  • From Calorie Counting to Atkins

Hi, So far Ive been successful retricting/counting calories, but I just dont think I can do it anymore. Im so tired of counting & measuring.

Its been a great two months of steady weight loss & Im finally under 200 lbs. My friends & family are advising me not to switch to Atkins because Im having success through calorie counting.

Ive lost 23 pounds so far by restricting calories. Im averaging a 2 pound loss per week, but Im really intrigued by the Atkins diet & success stories. If I can get through induction, I know I can eat this way.

My calories are currently at 1350 per day & Im starving. As my weight has dropped so have my calories & Im getting to the point where Im really hungry during the day. I exercise a little but not enough to eat whatever I want at this point.

Just looking for advice - Thanks so much!!!!

      >> My calories are currently at 1350 per day & Im starving.>>

And your "friends" think that's "working"?

You should be eating around 2000 calories with Atkins.

When you say you're starting Induction "soon" ... when is "soon"?

Soon means as soon as I can get to the grocery & buy my induction foods (in the next week or so)

Thanks for replying - I really appreciate the advice

          What's "or so"?

It doesn't seem as if you have really decided that Atkins is what you're going to do.

It doesn't seem as if you really have a plan ... there's some vague time in your post.

Can you go to the grocery store today?

          Can you go tomorrow?

If you're waiting until you get paid, when will that be.

          See what I mean?

Well you have already shown that you have plenty of will power. That will still come in handy. Low carbing involves different body effects than low calorie.
So you think you will be able to live with the choices on Atkins longer?
I wish you lots of luck. Just follow the plan as it is in the book. That is what we all do.

Sorry for being vague. Ive been eating low calorie for 2 months with great success & Im a little nervous about switching over to Atkins, so I posted my concerns on this forum. Im not worried that the diet wont work, Im nervous about the transition. I know Atkins is a great diet & Im not here to argue that, I just wanted simple advice on transitioning from one to the other.

              Thank you again!

                >>Ive been eating low calorie for 2 months with great success>>

                Other than being hungry?

I wouldn't call that a "success"! And ... can you imagine eating like you are for the rest of your life?

                >>I just wanted simple advice on transitioning from one to the other. >>

How many net carbs are you eating now, while you're doing low calorie?

Get rid of the junk you might be eating ... and start preparing a shopping list for Atkins.

                Then start Induction.

Re: From Calorie Counting to Atkins

I would print out the Induction food list and develop your menu from that. Using a food tracker like FitDay or Fatsecret will be extremely helpful.

It is awkward at first...many of us came from low fat and/or calorie restricted diets. What I found to be the hardest to get used to (but the easiest to love) was using fats again. And not being afraid of a chicken leg or thigh with the skin on or even chicken wings with the skin on.

I wouldn't concentrate on calories at first but rather start with the required veggies, add a protein of your choice and some fat (cook in oil/butter and/or add some afterwards). Your protein amount may be larger than on your calorie restricted diet. Maybe not. You shouldn't be starving on Atkins and it may take a bit of time to figure out portion amounts that work. The food trackers will help you figuring out the right amount of veg, protein and fat.

Atkinsgal08, Don't mean to bring this up in here, but why do you get so harsh with people? She's just asking for some friendly advice... I admit I'm new here, but I have read plenty of your posts and I'm sorry to say they come across a bit pushy sometimes...

Sorry you don't like my writing, BigCarl.

My advice is friendly ... perhaps I want people to have success ... and am over enthusiastic about helping them get started on the right foot.

Perhaps you shouldn't read my posts, then?

when im makeing a post i usually have to re read it a few times to make sure its right and is good but doing so requires alot more time to actually make the post but if i had to make sure it couldn't be taken the wrong way and thouht of as pushy it would take me even longer to post

Atkinsgal08 advice is good and helpful i have faith that her goal is not to be pushy. she has done lots of helpful posts

i remember when i was new to these forums i was voiceing my opinions and the people who replied to them were really nice but some i thought were pushy and i got a little annoyed but i see it was silly for me to think that

but i do think for people with a post count of say 12 or less people could make sure there posts have a less possibility of being taken the wrong way because as a new member to the forums they could be on edge and easily take things the wrong way so its good to make sure they feel welcome
