And Diet Rite?? I think that's something that can only be found in the U.S. I haven't seen it here. I don't drink much pop (that's soda to you Americans - lol) but sometimes a tall glass of something other than water over ice would be a nice change. We get commercials for it here, but I don't think we can get it. I may have to make a run over to Buffalo or something.

LOL, we call our northerner's snow birds as well, besides, I'm from a town really close to your borders. Actually here they call it soft drinks or coke. They don't call it pop around here--they have no idea what you're talking about unless you call it 'soda-pop" then they get it! If you order a soda, you will get "soda water" or seltzer water!

the home of an old sweetie (goodie) maker, Rowntrees (Joseph Rowntree and Co Ltd, a quaker foundation)

A few years ago they were bought out by those French upstarts Nestle (with accent). When I was a boy only Condensed Milk was found in the shops sold by Ness-ells, and the chocholate vending machine on the railway stations sold horrible chocholate by Ness-ells.

When Nestle bought out Rowntree they promised the brand name and the product range would survive, but they have progressivlely removed the Rowtree name and replaced it with "Nestle" (with accent) and have insisted on the FRENCH pronunciation. This Engliahman has views about that.

Sadly it seems that the Rowntree name is now only retained on the fruit and gum based confectionary - anything chocholate bears the name Nestle (with accent) which I will subbornly continue to call Ness-ells.

What about Dairy Tray? Was that Rowntree? Maybe that was Cadbury. mmmmmm, Cadbury. Okay, now, don't get me started here.

They look like what we call 'lovehearts' which are the same shape but have words in raised letters on them. They are a slightly sharp flavoured sweet and if you bite them they turn into a mouthful of powder - quite a refreshing taste. They come in a wrapped plastic roll.

Licensed to sell alcohol to be consumed off the premises only - a takeaway booze shop. Pubs and restaurants are licensed to sell alcohol to be consumed on the premises.

Wash up = Wash your hands

Braces = Suspenders

'Wash up' in English means doing the washing up (plates and cutlery etc) as in the often used phrase after a family celebration - in our house at least -
"I'll wash up if someone else will dry"

'Suspenders' are those clips that hold nylon stockings up - as in the film 'Cabaret'. Also used around the lower leg to hold old fashioned men's socks up in old black and white British comedy films or Whitehall farces.

BTW 'Pants' means underpants here - which is why when we hear 'He wore just pants and suspenders' it brings an unsettling image to most British imaginations!!
