Re: Just had a lecture from my doctor

also - if you read the book "Living the Low Carb Life" by Johnny Bowden (which I'm reading now and getting good info from) - or you can get through the book "Good Calories Bad Calories" by Gary Taubs (which, for me, this one is just too scientific...)

they'll educate you on WHY low carb IS the way to eat for life!

Have you noticed how Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri-system, all of them are constantly changing....that's because they don't work! Atkins hasn't changed because it WORKS.

I'm looking forward to the day when doctors all agree that Atkins is he way to go -- but of course I'm also waiting for a lot of other impossible things to happen!! I say do what is good for you - don't let someone else interfere with what works for you. This is the only WOE I've found that has the degree of variety this one has, is easy to stay with and the ONLY one I WANT to stay on. It's what is right for me (and for several hundred people here who also agree!). There is safety in numbers -- and we outweigh them!

I do have to disagree with you about them not "working"...per se - because having had lost 60 pounds on weight watchers, it DOES "work" for actual weight loss - what it DOESN'T work for is MAINTENANCE! After I lost the weight - it was sooo hard to keep it off because the body NEEDS fat - and "low fat" diets do not work for long term. I couldn't keep eating such low-calorie, low-fat, high sugar foods. Now that I know better that sugar and carbs are the culprit instead of low fat - but while limiting fat and calories DO work in the short term, one can NOT do that for life. Now that I know better and the body NEEDS fat.

Saying that, I must say, I do absolutely agree with you on how they ARE always constantly changing to make things "better"...because they are always trying to find ways to make it work "for life" - and I know there is NO way I could have continued to count points for life...which some people would say "well, you're counting CARBS"...yeah - I am - but at least on atkins, it is SO much easier because you know what's low carb AND what keeps you satisfied when you actually allow your body what it WANTS instead of having to constantly figure up throughout the day how many points you have left.

Plus - atkins IS actually healthier because unlike all those other diets - it actually DOES teach you how to eat HEALTHY instead of "well, i've got 4 points left...do I eat this very healthy vegetable in a little bit of animal fat or butter? or do I eat this "fake" dessert chock full of sugar because I have a few 'points' left?...

That's actually something I've had to get used to with atkins is yeah, i've got 20 carbs a day - but it's not like i can use them on just anything - i actually have to choose the RIGHT foods to eat and not just allow myself crap because i've got the points allowance for it.

ok, enough of that now. sorry i just had to add my $.02 plus i'm bored on saturday night! hehe.

Marvid -- what you have is a case of a doc who never figured out biochemistry and basic math in medical school, who now finds it easier to be cognitively lazy. Easier to be a sheep than think.

Re: Just had a lecture from my doctor

Sounds like time for a new GP! My ex-GP was much the same. Thought he knew everything about Atkins, and even told me that eating a fry up every morning will kill me. Oh dear, I guess that greasy, fried breakfast that EVERYONE on Atkins eats EVERYDAY is out of the window(!)

But I changed GPs a few years ago, for mental health reasons, and I found the sweetest, nicest Doc ever! She told me herself that Dr's come to their own conclusions about things. She isn't afraid to admit she doesnt know something, isnt afraid to go ask another GPs advice, or look it up in a book or online. With Atkins, I gave her my typical days menu, and she was impressed, as she was when she saw my weight loss and increased health.

But apparently my grilled chicken and vegetables dinner is going to kill me, according to GP #1, unless I add bread or a potato. LETHAL!

Re: Just had a lecture from my doctor

I'm lucky in that my doctor has a fellow doctor in his practice that does (or at least used to do) the atkins diet. I guess if one of his colleagues is doing the diet then it couldn't be too bad. Anyway, he always asks me how the diet is working for me. On a side note, my cholesterol levels were the best that he had ever seen when I was on the diet years ago.

Re: Just had a lecture from my doctor

I'll have my newest cholesterol results shortly, had blood taken at the health fair and they mail them.

But like the OP said... you know when it is working. I feel like a million bucks. I handle stress well. I can't wait to hit the gym tomorrow and swim. No pain/numbness in my thigh. No backaches at work. Sleep like a baby.

And here is the kicker... bless their hearts, my mother, quite heavy, and sister, morbidly obese... like 380 both started programs last autumn. Mother went to one of the 'diet doctors' for the 'two shakes and a sensible dinner' plan.. pricey. She lasted til November. Sister did Weight Watchers, ( Don't most MD's love WW?) not as pricey but certainly not free... she didn't make it past December either. Sister hasn't regained much but Mom has, neither lost more than 25 pounds.

Thanks to OUR good doctor, rest his soul, I am running around like a 20 year old having a blast. Shopping like crazy (at thrift stores but that's my thing!) and don't hate trying on clothes. It's great. Maybe I can convince them soon!

Re: Just had a lecture from my doctor

I am a nurse and have been around many doctors in my career. This one is as varied as they come. Some doctors advocate Adkins and some do not. I feel with them, it is through personal experience what has worked for them. There is also mixed evidence based research on Adkins. However, overall it has been found to be quite amazingly pro Adkins.

Adkins is afterall, once induction is over and maintenance begins a sensible diet that is now being advocated for diabetics. The trend now for daibetics is not a specific caloric intake, but rather "carb counting". It has been found that the diabetics on the "carb counting" regime actually are more compliant in their nutritional endeavors.

Ignorance can seep into the educated medical community as well as anywhere. Just keep on plugging away and become his "lab rat" to prove his ignorance!

Re: Just had a lecture from my doctor

Yeah, my doctor told me that Atkins will kill, that I did not need to eat meat everyday, and that I should only consume 10% of my calories from fat. He also told me about some study where men that ate 65% of their calories from fat had blood sugars in the diabetic range and men that ate 10% of their calories from fat and ALL THE SUGAR THEY COULD TOLERATE had blood sugars in the non-diabetic range. I thought "yeah whatever! You don't know how much sugar I can tolerate as I am (was) seriouslly sugar addicted!"

So then, I get my lab results back and guess what! My cholestorol numbers were in the optimal range and my blood sugar level was in the non-diabetic range (HbA1c of 5.8, down from 9.25). Since I finally have health insurance, I will be getting another doctor. It took some research, but I found an Endo who supports low carb dieting! YAY!
