Re: Starting over- will I see the entire weight gain tomorrow?

I am living at home....I have to get my own diet food alot of the time since it's just my dad and I. My friend and I are doing it together, her mom had done it and showed us all the books, etc. I have hypothyroidism..I have heard (I think) that low carb is good for thyroid patients because we process carbs differently, and store them as fat more. My mom had hypo too, so I've had it all my life. You didn't really ask to hear my life story, sooo....okay...darn it. I liked your advice....

So is she not "doing it" anymore?

You need to understand that Atkins is a way of eating for life, not just a 2-month (or whatever) diet. Don't screw up your metabolism by jumping back and forth between different diets.

showed us all the books, etc.
You'd do better having your own book, instead of relying on someone else's. You can get it cheap from Amazon or half.com.

Yeah, she basically fell off the wagon- didn't even wait for it to stop first-and then got run over and smushed in the dirt- twice.

Are you allowed to (i can't think of another word for 'do')...incorporate Atkins into your life, (I was planning on staying on induction for about 2 or 3 months) and then slowly adding back in the foods, and eventually switching back into Weight Watchers? Is that possible? Or No?

So she's not using the book currently, is she?

While you are waiting for your own book, maybe she could lend you hers. Don't read only the Induction chapter. That's good for a quick start, but it doesn't really help you understand Atkins.

What edition of the book does she have, btw? You want the 2002 edition, which is the last one published by Dr. Atkins.

That's what you should do. But from the rest of your sentence, I think we have different a understanding of this...

I had this idea when I started Atkins too. It's a bad one. Move to OWL after the first two weeks of Induction. Progressing through all the phases of Atkins will not only help you lose weight, but will also teach you how to maintain your goal weight.

and then slowly adding back in the foods
          That's what OWL is about.

and eventually switching back into Weight Watchers?
Why? Why not stick to Atkins?

          Is that possible? Or No?
It's "possible"... but it would mean using Atkins as a quick fix. It's not meant to be used this way. As I've said, it's supposed to be a way of eating for life.

            Hi Lauren,

As Georgiana says, if you do Atkins properly and follow through with ongoing weight loss, you will end up eating in a healthy way that allows for many healthy choices that will keep you slim and give you variety. That's why having the book and understanding Atkins is so important. Then you realize there is no need to switch-- you already have a lifelong plan that offers variety and manageable choices for life.

Reading the entire book puts each phase into perspective. It is not meant to be done piecemeal. Once you read it, you will understand why we give you this advice.

As far as being liked-- most of the moderators and regular posters answer many many posts each day. That means the advice is usually straightforward and to the point. Not always time for warm fuzzies. It doesn't mean you aren't liked. Sometimes it isn't what you want to hear. Sometimes we misunderstand what you are really asking. Sometimes, like with your question, it is unanswerable because everyone is different and the answer won't necessarily be right for your situation. Also, bear in mind that folks my age (49) and your age (17) probably process and give advice a bit differently.

            GOAL THREE 199 ONE-DERLAND
            FINAL GOAL 165

It's not about the results. Its about the process.
