I am always looking for information to help him and about 8 years ago when I discovered Atkins for the first time I actualy got my dad to do it with me and he lost a ton of weight and was off almost all his meds except one small pill to control his diabetes. He didn't have to give himself shots for almost two years and then slowly walked away from this WOL and is now completely back to being insulin dependant and I can't for the life of me (or him) get him to get back on the plan. It's sad really. The reading of this section is going slow for me but my plan is to try and get a lot in today and possibly enough to get the homework started.
how sad the ending of the story is! i am wondering why your dad, who had such success and was able to get off medication would not want that again for himself?

Jimmie I have learned so much more doing this challenge with everyone ........ more probably from reading comments and absorbing the things that otehr people see that I might have missed. I know more then once I have read a post and thought "Hey wait a minute I didn't read that" and then go back and look and sure enough I did I just didn't absorb it till someone else pointed it out ........... A Huge Huge help this has been! Thank-you!
    you're so very welcome!
i didn't get to looking for the spit test last night. i got interested in something else going on... two somethings.... and then got tired. i'll be off doing some looking in just a few.

After learning about the diet my dad was on to control his diabetes, I learned it was pretty darn close to Atkins. If it's good for people who HAVE diabetes, why do some say it's NOT good to PREVENT diabetes?

Diabetes steals so much from people--heart health, vision, even toes, fingers arms and legs. It also causes kidney damage. Fear of it is a major reason I plan on getting to my goal weight and staying there.

caryl, this is what really sank in and it does each time i read through or try to reference something. it's an ugly disease and is far reaching in the damage that can be done. i wish i could remember the woe that my buddy ernest is doing. it sounds like the same thing your dad is on. as i said before (i think) her diet, which really is her woe now, regardless it not being atkins, is probably very very close to premaintenance/maintenance atkins.

i found this in a post..................

Try this simple test to see if you have a candida yeast infection. First thing in the morning, before you put ANYTHING in your mouth, get a clear glass. Fill with water and work up a bit of saliva, then spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour. If you have a yeast infection, you will see strings (like legs) traveling down into the water from the saliva floating on the top, or "cloudy" saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water.

If there are no stings and the saliva is still floating after at least one hour, you are probably yeast infection free.*****could then be used to maintain good bowel flora and proper pH, and prevent a yeast infection from coming back as we are always exposed to things that may cause it to come back.

Most people fail the test. I have heard that over 80% of the population has candida yeast infections.

I never read it until my best friend (who lives in Canada) was nearly being killed by the well-meaning people at the hospital with their nutritional advice that they get straight from the Canadian version of the American Diabetic Association. He was being encouraged to go fat free, eat no sugar, but encouraged to have 5 slices of bread a day (didn't mention whole grain--white was fine) cereal and skim milk for breakfast, and lots of potatoes, as long as he didn't put 'margarine' or salt on them. Lots of fruit, especially bananas and orange juice. Orange juice every day and lots of skim milk. He was way past overweight and he was hospitalized many times in danger of losing his toes, feet or legs.

I read all about it in DANDER at that point, and did get him to make some concessions such as whole wheat bread and only two slices per day. I got him to add back some fat and ditch the margarine. I convinced him to only eat bananas once in a while, instead of several per day. And, no more orange juice. He had to go to the hospital to the diabetic clinic to learn how to eat, so the National health insurance would pay for his supplies and medication. He lost 25 pounds and didn't really need the meds any longer, but when I went with him to a doctor's visit, they were very excited with his blood work and weight loss, but told him that what I was telling him was all wrong. Told him he needed to be eating the way he was taught--regardless that he no longer needed his limbs amputated! Makes you want to scream! Luckily, he felt so much better, he kept doing it the right way and just attended classes and kept shut about what he really eats.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Don't you often wonder what is wrong with the health care professionals??? I ask myself this daily & I work as a nurse in a hospital. Sometimes I just want to walk up to some of these doctors & smack them in the head like the V8 commercial. Except I would say....Duh you could have gone with the low carb WOE!!!

Yikes! It's not even morning and that made me want to heave just to read it! :shivers: I'm a real wuss about body fluids, including mine.

I never drink after anyone, even my kids and when I was married, not after my husband (yes, I did kiss him: not the same!). Once, when my son was a baby, one of my brothers who hadn't had any kids of his own at that time, was holding my son , who was gumming a cracker, as my brother was drinking a glass of iced tea. He kept letting my slobbering child have drinks from his glass, then he would drink from it! Yuck! I had to head to the bathroom and throw up. And it was MY kid!

as per the yeast test (yep, pretty gross)

i did the test back when i first came on the board. i failed it then as i am sure i would fail it now. (sunny, yes it was gross) but, i lost weight fairly easily so i never gave it a second thought to do the yeast diet.

sunny, to read your story about your friend and the woe is pretty proof positive of how things can change a persons health. i think i'd be looking for a new doctors if possible. my buddy is a retired military wife so she's kinda dialed in on who she can see. thankfully they put her on a woe that works

That's the sad part. Not a chance of changing doctors. You have to go to who you are assigned to in Canada. Worse, he lives on Vancouver Island, where the doctors are few and far between. He has the same incurable disorder that I have (RSD) and he has to travel several hours to Victoria or do a long ferry ride and go to the mainland to Vancouver to be treated for RSD. Sometimes, he has to wait 18 months for an appointment. I can call UVA and get seen and treated in the same day with the same symptoms. Oh, well, another subject, altogether.

The diet my dad was on was based on the glycemic index--you basically didn't eat foods (or at least not very often) that make your blood sugar spike. Therefore, minimal fruits, (unless the blood sugar drops too much) easy on the bread, and they encouraged whole wheat, and lots of veggies (non starchy) and enough protein. And of course--stay away from sugar. I think the diet encouraged lower fat than Atkins, but it was actually pretty close to pre-maintenance.

It's hard to believe the Canadian doctors encouraged drinking orange juice! My dad was only ever supposed to drink that if his blood sugar totally tanked.

After my dad's dealings with doctors, I must admit I don't have a ton of faith in them. I believe in researching on my own and not just taking their advice as wisdom from God. Doctors are definitely subject to making mistakes and half of them graduated in the bottom halves of their classes.

i'm going to at least state some of the things i've underlined along the journey so far. i've just not had time but need to do this.

chapter 24 better known as the diabetic chapter

dr. a mentions again how our diets have decreased in fats, increased in unrefined carbs which includes white flour and sugar. he mentions this throughout the book and once again, if you see something over and over, it is a point the author is trying to pound into us.
added note: you do realize that white flour has been bleached and bleach is a toxin, right? right along with those white paper coffee filters we use.

do you remember reading that "by the year 2025 our planet is likely to have 300.000,000 diabetic residents."

i liked his statement in The Answer, page 315. the key to unlocking the solution is acknowledgment and implementation. man, just use this for every part of our woe, from induction to maintaining. we know it and now we have to implement it. if we don't do step two, implementation, don't go crying because he's already told us that won't burn enough fat to make any difference. i have so many red marks on page 315. it's comparable to the red letter edition of the Bible.

as per the last little bit of conversation about people we know that have reduced their insulin intake and are losing weight, i found it to be a great
example that the patient, janet drake (page 326 and following) had such a remarkable turn around. i've noted paragraph 2 on page 327 which starts out
"I started doing Atkins that day at lunch ."......
in three weeks ..... JUST 3 WEEKS.... this janet made a life changing, a life
                              saving, move!

                              yeast reactions....
what can i say? i thought i would the spit test today but the yucky thoughts of yesterday in this thread came to mind and i got a pint of water instead.
i do however have some of the yeast symptoms, but, nowhere near even half.
sugar pops up again as being the worst offender when it comes to yeast. anybody getting the idea yet, that we should be staying far far away from sugar????

                              food intolerances.....
i have the words "Everyone is different" underlined. i wish we could really get this to sink in. we are like aunt suzzzzy or our sister skinnyshins. we are all different. i sit and watch jack eat his snacks at night and wonder how much fat i'd put on in just one week if i ate like him. i'd be big as a barn in no time. why? because i ain't him.... we're DIFFERENT! i'd be so bloated and be retaining enough water to float a boat. jack appears to not have many food tolerances.

i started wondering as i was reading this chapter just how many kids are on ritalin or like drugs. i know down home, they seemed to prescribe that to kids like it was gummy bears or soemthing. i have no doubt that probably 1 out of 3 kids was on ritilin in the grade school. now i'm wondering just how many of those kids are being blitzed out becuase of food allergies.

that takes me to chapter 27, protection of my heart. i'm part way through and will try my best to get it done today.

Well knowing that most of us have a food addiction of one kind or another it seems like with all addictions acknowledgement is the first step to getting past it huh????? Even with Atkins it comes up again and again .......... Acknowledge you have a problem and them implement the steps to resolve it ....... we know the steps ......... it's all laid out for us so now we just have to keep on doing what we know!!!!!
