  • Re: JANUARY Weigh?? No WAY!! Challenge!!!

It's a combination of nerves and worrying about being disappointed...Any loss is good, but what if it's only 3 pounds or something? My boyfriend keeps saying, oh I've lost at least 10, but we both know how deceiving my body can be. There have been weeks where I feel like I've lost 4 or 5 pounds, and then lost like, 1.

I guess as long as you've done your best then that's it - if it's only a 1lb then it's still a lb, better than a gain, or a stall.

I've been reading the loser lounge stories again and thinking I need to stop wanting instant amazing loss now. I tend to get disgruntled and then cheat. If it take another year, then it does, sort of thing. Sorry I sound like I'm being preachy, I'm not meaning to - I just am trying to get a new angle on it myself.

Also, I really think from things you've said that it will be more than 3lbs. What is you previous monthly average?

I started weighing regularly in October. During October I lost like, 14lb. (re-did a clean induction, and I lost 7lb in one week!), November I lost 10lb., December I lost 5lb. (gained muscle lost lots of inches), and this month I feel like it was another "October" and I noticed a big difference in my clothing, and I can wear smaller stuff now.

I think it will be quite a bit then! Particularly if it feels like another october for you. I always know when I've gained/lost just from how I feel.

I'm more excited about how much you've lost than how much I have! I've kind of given Jan up.

              January 27, 2007: DAY 27

Here's your SCALE SCOFF for the day, 1/27/07:

Teen girls should scale back their weigh-ins

Frequent scale-steppers gain more weight, become unhealthy dieters

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Teen girls who frequently weighed themselves were more likely than others to resort to unhealthy dieting measures, and some ended up gaining close to twice as much weight, a study of Minnesota students found. The most scale-obsessed girls in the University of Minnesota research were more likely to skip meals, use diet pills or laxatives, smoke, and binge and vomit to lose weight.

"The act of getting on the scale, weighing yourself every day, can lead to an unhealthy weight preoccupation," said lead researcher Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, a professor at the university's School of Public Health. "And teenage girls who are concerned about their weight are at great risk for unhealthy weight control behaviors."

The study — published in this month's issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health — surveyed 2,516 Minnesota junior high and high school girls and boys in the 1998-1999 school year and followed up in 2003-2004.

Close to 10 percent of the girls said at the beginning of the study that they strongly agreed with the statement, "I weigh myself often."

When questioned in the follow-up, 92 percent of those girls said they engaged in some kind of unhealthy weight-control behavior, compared to about 68 percent of girls who strongly disagreed that they weighed themselves frequently.

Unhealthy weight-control behavior could be as minor as skipping an occasional meal. Thirty-eight percent of girls who frequently weighed themselves reported engaging in extreme weight-loss behavior, a higher percentage than for girls who did not weigh themselves often but not enough to be considered statistically significant.

Neumark-Sztainer said the results probably reflect the girls' underlying concern with weight, but even when they adjusted the results for body satisfaction, they still showed a link between frequent weighing and bad eating behavior.

The junior high girls who reported weighing themselves frequently gained an average of 33.3 pounds over five years, compared with just 18.6 pounds for girls their age who didn't weigh in frequently. There was no statistically significant weight difference among girls who were in high school when they were first surveyed.

The findings were adjusted for race, socio-economic status, weight, body mass index, age and poor body image.

For boys, frequent weigh-ins didn't lead to weight gain, the study found. Boys who weighed themselves often were more likely than other boys to take unhealthy measures to control their weight, but the difference was too small to be considered statistically significant.

Only 5 more days! Is anyone else getting nervous? I'm afraid to see what the scale will say. I'm worried I'll be disappointed, or worse yet, horrified.

That's an interesting article - I'm not surprised that the link is there.

No weighing here, though very tempted today because I felt I was looking better in the mirror. I'm got to wait until the 5th of feb because of the Board Challenge and then I'm away! But I can handle a few more days, I hope.

I REALLY want to be under 13 stone (182lbs) because it would be an amazing milestone for me. Other than that, I'm not too fussed.

I can't wait to hear how you've all done

Hi All! Sorry about no SCALE SCOFF stuff yesterday and today--out of town yesterday, and BUSY this morning!

I was nervous last week, and now I'm getting excited! My pants are looser this week than they were only 7 days ago! Geoff is somehow thinking I've lost 13 or 14lb. but we shall see. I wouldn't be surprised if I've gained muscle and the scale will be evil to me.

                      TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY!

We've done it! We stayed off that monstrous scale for a LONG TIME. For some of us, it's the longest we've ever been off the scale during Atkins. I'm proud of everyone. This is no small feat--you must have confidence that what you're doing is working, dedication to the plan, and strength to stay away from the scale.

                      GREAT JOB ALL!

Tomorrow, report in with the results of our challenge. I'm expecting to see great numbers from everyone!

I seriously can't believe I've made it a month. I think this is the longest I've ever gone not stepping on a scale in my adult life, let alone on Atkins!

Unfortunately, I'm with Baarb, and I, too, must wait until the end of the board-wide no weigh challenge. But, I will do my measurements in the morning and report here. Can't wait to hear everyone's GREAT news!
