  • Telling people I'm on Atkins

If I happen to mention that I am on Atkins people ALWAYS say something bad about it!!

My gosh I’m so sick of people – If you told them you are (for lunch) going to eat a bowl of ice cream – fried French fries with your double cheese burger they wouldn’t say a thing …. In fact they would probably say ‘Yummy’ but if you say I am eating a low carb high protein diet Atkins --- they give you all sorts of hell…. They say like ‘’ohh, that’s not good for you – you better be careful’’…………… if it so ‘bad’ for me can you tell me WHY do I feel better now than I have felt in YEARS!!???

It’s so very strange --- I was just wondering if this happens to ya’ll and if it does what do you say to that person??

yes, it happens! I chose to be very vocal about my way of eating - and back it up with how great I feel [skin, hair, mood, etc...]. All the great food. If people show interest, I'll discuss it. If they want to argue, I have facts. If they are just idiots, I shut up and ignore, not worth my time.

Be proud of yourself, it will show thru!

but if you say I am eating a low carb high protein diet Atkins
FYI - Atkins is a moderate protein diet, not high protein. "High protein" tends to get people in a tizzy over kidney issues.

Anyway, to your question, we've all experienced this. I rarely use "Atkins" with people who I don't know well. For them, I say "I've been watching what I eat, eating more vegetables, exercising more, and cutting back on processed and refined foods and grains." Invariably, I get praise for that. It's a shame that Atkins is still so maligned in this society.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

One more thing I'll add, I've noticed some people react differently depending on how "successful" I've been on Atkins. When I went from 240-230, the reaction was "We'll see how long this lasts/good luck/you can't live like that." Now that I'm 56 lbs down (240-184), the reaction is "Wow/you look great/congrats." So, human nature being what it is, you'll get more "acceptance" as you progress down the scale.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

It might be fun to give silly answers instead of saying you are on Atkins after losing a lot of weight. If someone says says "WOW, you look great, how did you lose all that weight....?" (Say you lost 50# and it really shows)

Answer back very seriously, "I stopped putting cream in my morning coffee."

Or, "I stopped putting butter on my toast".

They will stand there in awe that you could lose weight in that way------and then they can't criticize your "eating plan." (Atkins)

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

I've learned that how I eat is nobody else's business ... and they're really not all that interested anyway.

If I'm not having something, I might say, "I don't eat sugar/flour or whatever it is".

People are more interested in what's on their plate anyway.

Also, this phrase works better than saying "Atkins" (since most people are clueless):

"I'm eating whole, unprocessed foods, no sugar, no refined carbohydrates, heart healthy fats, lots of vegetables, low glycemic fruits."

By then they generally want to talk about something else.

I tell them I eat low carb, low sugar because I'm diabetic. Nothing they can say to that. Even though, eating this way... I'll be reversing my diabetes in no time. My Dr. already cut my medication in half. I mean, what can they say to that?

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

i say 'locarb' and change the topic. Unfortunately the late, great Dr Atkins and his innovative way of eating has generally gotten bad press over the years and so many of us believe what we read in the newspapers. Atkins is what works for me and if my friend/relative/acquaintance chooses to believe propaganda then their entitled to their (erroneous) belief and i'll go stick to my belief and work towrds results. IMHO Atkins is worthwhile for the energy boost alone, the weightloss is the bonus for me.

I'll second that, been going for only 4 days and I can feel the difference already, I didn't expect that at all!

I have however found that being big (6'2" and 329lbs) tends to elicit acceptance at what I tell them I eat......I wonder why?? I could tell them I eat skunks and I'd probably have no argument either ....once I get to my goal weight I'll probably have to work on a "mean look" instead

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

Oh, when people ask, I tell them Atkins. Seems like my whole family has tried it so they know what it actually is. I do admit to eating off plan sometimes so it isn't as if I've been 100% the whole time. But even when I do that now, its not like I am eating loads of carbs. Gradually my eating habits have gotten better. I don't eat as much as I use to. I am pretty use to eating this way and its how I shop and eat now. People know it didn't happen overnight. Over all, when you've lost tons of weight, people accept whatever you say did it. They don't try to reform me or try to tell me what to do. Sometimes if they say Atkins didn't work for them, I mention that I had to count calories too at first. That is the most common mistake I see people make just starting out with an unlimited eating plan. Too much food or not enough. I've ended staying the same weight for a little while so I'm good with how I need to eat to stay the same weight. I just hate to see people look at me like they couldn't do it too. You make good changes in your diet and eat right and the weightloss will happen. Anything is possible!

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                              1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                              2nd mini goal: 140!
                              3rd mini goal:135!
                              4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.
