  • Setting weight loss goals...

I'm a little torn over what my weight loss goals should be. Even though I am only really focusing on 10 pounds at a time right now, its still good to have an overall weight loss goal. I'd like to get down to 150 pounds, but I haven't weighed that much since I was a sophomore in high school. I am almost 5'8 (5'7.75") and definitely have a large frame. While discussing my weight loss goals with my mother, she reminded me that the last time I managed to get anywhere close to 150 pounds, my bones were sticking out and I looked rather sickly.

I've done research online, and so far, the "healthy" weight range for someone with my height and frame would be between 158-173 pounds. Does this sound right?
    Mini-goals:
    199lbs - In progress!
    BMI 29 - In progress!
    170lbs - In progress!
    Size 12 - In progress!

    Re: Setting weight loss goals...

I picked my goal weight mainly to have something so I could make a ticker. Right now I'm trying to get below 200#s. I started at 304#s so 150 sounds like skinny minny to me. Maybe not though...when I was thin I weighed around 136.

So I have no idea what my final goal weight will be. I have to keep in mind the saggy skin factor too. I figure that I will stop when I look and feel "right." Don't know what that number will be.

I wouldn't worry too much about a final goal weight number at this time.

There are places online where you can search for the wieght that your peers would say that you should weigh. I am 6'3 and medically I have been told that I should be between 180-204 lbs. I have set my goal weight to 210 pounds, but even at that weight I will look like I am going to die of starvation.

This is such a hard answer, but I did a ton of research online by typing in different weights and getting pictures to review. I typed in 6'3 225, 6'3 210, 6'3 200 and the only one I really thought looked healthy was 6'3 210.

Just keep going and decide as you go along.....

          Re: Setting weight loss goals...

I think it's good to have a goal to shoot for, but keep it flexible. To me, it's more about how you look and feel and not what the scale says. I remember a few years ago, there was a member here that weighed about the same as I did, but she looked 10 times better because she was toned and fit. That really made me realize the power of exercise. She was (is?) an exercise junkie. lol
I'm also 5'8" and I'm at 143 right now. I have some fat around my stomach and thighs that I'm really trying to lose and my goal is set for 130-135 because that's when I felt good. That being said, if I looked how I want to, I wouldn't care if the scale said 150. Nobody sees the number anyway. ;-)

              I keep this site bookmarked:

              Better Ideal Weight Body Calculations

I really like it because it includes so many calculations and one lets you pick frame size. My frame size is between small and medium so I picked a goal weight that was at the high end for small and the low end for medium. But bone density and muscle mass are key factors, so I'll see how I feel and look as I get closer to the goal.

That site was very interesting. My Ideal weight is 199 (woo hoo I'm almost at goal! LOL) and my Medical Recommendation is 118. Like that's going to happen...NOT!

Kind of a big range there...I guess the "pros" don't know either!

                      Re: Setting weight loss goals...

I stopped with the goal issue. I don't know where I want to be. I've used that site before and it tells me I am in goal but most women my age would like to be 128lbs. Yep, that would be nice.

I think its good to have a minimum goal and go from there. But not to go so low that it's not attainable without starving yourself.

All I know 135.2 is not where I want to be. I still have 3 pairs of pants that are too snug. Maybe when I fit into them again I will be done.

I don't know where I am going, but I know where I am heading. Get it?

                            Re: Setting weight loss goals...

I used the BMI chart to figure my goal. At 174 I will no longer be obese, I'll just be overweight, haha! 5 more pounds! Then for the next 30 lbs I'll be overweight. It seems to match the "People's Choice" on the website mentioned. 144 should be my goal for my height & age.

However, I think my husband will prefer me to stay above 150, maybe even at 155, but I want to feel the best I can, that's how i'll judge it. So it really is in the eye of the beholder!!

AND!!!!! I'm so glad that I'm losing slowly (never thought I'd say that) because I've had time to recognize the weight loss & deal with my environment in all kinds of ways, from what I can & can't eat to how I feel around other people & what kind of clothes I'm comfortable with.

And it is real weight loss! I know calories are not the only factor, but I think they are a significant part of the equation. And if a pound = 3500 calories, it is pretty hard to create a calorie deficient of 3500 calories over night. When I see a pound + weigh loss over night, I brace myself because there is a very high probability that I am going to see a gain, or at the very least, a stall over the next few days.
