My mom was called a borderline diabetic. She didn't have to take injections and was able to control it through her diet. I didn't realize until reading this chapter that we can actually become diabetic because of our diet. I always knew sugar and all that was bad for it, but I didn't know it actually caused it. Yikes!

do you have to be overweight to be diabetic?
My dad was never overweight. His diabetes showed up after he had heart surgery. I'm like you, I don't know what to ask either!

i can read and read again that a person who is diabetic can do atkins. we all just read that and i know there are diabetics on this board that are having success.

my buddy chose to do sugar busters. i know how the high carbs in our systems don't work for weight loss. her sugar busters allows for whole wheat pasta, crackers and i don't know what all. their counter was always full of "legal" things that i wouldn't go near. did i read it right that she shouldn't be doing even the whole wheat because it is higher carb?

i don't know if i even asked that right. totally confusing for me.

would atkins be better for her, or any diabetic, than sugar busters?

My dad was pre-diabetic due to his weight and diet (as far as I know). He told me before he died that he'd like for me to lose weight so that I wouldn't have to worry about that (among other things). I owe any success to him. I don't understand it all either, but if it can be prevented through diet and exercise or whatever, I'm all for it and will do it.

i think you are right kate, if we can avoid it then we should. for the younger ones on this board, i think they weill be giving themselves such a head start with their health to lose the weight now and avoid so many of the problems the perhaps us older ones have come across. i am one of the fortunate ones, not haveing to deal with diabetes or have yeast problems. i got creeky knees but they are better after losing weight. i'd had some bone loss, which i hope is slowing down.

as far as the yeast chapter goes, it seems very easy to check for this. early on, i did the spit test just for a trial. i have not had problems with this either. my journey has been a relatively easy one. and as we can read, people can get control of this issue too. it means doing without some things for the moment but once again, we see Dr. A telling us how some of our medical issues can indeed be taken care of by doing this woe.

are there any questions concerning the yeast chapter?
has anyone gone on to food intolerances? or onto the protecting your heart?

we don't have much to read. next part is our food and recipes. i know many will not sit and read that like they have the other. i do hope everyone will try at least one recipe for the 4th of july (u. s. readers)

Dr. A characterizes obesity & Type II diabetes as two aspects of the same illness. In the book he cites that over 80% of Type II diabetics are obese. He has helped many diabetics in his lifetime with this WOE, and what impressed me most was he could actually help a good number of them to get off their medication.

Type I diabetes is the type of diabetes that he believes is an autoimmune disorder, whichis unrelated to dietary habits. If you grew up with someone who had diabetes as a child, this is likely the case.

Type II is "caused by a genetic propensity for the disease combined with improper eating habits."

Why are there so many adults being diagnosed with Type II? He believes it is the bad American diet that led them down the path ~ too many bad carbs. He explains an inverse relationship b/t the reduction in fat in diets & the increase in Type II cases.

Although he warns that "diabetes may be creeping up on you", he sheds some positive light on the disease ~ it is almost "completely preventable" & "virtually always improvable and partially reversible, even late in the illness."

THis was important info for me and as someone with a family history of diabetes, I have decided the Atkins WOE is something that I could do for my health and that I would not go down the same sad path I have seen other family members going!

The yeast discussion was interesting and I have never heard of it as an inhibitor to weight loss. There was just an AP article out (yesterday?) that supplements Dr. A's reasons for "metabolic resistance" I can't remember if yeast was there but there were some overlap of Dr. A's theories.

                this impressed me, too!

all through this medical part it has been reinforced that this woe is good for you. if there are no complications and done right, it will work. if there are problems, most if not all can be worked on to a positive conclusion. i know there have been many members of our ADBB that have had yeast problems and have worked them out successfully. same with our diabetic members.

i wonder, as Dr. Atkins mentions further study and wanting to find more answers for more solutions, what will become of his research now. i wonder if there will be someone to pick up his work as he left it and continue on the same path.

as far as the food intolerences go, i didn't have much trouble with that either. i feel almost bad that i didn't or don't have any these problems. i know for some members, and i won't mention names, the things mentioned in this part and other problems like thyroid and pcos, have created problems from day one. it was easy for me to stick things. how much more rewarding it is for those that suffer from diabetes, pcos, yeast and food intolerences to be able to do this plan.
                ---------------------
there has not been too many that have chimed in since we hit this part of the book. i would like to know that every one is still on track and reading.
i know and realized that if one is not confronted with these diseases or problems, the book may lose some of its interest. believe me when i say, had it not been for the challenge and the thought of letting someone down, i probably would have skipped this part too. there in was the challenge: to read it even if it didn't apply. the button (which is ready and waiting!) will be given for those that read along.

Oh I'm reading along, I was reading last night again. I guess I just am not familiar at all with diabetes and haven't understood a lot of it.... my mom being borderline or pre-diabetic is the only one in my family that's ever had it.

It's obvious that my unhealthy habits have left me prone to this and I'm so happy that I have the knowledge to start now to prevent it.

About those food intolerances, I don't think any of those are a problem for me either so I'm very lucky regarding all this.

Diabetes and heart disease run in my family. I was borderline diabetic prior to starting Atkins. I am no longer borderline diabetic. My levels are within normal limits.

I was also lactose intolerant. I wasn't able to have whole milk without experiencing extreme stomach discomfort. When I started Atkins, I thought, "whole cream"...that's gonna be rough. I tried it after being on Atkins for a while and to my surprise, I didn't have an adverse reaction.

As far as "Spreading the Word"...I'm definitely spreading the word every chance I get. When people ask me how I've lost the weight I have so far, I proudly say, "I follow the Atkins way of eating". I have pictures of before and now that I carry and show them to anyone who will look at them.

Now to the recipes section...in the entire time I've had this book, I've never tried a recipe from it. Have to change that.

I was privilidges to follow Canuks journey from an out of control diabetic wasting away from high sugar popping into chat asking a bizillion late night questions way back in 2003 to the in control smaller healtheir lady who became our diabetic mod and was featured in Dr Atkins dieabetic solutions book as an Atkins success.

I wish I had had this diabetic knowledge back in the early 80s as I saw my grandmother die from the complecations of diabetes as she wasted away.

Try to spread the word as much as I can, but here in Italy no one knows much about low carb at all and nobody has ever heard of Dr A!!! The good thing is that they are not judgemental at all... so I don't get the flak some of you americans and brits get.

i never got too much flak from anyone. when i would prepare meals at church, they were not low carb and of course, i would not eat. people would ask me about that but i just responded with things like "i have no need for mash potatoes" or "i'm low carbing and the cake and icing would send me into a spiral". they would comment with things like "well, yeah, i should probably do what you're doing b/c you look really great" or "i just don't have the willpower". responding to that would bring up small chat about atkins, allowable foods, how do you do it and so on.

i fear for my friend who has diabetes. she does sugar busters but she is not losing any more and because of other complications, bypass surgery is becoming a real option. i wish she would have done atkins with me fromt he get go. i think she would be 75 to 100 pounds lighter by now. with fewer complications, i would bet.

is anyone beginning to feel that the loss of weight is a secondary plus with atkins? i mean, our b/p readings are better, we get more active, blood work results are way better, our attitudes and how we view ourselves are better, our hearts are healthier and we slimmed down to boot! we did it and are doing it by eating and not starving! what could be better?
