  • Mid-Year Resolution Challenge, December 3-10

    Atkins is not a 'diet'.

This, my friends, is a way of life.

I keep reading that people need motivation to keep going on this diet. That this diet is a means to an end, and not the end itself. Dieticians refer to this as a diet.

I hate to say it, but a way of eating is a way of eating for life.

You don't stop breathing air when you decide you don't feel motivated; neither can you stop eating. Still, what you put into your body not only regulates how you feel, but it also affects your body's functions.

You slow down with the weight loss and it bothers you. That's ok. This way of eating is for life! You have another 50+ years to live. What's 2 years losing the weight? Maintenance is the rest of your life.

You want to lose 30 pounds by this date or you'll just give up. Give up what? Feeling good? Having a lower blood pressure? Being off of your acid reflux medications? Being able to manage your cholestrol?

Come on. You have wonky blood sugar and you were not meant to conume in excess of 200 pounds of sugar annually. Admit it. You crave food when you eat a substantial amount (or maybe even a small amount) of carbohydrates. This isn't psychological. This is physiological. Physically, your blood sugar spikes and plummets like the tides. It happened 10 years ago. It's happening now. 20 years from now it'll still be happening.

You don't stop treating an illness or an ailment. Your blood sugar is in need of constant treatment. This way of eating is that treatment.

You feel better. You sleep better. Your doctor scratches his head, but he knows this is working for you.

    Why would you quit that?

    This is not a diet.

If you want a crash diet, there are easier ways to go about losing weight than eating healthfully and being full. This is a way you eat for life. Dr Atkins lived this way of eating. Many of us live this way of eating. It's a way of eating. It's something you will carry on for life because it works.

If you stop a way of life... what then? You get what you always got. Why not strive to make these changes for life? A bus is something you get on and off of. Cutting out processed foods and sugars is natural. It's only natural. And we're all about doing this for life. We want you around for a long time.

Make the effort and you'll be rewarded for it. Hop on and off, and you're on the fast-track transit lane to yo-yo obesity, doctor visits, and bad expando pants.

Let's pull together and make this a great week!

Re: Mid-Year Resolution Challenge, December 3-10

I very much agree Ms. Cleo that this is not a diet. It's a definitely a way of life. There are stumbles and falls, but you don't give up,you just get ride back and continue going on you journey. It'll be 5months on December 23rd since I changed my horrible way of eating to this wonderful WOE,and I can honestly say that even if I stumble and fall,I will never go back to it.Why would I when mathematically calculated,I have technically lost 6pounds a month for the past four months?I have never been able to be that consistant before!!!!!!Thank you for that inspiring post!

I did very well this week.211/203/196.I started out at 211,and after 7days induction I'm at 203,and 196 is where I want to be at becuase that was the weight when I fell off the wagon. Not bad at all.If my weight loss was consistant I would be 187 come New Years. That would be wonderful, but again,I am not putting any set dates on my weight loss.Nice and slow is fine and dandy with me.I hope everyone else did equally well this week.
I CAN RESIST EVERYTHING AND TEMPTATION.

Re: Mid-Year Resolution Challenge, December 3-10

I think that a lot of times diet is said out of habit. But even when I say diet instead of WOE or WOL I still have full intentions of eating this way forever. And even though I intend to eat this way forever I still need motivation. I even posted a thread asking others what helped them stay motivated. During that time I was just feeling BLAH...bored...and not into putting the effort into this WOE. That being said I did not cheat. I was losing steadily.

But sometimes it does just get tiring and seems so much more easier to eat like the rest of society...family...co-workers...friends. Do the health benefits far out weigh how we feel if we eat off plan...you bet your sweet patootie. But that doesn't mean that it ain't work to stick to plan and to choose wisely everyday. Because it is work...it isn't all easy breezy.

So...yep..sometimes I need external motivation...if I didn't I wouldn't be on this wonderful support group. But it doesn't mean I think of this as a diet with a beginning and an end. In fact...part of me thinks the losing weight is going to be more easier than the maintaining. After all...thousands of us lose weight everyday. But many of us don't keep it off. When we get to goal then we don't get the satisfaction of posting pounds lost or inches lost or fitting into a new size...we maintain. A victory to be sure. The main battle to be won. Maybe eventually we can all reach a place where it is not a struggle to be different and we have no need of motivation. We can hope!! JMO

Just checking in -- still stuck at this weight! I'm ok with that tho, because I'm seeing major changes in my body from all the exercise I'm doing. I have visible abs (!!!) and muscle-y arms! WOW!

Tonibaby...same thing I said to Kinkay...don't forget us and please continue to post and let us know how it is going. A short email is better than none at all. I know you both will do great!!

lots2lose...good to hear all is well there. Looking forward to changing your stats!

rybread...great attitude! Congrats on the abs and muscle-ly stuff!! Time for an updated picture??? If your weight has not changed with the added exercise remember that you have lost fat and gained muscle and that muscle weighs more. So now that you are getting so near your goal it is more about how your body looks and the clothes fit and how you feel rather than a certain number on the scale!

                  Be a great day everyone!!!

You're definitely right, Elsie. As I get closer to goal, I'm finding myself more concerned with my body fat percentage than I am with my weight!

Being in the 190's I am living vicariously through you this week...LOL! I won't hit that until sometime in Janurary. Keep up the good work! Sweat Sweat Sweat!

Well Ladies...I am really struggling this week for some reason. I am very hungry even though I am drinking my water and following the plan. I ate so much yesterday that I woke up with acid reflux during the night! I have been consuming lots of calories for several days now so I know it is not that I am not eating enough. Yesterday I even had popcorn which though I am allowed it because of the rung I am on it was more than 5 carbs worth. Other than that I am eating legal foods...but not feeling satisfied...too many calories and yesterday way to many carbs. SIGH!!!
I am feeling the same way today.

Hope everyone else is doing WAY better!!!
