  • Re: 2007 Read The Book Challenge

Well, I finished Part II and did my homework today!

For me, this part is about changing our lives for the better. Time and again we read about how it's the sugar/carbs that harms our health. We know this stuff in our heads, and yet it's a completely different thing to practice not eatting it in real life.

It's about finding out what our triggers are and learning new ways to deal with them. It's about enjoying life and food, even at restaurants or at friend's homes. It's really about understanding this WOE, instead of falling prey to all of the myths out there.

I hope everyone in this group read pages 215/216 about why we need to move past induction sooner rather than later. I'm a guilty party who stayed in induction far too long. If I only knew then what I do know now, right?

Personally, I'm very proud to be eating this WOE. I feel good, I think I look pretty good too!

yes, you look pretty good to us too! i've got you all smileyfaced in!

i agree with all of that, silly. i didn't like induction so i had no problem moving up right quickly. i wanted more variety and was willing to slow my loss. now had i needed to lose 100 pounds???? things may have been different.

as i've read through chapter 16 now, i started thinking that Atkins might be more of a get healthy plan and the bi-product, the bonus was we get to lose weight, too. the best of both worlds.

there's so much to digest in these chapters. i reread about plateaus at least twice. this is something i wish everyone would realize. plateaus and/or stalls, is not a 2 week thing. we have all read this or something along these lines " I haven't lost any weight for 1 1/2 weeks. I guess I'm stalled out. Back to Induction". this is not what the book teaches. plateaus are AT LEAST 4 WEEKS of not losing inches OR pounds.

there are so many things i underlined again. i might as well just underline every sentence.

I'm good with the reading too. Still got the homework to do though. Part two seemed to whizz by!

This time, I paid more attention to the sidebars (also in Part One). These tend to irritate me (in any book/article) as I feel like they're taking me away from the "main" theme and forcing me to read something I don't want to read at that particular time.

One that jumped out at me was the one about the uses and abuses of induction... how one can go back to induction from time to time after a small gain, but that it shouldn't be used repeatedly or regularly as a "bad habit" lest ones metabolism suffers.
I find that advice easy to follow as I never want to do induction again!!! Once was enough.

I've read through Chapter 13. I got to thinking, at one point 2big4mysize said the Atkins group had moved spinach to the list of salad vegetables. So I went to their web site to see if I could find an updated induction list. I found a sample 2 week menu that included: day 1 bran crisp bread of Wasa high fiber flat bread; day 3 unprocessed bran flakes with 1C Hood Countdown milk; day 4 Wasa Rye Flat bread. WHAT's UP WITH THIS????

Hmmm, I just looked too and it is odd. it goes against everything they say in the induction rules. Thanks for pointing it out, I hope someone else can answer this because it baffles me!

              jimmie, any clue?

my first guess at this, and i'll be truthful, it is only a guess, is that site is using the latest updated version on the Atkins diet. i don't have that version so i am not sure if that's it or not. the net carbs are over 20 in many cases.
since i'm only guessing, i will give a shout out and see if i can't get the scoop on what the real deal is.

It seems to me like the suggested diets they put often contradict what the actual book says ........... it doesn't make a lot of sense to me either.

I had to read the plateau section twice over to pound it into my head ......... I am one of the guilty ones who if I go even 3-4 days with out some kind of movement on the scale even an ounce or two I go bonkers ....... the last time I was 14 days with no movement and I was going crazy and yep went right back to a stricter induction. It's hard because it works .......... since stepping back and paying closer attention and focusing on my water I ahve dropped three pounds ........ now maybe those pounds would have come off either way ........ hmmmmmmmm so hard to do it 100% right isn't it??? I guess thats the goal and the learning process is that yes we will make mistakes but try learning more and more as we go to get closer to "right"

Oh BTW I finished the reading part but now have to do the homework finding the answers makes we rescan everything too so it's a good thing

i've had a second thought that maybe just maybe they confused the induction menu with something else???

if you look directly at the Rules Of Induction on that site, you'll plainly see 20 net grams of carbs are allowed on induction but by the menu you see that is clearly not what they adhered to.

this is the exact copy of what is posted on the site.

Eat either three regular-size meals a day or four or five smaller meals. Do not skip meals or go more than six waking hours without eating.
                    1. Eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein in the form of poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs and red meat, as well as pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold-pressed).
                    2. Eatno more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, at least 12 – 15 grams of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. (see Acceptable Foods).
                    3. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time. If you feel you must eat bread or some other grain product, only high fiber low-carb products with 3 net carbs or less per serving are allowed, and you can eat only one serving a day. Be aware that even that amount may slow or stall your progress, and if that happens, drop the product immediately.
                    4. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.
                    5. Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When you're hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. When you're not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements.
                    6. Don't assume any food is low in carbohydrate—instead, read labels. Check the carb count (it's on every package) or use a carbohydrate gram counter. Be aware that the law allows manufacturers to round off if a product has fewer than 0.5 grams of any carbohydrate, so that will show up as zero. The only way to detect some fractional carbs is to look for them in the ingredients list, where they must be listed if they’re added to a product, regardless of the amount.
                    7. Eat out as often as you wish but be on guard for hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings. Gravy is often made with flour or cornstarch, and sugar is sometimes an ingredient in salad dressing.
                    8. Use sucralose or saccharin as a sweetener. Be sure to count each packet of any of these as 1 gram of carbs, because of the fillers and bulking agents which are added.
                    9. Avoid too much coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar.
                    10. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day in addition to anything else you may drink, to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat.
                    11. If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables.
                    12. At a minimum, take a good daily multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and calcium, but without iron

i'm like sally, i hate induction and would do almost anything to not go back to it. i did go back to rung one about 2 1/2 months ago, got into ketosis and swiftly moved up the rungs. the rest of that story and what i've been doing will be told very soon.

asked and aswered. thank you megs.
using a different upadated version is in part, right. here's the scoop.....

Spinach, tomatoes and cabbage were moved to the Salad list in a Atkins publication after Dr. A died. I think it was an Atkins cookbook or Atkins Essentials. Anyhow, I could see their point about spinach and the cabbage, but the tomatoes... no way. 3 cups of tomatoes is something like 20 net carbs.

In Atkins Essentials, I remember they changed the Induction rules to promote Atkins products, so the Induction rule that said no bread, turned into no regular bread. And I think they loosened up the rules to make Atkins more "user friendly" for folks who "have to have" ice cream, bread, pasta, etc.

....................I guess the best thing to tell anyone wondering about this is that we go by the 2002 edition of the book and diet---the one that was published when Dr. Atkins was still alive.

I'd be interested in other peoples experiences with determining their CCLL. The first time around, I got all messed up with adding new foods and adding more carbs and how to sort out which was causing weight gain. I just decided to focus on adding new foods and keep my carb level around 30. It worked, and I lost weight but I never did determine my CCLL.

Thank you Jimmie and Megs for the information. I've been worrying about it all morning! That was a very big contradiction to our 2002 versions! No wonder people get confused at times.

IMHO and I do mean humble, that's Corporate America for you! It makes me want to stick to the 2002 version just because it doesn't tout any products and is 100% about whole, fresh foods. And the sentimental one in me likes this one because Dr. Atkins wrote it.
