Well, it certainly makes sense why people would get constipated on induction if they count fiber as part of the 20 grams.
understood and point taken.
i look at this way.... i get to eat more if i take the fiber out.
silly, correct me if i'm wrong but once upon a time, did you not deduct the fiber and now you do? maybe it wasn't you. seems like i'm remembering something from the first veggie challenge

Jimmy, did you get me checked off for part 2 done? I'm gonna start part 3 in a few minutes. The lengthy part 2 came right when life got even more complicated and it was hard to get it all done. I had to read too fast, the times I had a chance to read, so I will go back and review part 2 again. The old brain just doesn't retain like it used to. This challenge is really helping!
Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I may be wrong, but didn't some of the oldest editions not require 3 cups of salad veggies as part of induction? That might explain why they didn't worry about distinguishing fiber carbs. Let me say, I'm only talking about fiber here. Sugar alcohols are a whole 'nother animal, and even though the 2002 book says they are OK on induction, I would advise anyone to go by Rule #5 - "Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable foods list."

brandy, i'm not sure, as my memory for some things isn't as good as it use to be but what i can remember from 1975 was 20 grams of carbs on induction, eat nothing that is not on the list (those two things for sure) and if memory serves me, the two different lists of veggies where there. i seem to be thinking that the rules of induction were very much the same if not identical, except for the subtraction of the of the fiber.
i'm glad you mentioned about sugar alcohols. mostly where i have found them was in ice cream, candy and that sort of thing. nothing that is induction friendly.

Part two homework is complete and will start part 3 tomorrow. My father in law goes in to surgery tomorrow (bad timing, right before the holiday!), so I'll have plenty of time to read while we wait. Sorry I have not been as active as I normally am. It's been one of those months! Hope everyone has been doing well!

On page 95 of the 1999 edition "The Rules of the Induction Diet:
1) Your diet must contain no more than 20 gms of carbohydrate a day. For most people, induction of ketosis/lipolysis can be achieved on this intake. This allows for approximately 3 cups of salad vegetables (loosely packed) or 2 cups of salad plus 2/3 cup of cooked vegetables in the below-10%-carbohydrate category."
Further down the page is rule number 5:
"5) Using a carbohydrate gram counter, one could find other combinations totaling less than 20 gms of carbohydrate. One would be using foods like nuts, seeds, olives, avocados, cheeses, cream and sour cream, lemon, and lime juices, and Atkins low-carbohydrate diet foods such as the Shake Mix, Bake Mix, and Advantage Bars. Don't assume these foods are low, unless you absolutely know the carbohydrate content of the portion you are eating..."
Doesn't that sound like you can have things not on the induction list, like nuts, so long as you keep below 20 grams?
Sometimes this is confusing. The answer is what Brandywine says, "Eat nothing that's not on the acceptable food list during induction". Other than the seeds/nuts, the rest is allowed on induction in very limited quantities. He also states "be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people".
As far as the shakes bars etc goes. They are loaded with hidden things like sugar alcohols. Although sugar alcohols are "allowed", in reality they do act exactly like sugar in your body so the net carb thing is only fooling you. If a bar says 2 net carbs with 18 total carbs, you are eating every single one of those 18 carbs. Keep in mind Atkins is a corporation that sells food products.
The point is to rid your body of even wanting things like shakes and bars. They should be used only in a real emergency.
These descrepancies in the books are really good to discuss. This is why we use the 2002 edition on ADBB. It is the most true, accurate and concise version of Dr. Atkins' plan.
It's funny I though reading the book together would make things clearer for me and in some instances it's just more confusing! LOL I'm so glad some of you have it all figured out to rescue me when I have a part I just don't get .......
I started reading part 3 this morning I thik I only got about 5 pages read but I'm working on it.

I agree, Elffriend. In the 2002 edition, Rule #3 states: "Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which MUST (my emphasis) come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables."
In the 1999 edition, the veggies seem to be a suggestion.

I thought the same thing last Monday when my brother had brain surgery, but I never got a word read. There were too many of us and we were too scared. I was at the hospital for 15 hours, and not one word read! Hope it goes better for you! I'll say a prayer for your F-I-L and your family.
