I do. For me, weight loss is a pleasant side effect. I'm one of those people who Dr. Atkins said might see an improvement in things like allergies and asthma. I don't need to take as many medications for these as I had to before. In fact, it's down to 1 medication for 3 months of the year and 1 medication if I need it.

      that is great, megs!

i was so afraid of having to get on meds for high b/p (and all that goes with it) and that was the main reason for doing atkins. sure i was a plumpkin but the weight loss at this point is a very good bonus point!

i find it amazing that you and others with alergies can get off the meds for the most part.
here's a question and i'll bet you or 2ibg have an answer:

do the pharmacutical companies just hate atkins? we have read that so many, with so many ailments, taking so many pills can reverse or stop things. the drugs companies have had to take a hit when people start getting off the medications.
are they up in arms with doctors such as Dr. Atkins?

Medicines are basically toxic to our bodies. Part of the reason why doctors do certain lab tests if you're on certain medications is to make sure the medication isn't destroying your organs, like your liver or muscle.

If you can control your high blood pressure or diabetes by modifying your diet and walking 2 miles everyday---I think it's better than having to swallow a gazillion pills every morning and an equal amount at night.

That's not to say all medications are bad and have absolutely no use at all. But, the less you need to use the better, imo.

totally agree! i figure i might have to takes meds when i get old but the longer i can hold it off, the better.

i saw a special on nick knolte one time. i am pretty sure it was on him. looks like he's half wasted all the time. anyway, he was on a kick to take pills for all sorts of things. it show his stash he took in the a.m., the p,m., at noon, before meals, after meals, for this function and that...... probably which to take before weed and after.......lol
i think if i was taking that much stuff i'd just shoot myself. i would much rather eat my way to health! oh hey! i like that! EAT YOUR WAY TO HEALTH..... DO ATKINS!

I'm getting anxious for the food part.

I'm getting anxious for the food part too. I have noticed that since I started Atkins, my hip and knees don't hurt as much and my moods are better. I was able to stop taking my Premerin because those nasty hot flashes are almost gone. I think my doctor will be happy at my next check up.

terry lynn, i am sure when you see your doctor, i am going to see a big whoo hooo in your stats journal. i look forward to it!
i had problem knees too. years of abuse and that included extrea weight. they are much much better now!

              --------------------
i think an idea while we are going into the food and recipe part would be not only try at least one of the recipes in the book but to search out some of the recipes here on the board. there are so many! barbde and motherofgizmo have been working on new additions with pictures.

i think i will be particularly interested in some cooling drinks. non alcoholic, along the fruity end of things.

I've been looking at all the recipes lately and they look great. I picked up a few things to try a couple of them this weekend... jalapeno firecrackers.... parmesan meatballs..... shrimp. I'll be glad to add some of the fruity things back. And yogurt - I am craving that a lot! But I don't want to push yet... induction is still where I need to be.

I about killed my knees by carrying around all this weight and I have to say that losing just 20 pounds helped them to feel so much better. What I love now is when my hubby tells me that I no longer waddle. lol

Yeah, I don't want to be taking pills for this or pills for that either. I'd much rather do just what I'm doing by following the right way of eating and exercising.

I started Atkins to lose the weight, but after reading this board (and the book), my main concern is my health other than the weight. Don't get me wrong, the weight loss is still a main priority, but if I can be healthy and never lose another pound (which it sure seems like is happening right now), I'll still be happy. So yes, the weight loss is a great side effect.

I think back when I first started, I tried one or two recipes from the book, but I usually try things that are posted here. So far, I haven't been disappointed because everything is so good, even the things that don't sound like it. lol

are there any questions concerning the yeast chapter?
has anyone gone on to food intolerances? or onto the protecting your heart?
I have been reading about the food intolerances. The longer I practice this way of eating the less symptoms I have. I no longer have asthma attacks at all, and actually forgot my inhaler yesterday! I am losing very slowly, so I'll check out the yeast test. I allready feel so much better though, that even if I never lost another pound,I would keep to this diet forever! I used to absolutly love sugar. But I can't say I miss it. If I start feeling sorry for myself, I put a few pkts. of Splenda in my tea. I was suprised to read, on pg. 329, (In the last 20 years, science has discovered that elevated blood sugar levals appear to play a significate roll in the aging process itself.) WELL!! I mean, I knew sugar was bad for you, but aging? At 56, this is something that concerns me. lol. Thanks to everyone for all thier helpfull posts. Aspie1

You bet Aspie! Let's keep the ageing to an absolute minimum! Let's go backwards with Atkins! 52 here...going on 32!

on the topic of food intolerances, I can go on for hours. I don't have any allergies, but there are definitely foods i shouldn't eat. Fresh dairy for one. White flour. Both make me very gassy. So I just avoid them as much as possible. Pretty easy actually. I used to get indigestion all the time and could never figure out why. I started this wol and poof, no more gerd. Amazing. I always thought it was tomatoes or red meat, and come to find out it was bread and dough.

i love that story, sam! goes to show that maybe some of our ailments are indeed caused by what we eat!

i have been blessed to find chayote. i never noticed this type of squash before so it's brand new to me and i have been blessed to find several recipes on the board that deal with it. i am going to try to make the "apple" pie and see how my mom takes to it. lol she is a pie maker from way back. maybe i can impress her. i plan on making some faux tater salad for the 5th. i think my mom would enjoy that too.

is anyone trying any specific recipe from the book?

On rereading some of the recipes I cant help wishing Dr Atkins had marked the 'induction-legal' ones like Linda does on her lowcarb site to help those starting out on the WOE.

I know that he (as we have touched on earlier in this thread) expected us to have read and learned the rules, and so remember to check ingredients against the list of foods for whatever phase of Atkins we are following, but I have seen so many posts from newcomers using recipes 'from the book' that are just plainly incorrect for induction

So far I havent really used any of the recipes in DANDR, as I realised when starting induction that many of them were not allowed but there are quite a lot of interesting ones I might have a go at now I am at premaintenance and not so limited to ingredients.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I have to say it has been nice reading the book as a group. Even though I didn't participate in the conversations as much, it was good to read others thoughts on the different things. Not having someone here at home doing Atkins with me right now it made it easier having others going over the book at the same time. As someone said a while back, the weightloss part has become second to me, as much as I would like to lose another 30 pounds or so, the fact that this WOE or lifesytle has kept my Panic attacks (which I have suffered with for 20 years) much more under control. Seems the carbohydrates kind of set me off to them, so as long as I keep the carbs low I do so much better.
