Is that a nice way of saying "tyrant"????? LOL I love him anyway!

Finally, I was able to take 1.5 hours for myself to read part 3. This part should be included in the I'm Worth it Challenge. Very enlightening.

Here's what I got out of it:
        1. All overweight people are not simply lazy slobs
        2. I am an emotional eater who needs to put that foremost in my mind when I choose
to eat. I'm going to ask myself "Am I hungry, or do I just want it".
        3. Page 278 - Teach yourself, lecture yourself and habituate yourself - great words to
live by on a daily basis. Positive affirmations and understanding.
        4. Page 281 - in reference to a goal weight and not being a perfect "10" he says:
"But you can make it the best body possible if you don't fall into the trap of
demanding a perfect figure and weight loss schedule that exists only in your head"

By re-reading this chapter it's clear I'm an atkineer for life. Yes I slip on occasion, yes my weight fluctuates, yes I have fat days, yes I am human. By following the Atkins program I know I'm eating healthily and exercising a few times a week as well. These are new habits that have helped me keep my weight off.

        All done with homework too!

I am looking forward to seeing the answers to this week's homework.

Dr. Atkins, himself, hated to exercise, so the earlier books don't mention it very much. He did find a love of tennis and that combined with his walk to and from work each day was his exercise. It still brings tears to my eyes, that his walk to work on an icy morning caused his premature death. He said he couldn't recommend that his patients exercise, if he didn't do it himself.

Page 229 of the 1999 paperback edition states that "if you are going to stay slim and healthy, then a significant increase in the amount of exercise--which I strongly recommend to for everyone--is absolutely essential..."

The list of medications appears on page 233 -234 in chapter 18 of the paperback 1999 edition (in part 4).

Page 260, Chapter 21, which is a whole chapter on exercise, states as the opening sentence: "Since I thrive on controversy, I haven't mentioned exercise." (I think that says a lot about why he doesn't mention exercise much!) The rest of the chapter praises exercise. On page 263, he tells about himself being lazy and about how he found an exercise he likes--tennis.

Page 268, chapter 22, 1999 paperback edition is entitled, "Nutritional Supplements--The Secrets of the Atkins Center" It then goes on for 11 pages all about supplements--more pages than the 2002 edition with virtually the same info. Maybe you just haven't read far enough in the book. In the 1999 edition, this is all in part 4 and there is a part 5 for recipes and menus.

Another reason for the up-dated stuff from 1999 and 2002 was the fact that they were trying to make the 'diet' follow recommendations of the medical community more closely. That and the fact that the low carb products and vitamins and supplements were supporting the whole thing and the Atkins Center, where he saw patients, was losing money. Everyone really needs to read his bio, if you are interested in the whys and hows.

          Sunny!

Thanks, Sunny. I am looking forward to reading part 4. I kind of felt I was missing out on things. I am glad that at least some of the topics discussed in part 3 of 2002 will show up in part 4 of 1999.

Thanks, Sunny. The background on Dr. Atkins is really interesting. I bet after he wrote the 1999 edition he read more and more research pointing to the growing obesity epidemic in this country and decided he had to emphasize the exercise and veggies.

Just finished Chapter 24 The Perilous Path to Diabetes. Everyone should read this chapter to reinforce the importance of this WOE/WOL. What blows my mind is that a majority of the medical profession just doesn't get it...I just can't understand it.

                              Have a great day everyone!
