Re: No joke - april water challenge
Hey everyone, I found this on one of the other threads , info on on H2O, and why we need it so much and how it helps, this was a great informative piece. Very educational. I thought this was a great read for all us on this Challenge. I have learned some New things from this board. Questions that made me find out more info...Thank you. I stand corrected.

Drinking too much coffee, tea, and sodas containing caffeine makes the body lose water. To avoid being dehydrated, the answer is simple: drink water!
Water is pure liquid refreshment and makes up almost two-thirds of our bodies. An average 150-pound adult body contains 40 to 50 quarts of water, in the following amounts:- Blood is 83 percent water.
- Muscles are 75 percent water.
- The brain is 74 percent water.
- Bones are 22 percent water.
Water is necessary for digesting food and absorbing vitamins and nutrients. It also detoxifies the liver and kidneys and carries away waste from the body. When it comes to digestion, it's just not happening without water. Fiber alone cannot aid proper digestive function. In fact, without water as its partner, good fiber goes bad, causing constipation and extreme discomfort.
If you're dehydrated, your blood thickens, and your heart has to pump much harder to circulate it. As a result, the brain becomes less active, it's hard to concentrate and your body feels fatigued.
Pure, contaminent-free water is truly a "wonder," and eight glasses a day will:- Improve your energy.
- Increase your mental and physical performance.
- Remove toxins and waste products from your body.
- Keep skin healthy and glowing.
- Help you lose weight.
- Reduce headaches and dizziness.
- Allow for proper digestion.
- Help to maintain pH Alkaline balance.
Can Water Protect Against Heart Attacks?
A six-year “American Journal of Epidemiology” study of over 20,000 healthy men and women aged 38 to 100 found that women who drank more than five glasses of water a day were 41 percent less likely to die from a heart attack than those who drank less than two glasses. The protective effect of water was even greater in the men studied.
Should Drinking Water Be Part of a Diet Plan?
Water is a natural appetite suppressant, so developing a good water drinking habit can be a long-term aid in achieving and maintaining an ideal weight. According to F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., author of "Your Body's Many Cries For Water," most times hunger is a signal from your body asking for water, not food.
It's also important to remember that when the body is dehydrated, fat cells get "rubbery" and cannot be easily metabolized. This means that it's harder to lose weight when you don't drink enough water.
Can Everybody Benefit From Drinking Water?
Water is especially important for pregnant women and nursing mothers. For athletes and those who work out regularly, drinking water reduces cardiovascular stress and improves performance. And, since water reduces body temperature, it makes the whole exercise process safer and more effective.
Water is also an important "healing tool" for people with a history of kidney stones. Since water dissolves calcium in the urine, downing at least eight glasses daily reduces the risk of stone formation. Drinking water is also valuable in preventing urinary tract infections in both men and women, as it flushes impurities out of the body.
Even mild dehydration makes you more susceptible to viruses. Water can be a powerful weapon in the war on colds and other illnesses.
When your body is hydrated, drainage from allergies and colds doesn't stick and collect in your throat and lungs, and your cough is more "productive." Even cold sores that appear on the lips are minimized by drinking water because those eruptions tend to favor dry areas on the body.
Getting Started on a Healthy “Drinking” Habit:- You are naturally thirsty (dehydrated) in the morning, so get a “leg up” by drinking your first glass of water as soon as you get up to help flush out the toxins your body has been processing all night.
- If you are cold, drink warm water instead of dehydrating coffee or tea. (Adding a little lemon to the water will give you an extra bit of Vitamin C, too!)
- Set a timer to remind yourself to establish a habit of drinking water, and keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Since you are already dehydrated if you feel thirsty, it’s important to drink water before you're thirsty.

Re: No joke - april water challenge
Lacy, when you add those tea leave or that Kool Aid to your water, do you still call it water? Of course not! You call it Kool Aid or tea. Therefore your point that "water is water is water" is true...if it is water. If it is water with Kool Aid or tea in it, then it is Kool Aid or tea.
The coffee and tea examples are perfect to demonstrate this! They are both diuretics, so therefore you might drink a 10 oz mug of "water" aka coffee, but your body recognizes the diuretic and excretes it so you don't benefit from all 10 oz. I believe this board is dedicated to purely water. No doctor is going to tell you that water is anything but water, whereas with coffee, tea and drink mixes they can't positively tell you exactly how much benefit x amount of said drink will be to you.

Re: No joke - april water challenge
Not to be argumentative, but this is obviously a topic that has come up in other discussions.. and Is a valid topic among many. this is just a little piece I found.. that i decided to share with all of you...Again, I mean no disrespect, Imagood1. but here it is.
"I don't know why some people even bother to answer these questions because they have no clue. The person above me who says it does count is right on the money. Your body cannot tell if your drinking water mixed with sugar free kool aid. It is just water to the body. Many doctors even consider the juices in fruits you eat to count towards your daily intake so certainly water based drinks to include tea, coffee, diet soda etc etc are 99% water. The only negative to tea and coffee is caffiene can be a diuretic, which causes your body to excrete or void water. But if your drinking it constantly throughout the day, its not a factor. Source(s):
I find the logic of some of the answers ... shaky. For example, if I consumed a piece of chocolate, then drank 8 ounces of water would the 8 ounces of water count towards my 64 per day? Yes? If I chewed on tea leaves, then consumed 8 ounces of water, would the 8 ounces count towards my 64? yes? So explain how mixing tea in water somehow makes it NOT water? Explain how having sugar free kool-aid in water is different than just drinking water with food in your stomach. You really think thats logical? Of course not, water is water is water."

Lacey - I have never been on a diet where anything other than pure water counted toward your "water intake" for the day. Your pure water can be bottled, filtered, mineral or spring water but it is pure water - nothing added. The rules of Atkins state (opage 124 of DANDR at the top of the page):
11. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat.
If the sugarfree packet has nothing to add to your water why add it to begin with?
