The kids get up a lot and leave to go to the bathroom or whatever fidgety kids do. Every week, I see several obese, but beautiful children, that I just want to try to do something for while they are still young. One girl in particular does not have family members that are even overweight, but at about age 8, you can tell her clothes come from the adult racks. She must weigh 150 pounds and is short. She has such a beautiful face and is a sweet little girl. But, what can you do??? I don't know her parents well at all--just to speak to.

I keep thinking there must be something I can do for the children while they are still young, but don't know what, just yet. I don't have any experience with childhood obesity. I was a skinny kid in a large family of skinny people. My own children were always underweight and my son continues to be. (my daughter passed away three years ago). What to do?? what to do??

sunny, so many churches have diet planning and diet plans/exercise classes for adults. maybe your calling would be to start a healthy learning class for kids? partents could get involved, too. focus on fun, creative things to do. could this be a new ministry that you could head up?

Sunny, are there any clues in his autobiography?
maybe he was seeing the rise in diabetes as something that needed to be addressed in an urgent way and he knew atkins could be (as proven) a very good way to combat the disease?

That's a real good idea--I'll give it some more thought. Thanks!

i finally got some reading done last night. i will readily admit, this is the hardest chapter for me. the subject of diabetes is one that i just can't seem to grasp. i see the numbers, i understand the relationship between overweight and diabetes. the numbers are staggering to me.

many of you, well.... some of you, know of my friend ernest, who has been struggling with being obese and the health problems she's had over the past few years. as i read through this diabetes chapter, i continually think of her. although she is not on atkins, she is on a restricted diet. probably very close to pre maintanance atkins if truth be told.
                she eats.....
                no sugar
                no white flour
brown rice and whole wheat bread and pastas
cheese as well as fruit and plenty of veggies.

as she has been on this restricted diet, she's lost so much weight and her insulin dependency has dropped dramatically. she feels better than she has in 10 years and certainly MUCH better than she's felt in the past 3.

she was being hospitalized a couple times a year with cellulitis (sp?) and doctors urged her to take better care of herself or she would be losing a leg. i thought of the doctors words to her that day in the hospital when i was reading the numbers of amputations due to diabetes.

i'm still working on chapter 24 but hopefully will have read every word of it by days end. perhaps not understanding every word but at least i can say i read it.

Of course I read this chapter already, and I read it again when my Dad (type I) was starting his health decline. He had diabetes fo 55+ years and was always very secretive about it so I never really understood it either.

When I had to step in and take control of his insulin dosages and food intake, this chapter helped me quite alot to really understand the blood sugar swings and the whys of eating low carb.

Now, it all makes perfect sense to me. Even someone who is not genetically predisposed to Diabetes can develop Type II, simply by eating poorly and not losing weight. A Type II is fortunate enough to be able to control the swings with the foods they eat. My father didn't have that luxury as he was completely insulin dependent.

Diabetes is scary, Diabetes can bring on all kinds of other diseases. Eating this WOE keep our blood sugars on an even level, which is the whole point.

I agree, this part is a really difficult part to digest. In the past I've skipped this part because it "doesn't pertain to me', but it pertains to us all.

                  Homework is done!

i hear ya on the "doesn't apply to me" part. i think, way back when, i did the same ... skipped over it. i've read it now at least 3 times and some makes sense as i think of people i know who are diabetic but i haven't had the hands on experience like you did. i am sure that makes things much clearer but what a sad way to learn.

you've got your homework done already!

I skipped over this part too the first time I read the book... then my brother got diagnosed as Type 1, so I went and re-read it. You're both right... it's a tough part of the book to absorb. I read it, take in as much as I can, and then promptly forget the science behind the disease a couple of days later .

finally i got through the diabetic chapter. i know this is useful and something to know but i just have a hard time grasping it. i did take notes, i've underlined and i even have a question that i'll be asking coop (our mod of the diabetic forum)

it's late and i'll post a few things tomorrow.

i've also read about yeast but as i sit here and think about it, i don't remember reading about the spit test. i'm looking that up again and going to the faq forum. maybe i was dazed by the previous chapter and nothing sank in.

My dad had diabetes-type II, but he didn't develop it until he was in his late 70's. He took really good care of himself, but it caused even more heart damage. It's an ugly disease and takes so much away from people. My ex has pretty much uncontrolled diabetes, mainly because he won't eat right.

After learning about the diet my dad was on to control his diabetes, I learned it was pretty darn close to Atkins. If it's good for people who HAVE diabetes, why do some say it's NOT good to PREVENT diabetes?

Diabetes steals so much from people--heart health, vision, even toes, fingers arms and legs. It also causes kidney damage. Fear of it is a major reason I plan on getting to my goal weight and staying there.

While I don't get all the technical stuff the diabetes chapter is one I have read a few times because it's such a prevelent disease in my family. I have two Uncles one on each side with severe diabetes and my dad has been insulin dependant for probably 20 years anyways. I am always looking for information to help him and about 8 years ago when I discovered Atkins for the first time I actualy got my dad to do it with me and he lost a ton of weight and was off almost all his meds except one small pill to control his diabetes. He didn't have to give himself shots for almost two years and then slowly walked away from this WOL and is now completely back to being insulin dependant and I can't for the life of me (or him) get him to get back on the plan. It's sad really. The reading of this section is going slow for me but my plan is to try and get a lot in today and possibly enough to get the homework started.

Jimmie I have learned so much more doing this challenge with everyone ........ more probably from reading comments and absorbing the things that otehr people see that I might have missed. I know more then once I have read a post and thought "Hey wait a minute I didn't read that" and then go back and look and sure enough I did I just didn't absorb it till someone else pointed it out ........... A Huge Huge help this has been! Thank-you!
