belated mea culpa to anyone I might have hurt along the way.

I think human beings as a species will always be judgemental about things. I know that I have thought some things about different people. There is a difference in thinking something and saying something to someone's face. While thinking it will make you feel guilty and bad, people who say and do things to people because they are different usually don't feel bad. Therein lies the problem. Don't beat yourself up too much.

Re: What is the worst thing you ever heard someone say about your weight?

I have suffered many of the same humiliations as everyone else and I noticed that the hardest person on me ever was myself. I was always the first one to put myself down and make the jokes to beat everyone to the punch so it didn't hurt so bad.

The ongoing worst is my hubby's family and how they treat me. My hubby is great. *In fact I think he's into chubby women. *giggles* He's always wanting to fatten me up. ha!*

Anyway, we don't see his family often, but when we do it is a nightmare for me. I have near anxiety attacks before we go. I try really hard to make sure everything is perfect.. my hair, thinning clothes, my nails, jewelry etc.. everything and anything to make me look my very best. I even bring gifts to soften 'em up with lots of hugs and smiles, but it never fails.

The whole weekend ends up being about how much weight I've gain. How I need to have my mouth sewn shut so I'll stop eating. *all done jokingly of course*
I practically starve myself the weekends we visit because I won't dare eat in front of any of them and if I were to try they would make comments like "Are you going to eat that?" "You better not, you need to lose weight".

Although my husband is a good man, he tends to be completely oblivious to these comments or off visiting with specific family members. He did stick up for me once when it got pretty bad and it helped me get through that weekend but it's always still the same story each visit. What's really sad is that my weight gain is caused by a terminal illness that I'm still struggling with.

                Ugh.

Is it wrong for me now to look differently at overweight people and want to tell them about Atkins, to help them? I want to because I want them to feel the way I do .. better about life. If I do, I'm afraid of hurting their feelings or embarrassing them.. like the one time some guy handed me a card for weight loss and told me I needed it. I wish I had had a card for hair club for men. I would have handed it to him. Ha!

Re: What is the worst thing you ever heard someone say about your weight?

                    Holding...you reminded me of something.
When I met my husband almost 7 years ago, I was just as big as I am today. When we started going out, he brought me to his parents house to meet them. The first time I met my mother-in-law she told me, wow, you could stand to loose 75 lbs. She then asked my husband(because he is considered a "chubby chaser") Why he only dated big women. I don't know how he responded because at that point I had just walked out and completely given up on them even remotely liking me.
She is obsessed with being thin. We were looking through old photo's last year and she saw one of her when she was young. She was undoubtedly anorexic or something, she said oh my god, look how thin I was.
Well, anyway...it has gotten better, but she will makes comments now and then, she even offered to pay for weight watchers. She's my MIL now, so she has no choice but to like me.
I didn't think I was so hard to like. Maybe if I loose a lot of weight, then she'll treat me like na DIL...who knows.

Re: What is the worst thing you ever heard someone say about your weight?

One of the most hurtful comments I've ever received was when I was a chubby little girl in middle school, and barely 30 lbs. overweight. I had a few friends that were in the "popular crowd" and we were outside goofing off when one of the "popular crowd" boys took my friend's hat and all the skinny, cute little girls started chasing the boy. The girls chased him and they were all laughing and having a good old time. When he ran by me I decided I'd chase him to try to get my friend's hat back and he screamed out in front of everyone "Help! Get this fat thing off me!". That was almost 10 years ago, but the pain and embarrassment echoes like it was moments ago. Kids can be so cruel.

For a more recent stab to the heart:
After middle school I lost weight and really grew into my body. I wasn't ever skinny, but I looked great throughout highschool. Since I graduated high school, I've gained 60 lbs. I was at a big party a few months ago and all my old high school buddies were there, along with random groups of people I knew from high school, but weren't friends with. I walked by a group of guys and heard one of them say "Damn, Danielle really got fat. She used to be so hot." :0(
"I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down!" :)

Re: What is the worst thing you ever heard someone say about your weight?

My earliest recollection was when I was 9 or 10 and a "friend" nicknamed me porky. My first diet was born, and it was starvation. I got so thin that my mom and dad threated to admit me to the hospital. I didn't want that.
I've always struggled with my weight. Through diet pills and slim fast and just plain not eating I kept it somewhat under control (although, was never really skinny) until I got married. Then the happy pounds came, then the pregnancy pounds came. My highest weight was 217 on a 4'11 frame. So all along I thought I was fat.. well now I KNEW what fat really was at that weight and all my old tricks weren't working. Atkins is the only thing that has worked and STUCK with me.

Re: What is the worst thing you ever heard someone say about your weight?

I went into a Victoria Secrets about 8 years ago during the holidays. The store was bustling with people. I was there to buy my mom a pretty robe. Now i have to explain, my mom is 4'11" and probably weighs about 103 or so.

When a 5'11" idiot who probably weighted that same as my mom, walked up to me sideways (you'd have to see that to believe it) she acted as though she was crreeping up on some wild elephant she'd spotted in a jungle somewhere) When the following dialog took place:

Idiot: "uhh, can i ....help you??"
Me: "Yes please, i'm looking for a robe....."(cut off very quickly)
Idiot: with this sick chuckle: "uuhhh, i'm sorry, but i dont think we have anything in here that would fit you, but ya know what? (her tone lightened and got that sicky icky sweet, that insincere people give you when they think you're stupid. "there is a Lane Bryant, just down the street, you might wanna try there." Then she turned and walked off.

I stood there in the middle of the store while all these people were running around getting their holiday shopping done. And i started to cry. It was like a dream, i could no longer hear the holiday music blasting through the ceiling speakers, and everyone seemed to move in low motion.

I never bought my mom that robe....

                            But wait there's more...

As though i were some glutton for punishment, several years later, V.S came out with a perfume that i really wanted. But this time, i steeled myself before walking in. I was approached by believe it or not, an Ignorant Young Man. The dialog went as follows:

IYM: "Hi there, can i help you find something?
Me: "Yes i'm looking for a perfume
IYM: "Ok well come this way"

After he showed me the perfume

IYM: "nothing else for yourself? We have this great sale on bras and underware."
Me: wanting to beat him to the punch i said "No thank you, i doubt anything in here would fit me."
IYM: "well of course it wouldnt' you're pretty thick"
(now for some reason, i had always associated the term thick, when referring to a person, meant that they were a little dumb, but thats not what this idiot meant)
IYM: "I was going to show you our catalog, for thick women"
Me: "Now if V.S. were really interested in selling to me, why dont they put any of that merchandise in the store??"

And here was the proverbial straw that broke this camel's back:

                            He laughted and said:

IYM: "Yeah, thats gonna happen, if we did that ma'am, there wouldn't be any room left in here for the real women's merchandise!!"

                            Then he laughed, out loud.

And then i had him fired....

Right then and there. The manager was very apologetic and said he was new, but that he was only supposed to be handing out sample of some new cologne. And she wasn't going to tolerate her employees being abusive.

The District manager even called me and tried to give me a 100.00 gift certificate, i declined.

But i didnt laugh. Cause even though i had somehow got my revenge, it didnt make me feel any better about myself. AND NOW, I AM READY TO MAKE A CHANGE

(secretly, i would really like to buy SOMETHING from V.S., thats not a cream or a perfume)

                              Tink dear..

I think it's really sad that your MIL can only measure her whole being by a tape measure and sees fit to try to do the same thing to you. Clearly you have far more worth than that. Maybe she will get that one day. Maybe she won't. Don't count on it. I understand those type of people. We have all apparently dealt with them. It all comes down to how we view ourselves and we can't let the lowest common denominator dictate our worth. The heck with 'em. They don't have to love us, if we love ourselves.

I looked at your pic and I can see why your husband married you. You're absolutely beautiful (inside and OUT).. regardless of how much you weigh or what your MIL thinks, but that's just my opinion and it's your opinion that counts.

It was a beautiful wedding...I planned for a very long time.

Holding...you are absolutly right. I was upset by her, now I say Scr**w her. I don't need her. I just really hope that when I slim down...because I WILL... that she doesn't all of a sudden love me. Because then I really know for sure why she doesn't care for me.

My family, friends and my adoring husband all love me the way I am. I am changing for me and no one else...well besides my future babies. My main motivation for getting up at 5:30 everyday to work out and eating the atkins way is so that I can have a baby and not worry about being unhealthy.

All of you are so sweet. Thank you so much. It's so wonderful to have this board for extra support.
