the cramps are still there ,i dont think im going to be able to do this anymore i really dont, whats the point in loosing weight if my legs hurt so much from the cramps i cant train ,its 4:30 am and im awake now because of cramps in my lower legs thankfully it wasnt my thigh like it has been as that is worse ,but im still limping now and ive gotta go to the gym at 6 the last couple of days ive stopped taking the crampex but ive doubled up on the magnesium so thats now 500mg and im also taking 3 x potassium 99mg ,i just dont think i can take this anymore i love the weight loss but im wondering if its worth it im also drinking at least 2 litres of water a day and i havnt really had hard sessions this week ,only monday bit of cardio i didnt even do karate last night ,i dont really want to take the crampex every night as they are quite expensive and like last night i thought my legs felt fine at bed time and was hoping the supplements might be working then ouch there back ,this is so frustrating i so wanna stick with this

Jake why not move up some more in OWL? Maybe the increase in carbs will take the edge off the cramps. Maybe increasing the minerals in your food through OWL would allow them to be absorbed better than the supplement form. Hate to see you give up but this is all I can think of for you at the moment. I have also heard of folks needing additional manganese and potassium and not just the magnesium. I am throwing out whatever I can think of for you that may help.

      Hi Jake,
I know you say you are drinking about 2 liters of water a day, but I wonder if that is enough. At 245, I drink about 120 ounces, or the equivalent of around 3-1/2 liters a day. I got this figure by halving my weight.
Your post got me curious enough to do an internet search on the subject, and the first major article I came to was by the Mayo Clinic. What I found real interesting is in their list of possible causes (if you ignore all the disease and drug related causes) , the only one that popped out at me is dehydration. The second one is electrolite imbalance, which is what you are taking the supplements for.
      Night leg cramps - MayoClinic.com
The second return gave me the same information
Leg Cramp | Charley Horse | Muscle Cramp
So if you were to continue your supplements, make sure your sodium intake is adequate, and up you fluid intake.....

Jake, I'm not sure how things are working in the UK, but have you seen your physician about this? What we are doing here is just guessing...

More guessing... but if you post a menu again (include quantities and net carbs for everything), maybe we can suggest adding this and that... and changing this with that... to make it nutritionally better. I know you've moved to OWL. Are you in OWL Rung 1 or higher?

Oh, and I agree with what was said about water. You need more than 2 L, imo.

On your water thread I left a website address that discusses other things that may help-- black cohosh, potassium, right ratio of calcium to magnesium, etc.

many thanks all of you i was really down this morning as being woken with the cramps is very frustrating especially when i thought they had gone ,im gonna try drinking more water perhaps that could be the cause, especially as of the exercise and the amount i sweat so im gonna try to up it to 3 litres if poss and see if this helps ,also im gonna start to add few more veggies , is it too soon to add fruit i was thinking perhaps a banana mid morning instead of eggs or couple of slices of bacon ,and again thanks everyone for your advice its very reasuring to know people are there
              big thanks to all

                From the USDA Nutrient Database:

An avocado has 690 mg potassium.

A large banana has 487 mg potassium.

Yes, it's WAAAAAY too soon for a banana ... and besides they don't have as much potassium as you think.

Eat an avocado if you want a potassium rich food.

Yes, not enough water can indeed cause cramps.

Don't "try" drinking more water ... just do it.

Re: cant take much more of this (cramps)

During exercise as you sweat, your body loses potassium, sodium, sulfate, chloride, and magnesium. I'm really wondering what your sodium is doing... Eating foods like bacon, bologna, ham etc... might actually be helpful in that they are high in sodium.

Also, don't expect supplements to start working the day you take them... give it a couple of weeks. If your body is low on a mineral it will take a bit to get it built back up in your system...

Another thing to consider is electrolyte drops i.e.:

There has to be SOMETHING out there that will help you...

Re: cant take much more of this (cramps)

I found this info about sports drinks and making your own a while back. Can't remember where so I cannot post a source
Sports drinks contain small amounts of sodium and potassium.

Sodium - 8 oz of a typical sports drink contains 110 mg of sodium. This is the amount of sodium in a small pinch of salt. A teaspoon of salt contains 2300 mg of sodium, so basically you need 1/20th of a teaspoon. Half an ounce of salted peanuts (about 14 peanuts) has this much sodium, and also about 90 mg of potassium.
Potassium - 8 oz of a typical sports drink contains 30 mg of potassium. A cup of tea has 88 mg of potassium.

How to Make a Low-Carb Sports Drink

Two tablespoons of lemon juice contain almost exactly the amount of potassium in 8 oz of a typical sports drink. So, if you want to make your own low-carb sports drink, it's quite easy. Just mix together:
                      • 1 cup (8 oz) water (not carbonated)
                      • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
                      • small pinch of salt
                      • Flavoring and sweetener to taste
                      • The ingredients shown here are induction-legal too!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
