  • Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

i just got done with chapter 16.
i think i was a little shocked to read again one of the tips at the end.

Keep a controlled carb bar or ready-to-drink shake on the hand to feed the hunger pangs and keep you from being tempted by the snack vending machine.
i will say i have had the the endulge bars and i have had the shakes but not since i quit working in the church kitchen. time allows me now to eat better now. i guess i am thinking if you are tempted by the snack vending machines you might need to check to see what you have eaten. may something has been triggered. if it's just a snack i want, i cut me a few slices of pepperoni or eat a piece of ham. that tip just strikes me as odd.

the only other time i was underweight happened to be when i did atkins the first time. 1975 and i went to give blood and they said i didn't weigh enough. i thanked them and left. lol

Thanks for the responses about the gravy. I'm trying them all. lol

I've never been underweight in my life! Well, maybe the day I was born. I weighed in at 6lbs. 5 oz. It's been a battle ever since. I can blame my angelic mother, but only for the first so many years. Then it was all me shoving those carby things into my mouth. Never Again!

Dr. A peppers those little 'hints' (to carry/eat 'controlled carb' snacks & shakes) throughout the book. He even includes a couple of shakes in his specific induction menu plan. He was smart enough to realize that he could make some money with Atkins products. And although they may not be the best snack alternative, sometimes it's tough to carry around other viable options. The first generation of bars & shakes (the ones that he references in the 2002 DANDR version) did not include sugar alcohols and I think that is really where some people are getting in trouble.

He does not go into great detail about sugar alcohols and in the book and kind of treats them as the category that doesn't really have a place on the nutrition label but nonetheless needs to be included. His blanket assessment was that they are not metabolized by the body, although some members here feel that consuming SAs will slow or stall their ketosis.

Can someone shed some light on the effect of SAs? DOes it affect you and does this affect your state of ketosis? Are some SAs worse than others?

I know it would be best to try to avoid them if possible but i am trying to get a better understanding. And do SAs compare to the way fiber is metabolized?

I would say the SAs do NOT compare to the way that fiber is metabolized. Fiber has no effect on your glycemic level whereas SAs certainly do, some more significantly than others. I recently had a "run-in" with SAs and did some heavy reading on the subject.

There is some great info in the link:
                http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...sugar+alcohols

                This article also:
                http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm

                Particularly this table:
Glycemic Index and Energy Values of Polyols

                Polyol GI (glucose=100)
                Maltitol syrup (intermediate) 53
                Maltitol syrup (regular) 52
                Maltitol syrup (high) 48
                Polyglycitol (hydrogenated starch hydrolysate) 39
                Maltitol syrup (high-polymer) 36
                Maltitol 36
                Xylitol 13
                Isomalt 9
                Sorbitol 9
                Lactitol 6
                Erythritol 0
                Mannitol 0

which lists the glycemic energy values of each SA. You can see that 1g of maltitol syrup can effect your blood sugar equal to half a gram of sugar!!!
                Best Wishes!

check out how the testing is done to see if they effect folk. first they got 10 count them 10 healthy males 9hello how about some females and some overweight folk too?)then they did before and after eating blood sugar testing. the tests stop at the 3 hr mark some go to the 4 hour mark some just use the before and 30 min after consumption testing). not a big rise in that time okay we say no effect!

BUT thye combine them with very high fiber high protein high fat foods that spend a good deal of that time frame still inside the belly. Then they also know that the gut bacteria break them down into actual molecules that we can digest but cause they are slowly pbrokendown those molecules will not all get absorbed cause ideally they will not breakdown before they have passed into the large intestine where less food absorbing cells exist. So if the company has slowed the passage of the food with the high fat high proitein food this absorption will occur in the small intestine.

next the health of the gut bacteria will effect for you how much you are effected got healthy gut flora? you get good reaction going and digestible byproducts ( makes you want to run out and get it now so you too can digest bacteria poop doesn't it?)

finally your individual sppeed of food pasaage will effect how much you absorb too. if you got slow bowles then it stays in you longer getting reacted longer and absorbed more.

it is an individual thing but do you want to use yourself as the guinie pig to determine if they will or won't wreck your weight loss? you can get packets of mayo or salad dressing and pouches of tuna salmon, chciken or dried beef and fix an emervency food just as easily as riping open a bar oe shake.

and here i am.... the procrastinator of exercise once upon a time.... oh i walked and i did table and chairs for a long time at church before ever doing this but bking and weights and ball and band were not part of my lifestyle.

this part and particulary now in 17 and 18 he mentions exercise much more. it is as important as doing 20 carbs on induction, as important as not treating this woe as a get skinny quick plan. i'ts important. many people i see are not stepping up to the exercise plate. we sit here and tell people to up the vegatables or drink more water, don't cheat and congratualte losses. we should also be stressing exercise.

my land...is that me typing? or has barbiebabe taken over my body?

not only is the exercise important for our matabolism but for our bones, our well being as we age.

on a separate note: there is one thing that i have gotten down pat as it relates to lifetime maintenance. page 210

Promise to weigh yourself at least once a week.
but now you peeps on induction, remember, he says stay off that scale during that 2 weeks.

                    and yet another note:
i liked reading the misconceptions about atkins. page 223 - 225. see point 5...... exercise.

Are you taking about the daily intake for protein? It's 0.6 grams per kilogram body weight. Historically, that number is a minimum number, not a maximum for adults. But everyone is different so you might be able to eat more or less.

Re: the plug for the Atkins products.

That's a product-placement add for the Atkins products. But also note that by the time you get to OWL, Pre-Maintenance and definitely by Maintenance, you should already know yourself in terms of how you react to food and your food coping skills. So, technically a Pre-Maintenancer has more insight to these things than a newbie on Day 2 of the diet and might want to try out a bar or shake or whatever else.

that's what should have been said ... the explanation of why he would suggest eating the bar or drinking the shake.

i think i might have been hooked on those endulge bars. they were quick and easy and i never ate more than 2 a day (as i can remember) and mostly just one a dayy. i was glad when they were out of the house. i was well along in my loss too. just a cautious note for those coming up behind me.

Just finished reading the "Eating in the Real World" section. Macadamia nuts have been a savior for me on more than one occasion.

Work was always easy for me with this WOE. I brought everything I ate...only went into the faculty room to use the microwave to heat lunch...stayed right by the microwave and didn't venture near the vending machines in the beginning. Now they don't bother me at all.

Also, training those special people...in the beginning it was a bit difficult for my DH to accept this WOE. He does most of the cooking since he gets home first. Had to really train him with regards to not dredging chicken in flour that I was going to have. Eventually, he just stopped using it all together. He's actually doing a "modified Atkins" or "Atkins by proxy" as he calls it. He's cut way down on his intake of flour, sugar, pasta, and breads. Still eats them, and that's OK. They don't bother me anymore. This is how I eat from now on.

                            On to part 3!
