Re: I'm about to quit after 15 days Carb-Free...

I KNOW THAT FOR ONE, YOU SHOULD BE DRINKING A TON OF WATER ESPECIALLY IF YOUR WORKING OUT PLAYING HOCKEY. YOUR BODY WILL RETAIN WATER FOR SURVIVAL IF YOU DO NOT GIVE IT PLENTY OF WATER. ALSO, MOST PEOPLE DO NOT REALIZE THAT WHEN WE LOSE FAT FROM OUR CELLS OUR BODIES ARE GEARED TO KEEPING THINGS IN A CERTAIN BALANCE, AND WHEN WE ULTIMATELY START TO LOSE ACTUAL FAT FROM OUR CELLS, THOSE CELLS BECOME SOMEWHAT UNSTABLE, FLOPPY SO TO SPEAK. INSTEAD OF PERFECT, FULL AND ROUND SO AS A WAY OF KEEPING ALL THINGS IN BALANCE THE BODY WILL RETAIN WATER, SHOVE IT INTO THOSE CELLS TO ALLOW THEM TO SHRINK AND BECOME NICE AND CELL LIKE NOT FLOPPY. THIS IS WHEN YOU MUST NOT BE DISCOURAGED WHEN YOU GET ON THE SCALE AND HAVE EITHER GAINED, NOT LOST, OR EVEN FEEL BLOATED. YOUR BODY WILL RELEASE THE WATER IN A FEW DAYS ONCE THE CELLS ARE ABLE TO SHRINK DOWN AND REGAIN STABILITY FROM THE FAT LOSS FROM THEM. THIS PART MEANS YOUR ACTUALLY LOSING FAT... THE WATER IS A GOOD THING, IT HELPS FLUSH TOXINS AND FATS FROM THE BODY, AND THE BODY IS ABLE TO UTILIZE IT AS A FILLER FOR THOSE FLOPPY CELLS UNTIL THEY ARE ABLE TO REGAIN THEIR CORRECT HOMEOPATHIC SHAPE. IF YOU DO NOT ALLOW YOUR BODY ENOUGH WATER, IT CANNOT RELEASE THE FAT FROM THE CELLS AS IT WILL NOT DO ANYTHING THAT IS NOT IN IT'S BEST INTEREST. HOMEOSTASIS IS THE BODIES ONLY FUNCTION. IF YOU NEED GOOD IDEAS ON WHAT VEG'S TO BE EATING GOOGLE CARB CONTENT ONLINE ON WHAT VEG'S YOU LIKE TO EAT. ALSO THERE ARE AVAILABLE LISTS OF INDUCTION APPROVED VEG'S IN YOUR BOOK. I HAVE SEEN THIS WAY OF EATING WORK TOO MANY TIMES, TO GIVE UP. CLEANSE YOUR COLON, DRINK LOTS OF WATER. JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO FLOAT AWAY AND YOU CAN'T GO TO THE BATHROOM AGAIN, DRINK SOME MORE.

OK all - tonight for dinner I had grilled chicken breast with red peppers, green onions, almonds, tomatoes, cheese, avocado on a bed of greens, with a side of steamed broccoli and a caffiene free diet coke.

      Better?

Mitzi thank you for the carb count spreadsheet! That's what I've been looking for! 199 here I come...

oops - looks like the almonds I put on the salad tonight were a mistake per the spreadsheet but the package said 1g. Only had a few sprinkled on so should be OK.

OK now that I have this spreadsheet I think i can do this...

I dont wanna be harsh, but it didnt work cause you didnt follow the directions. You put in so much effort ( and did a great job) but you didnt eat your veggies like it tells you too ......maybe you should read the book again and follow the directions and see how things turn out ..

          Good luck ..

You are very welcome! I really do love that spreadsheet... it has come in very handy.

And yes, I KNOW that you can do this.

I didn't say or even suggest that the advice you gave, Mitzie, would or should apply differently to men. You gave sound advice to all.

              What I said was

"The way Atkins can work for large and relatively active males can be subtly different to the approach taken by a 5ft3in female"

I think large males more easily consume vast amounts of calories in steaks and other flesh. They can do that without the ketosis brakes being effective.

That, I think, is a particular problem for men in the early stages.

In the later stages of Atkins I found, and I think other tall men (I will now say tall rather than large) . . . other tall men find that they plateau until they adjust their pre-maintenance Atkins so its pretty close to the GI Diet - less fat, more low GI carbs, and moderate protein intake. This seems particularly true where a much more active lifestyle has been embraced.

Betty, a 5ft3in female marathon runner has lost and maintained weight at very low carb consumption rates. I could not. Tommy could not. Higgies? I don't know what Kent's view is.

But maybe this should be another thread, and if you want to use Mod privs to branch this thread, then please do.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
              he said, 'Don't count calories.'

No need! I was just wondering what you meant by that statement, since I am a 5ft 3in female that had just responded. Thanks for the clarification.

                  Hi Gillart
I will let the experts advise, just wanted to say that almonds are a definite no, no at the beginning and you have a lot of carbs there for one meal with all of those veggies. A medium tomato, for example, has five carbs alone.

I think Brian, that it actually depends on the person, and not by gender or height/weight. I too cannot maintain my weight (I'm 5'4") at a very low carb conusmption rate. I needed to lower the fat and up the low GI carbs as well just like you guys did. I think there are alot of other factors, like you mentioned the amount of exercise etc.

Sorry this is a bit off topic, but I thought interesting to note.

                      Thanks for the observation. Interesting.

Perhaps we should have a separate thread to chat about this?

                        Hey Gillart!
Dont lose hope, keep working toward the goal!
I lost very slow at first because I was thinking High Protein was my course of action....WRONG! And I read the book! I guess I am not good at retention of knowledge...just water LOL
This really is a High Fat diet. 65% of your calories need to come from fat. The first 13 weeks I lost 14 pounds only. Then I started putting my projected menu for the day into Fitday making sure I got my greens and adding fats into my diet when it was too low...Olive oil in my broccolli with a little Garlic....you get the idea. I have dropped 6 pounds in 2 weeks.
I wish I had taken everyones advice and done this months ago!

                              such a common mistake!!

people think "im supposed to stay under 20 carbs?, i'll try to eat ZERO carbs, then I'll REALLY lose!!"....NO.

you have to take in some carbs, and you must eat your veggies! That two go hand-in-hand.
