Re: what do you snack on???

Well, I honestly don't eat unless I am really hungry - which is why I do 3 big meals & not that mini-meal thing - but here are some snack ideas:
    • 16 oz. container of 4% cottage cheese: 12 total carbs (look for brands that bear 3 carbs per half-cup like Daisy & Target brand)
    • 17.6 oz. container FAGE Total: 14 total carbs
    • Meatballs with one handful melted cheddar cubes on top (Recipe on my Original LC Recipes page) - and 1 packet of Splenda with some added oregano make it even better!
    • Pumpkin seeds are wonderful: one 5-oz bag yields 16 total carbs; a 2.25-oz. bag, 6 total carbs. The former is perfect for watching a movie because it takes me more than 2 hours to put it away.
    • A cup of decaf coffee with plenty of heavy whipping cream, ground cinnamon, & 1-2 Splendas or Stevia.
    • 2-3 tablespoons of sunflower seed butter melted on a plate, which is 5-7½ total carbs with Sunbutter Organic.
    • Meat/cheese rollups with mayo sweetened with a packet of Splenda so that it tastes like Miracle Whip. I roast my own turkey breasts about every other week or so.
    • A 16-oz bag organic edamame pods yield 27 total carbs. These are so great for plane rides and road trips.
    • 1 can of real crabmeat mixed with a 3-oz cube of cream cheese, softened to taste in the microwave, then add 2 spoonfuls sour cream. Add pepper, garlic, & onion. I love this little throw-together because I've always been crazy about crabdip! You can eat it straight or use veggies like celery, cucumbers, squash, or anything as makeshift chips.
    Hope this helps!

Eating out of boredom or eating because you need something to do with your time is a very, very bad habit and might be the reason why you are overweight to begin with. Remember, just because we don't count calories on Atkins, doesn't mean that calories don't matter. Dr. Atkins wrote that his diet wasn't a license to gorge yourself.

So try to develop healthy eating habits, rather than perpetuate the bad habits that got you fat in the first place.

So if you feel like eating and you aren't hungry, drink a glass of water and take a walk around the block, or do an exercise video or do stretches or do jumping jacks. Re-train your brain.

I agree that we should not gorge ourselves but this posting sounded very judgemental to me. We ALL snack from time to time. No matter who you are.

I honestly do not believe that Meg meant any thing rude by what she wrote.

In fact, I am having to retrain my brain and her post is a kick in the butt that sometimes we need.

          Just my two cents

Lets not ruffle up any feathers here. She was just pointing out that we shouldn't eat because we feel like it.

I just don't think she understood that the main point of the board was just to share snack ideas...

What i love is sauteed garlic prawn and cheese cocktail sticks. Get some king prawns stir fry them in butter or oils with some crushed garlic, chilli and soy sauce. Wait till cool then put on cocktail stick witha cube of cheese. YUM!!

Re: what do you snack on???

I can assure everyone here, that I read the thread---particularly the melimeli's initial post very carefully before I answered.

The title of this thread is "what do you snack on???"

And the initial post gives the specific instance of when this snacking occurs:

Originally posted by melimeli View Post

It is very clear to whomever closely read this thread that she wants ideas of what to snack "when you aren't REALLY hungry but just want to eat"

So I answered it accordingly: You DO NOT eat on Atkins just because you "feel" like eating or because you need something to do. You only eat when you are hungry or if you have gone more than 6 waking hours without eating something.

That kind of eating is a bad habit. And if you don't break those bad eating habits, your weight loss and weight maintenance journey will be difficult.

That's being honest and giving sound advice, not "judgmental".

Re: what do you snack on???

I think it depends how you read (or re-read) the initial post. I read it as someone being hungry but not being really hungry (as in starving). I did not read it as someone being really hungry as in, they're not hungry at all but want something to put in their mouth.

I snack when I'm hungry, but not *really* hungry, as in, hungry enough to eat a meal. Which means I want to eat *something* just not a full meal. Hence it being a snack.

I think that when responding to posts, there are different ways that people intend things and that it's hard to tell which meaning someone may be giving.

As in "hungry enough to eat something, but not a meal" kind of snack? OK, then ... macadamia nuts (so rich and buttery, a few satisfy); sugar-free bread 'n butter pickles (my husband, the rat, polished off the last jar after I'd only had a couple!); the ever-popular hard-boiled egg with a schmear of mayo; and, of course, pork rinds ... with salsa 'n sour cream

Didn't mean to hurt your feelings by using the word "judgemental". But your answer sounded rather harsh to me.

I don't see anything wrong with a mid day snack. In fact in Dr. A's book he has included snacks for the daily menu. Pages 232- 235 in my book he includs a snack for every day of the week.

Re: what do you snack on???

Lyssie, I read it as she isn't truly hungry, but wants to eat something. So I gave my advice accordingly.

DLS, it might "sound" harsh, but it's factual and truthful. Sorry if the truth might sound "harsh", but we're all here because we are fat and need to lose weight. Perpetuating the bad eating and lifestyle habits that made us fat doesn't help anyone out. In fact, it only decreases our chances of successful weight loss and maintenance. I've seen too many folks lose their weight and re-appear in a year's time because they never stopped their bad eating habits. So if I sound harsh or judgmental, it's because I've seen too much failure around here and don't want to see anymore.

I don't have a problem with you being the Atkins Police but please don't have a problem when others aren't as regimented as you. As I stated in my last post Dr. A himself condones snacks.

Actually, Dr A encourages snacking but only when hungry or after six hours from your last meal. Maybe I missed something, but I don't remember ever reading anywhere, that he condones snacking just for the sake of it.
Megs, imho, was not being judgemental at all. She was just giving advice. Very good advice too.

Let's all try to focus on trying to break fattening habits rather than getting huffed up here.
