Re: Are we becoming too politically correct about the holidays? Not PC enough?

Anybody watch My Name is Earl? I didn't think I'd like it but it's very funny. Anyway, here's a conversation that took place the other night.

    Man: Feliz naviblab

Hispanic maid: That doesn't mean anything!

Man: Maybe not to you but that's American for Merry Christmas in Mexican.

Maybe that has nothing to do with the discussion here. Or maybe it has everything to do with it. Hmmmmm.

lol Maybe Mog. Or maybe I didn't quote it just right. The point is, his wish was heartfelt even though he and the hispanic girl didn't know what the heck he was actually saying. So my point is...happy holidays or feliz naviblab - the subtext is "go in peace my friend and have a safe and happy time". Tthe words don't matter if the sincerity is there.

Well then, feliz naviblab (or was it nabiblab?) to you Cleo.

I've never seen The Office. Just the one I work in. People don't throw stuff. Although they'd like to.

Ah I see, its like when we moved to france and my sister was about 8 yrs old, mom bought her a doll at the store and when the clerk handed it to her she said in her very best French "Merci go Poo!"

ROTFLMAO, and she was sooo proud of herself for saying thank you in french!

Re: Are we becoming too politically correct about the holidays? Not PC enough?

You know there really isn't a war against Christmas, no jihad against Christians, nothing going on with anyone except a bunch of folks who are using this holiday tree business to fundraise more money to fight off the "liberal left, the athiests, the ACLU, etc, etc.

How the season of ho-ho-ho evolved into Friend or Foe shows how the nation's culture wars have pushed into the season of giving. Each side wants its beliefs accurately represented around the nation's winter hearth -- its public schools and government spaces and even want the change to include my livingroom.

And if not, it will sue. And personally it's a sad day in American when you have to retain an attorney to say Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza or Happy Hannukah, or when you can't call a Christmas tree what it is. Its a sad day when kids can't sing Silent Night, or Rock of Ages. Its a sad day when we can't embrace our differences and traditions and learn from them and love and admire and respect them and want to also share our differences with other. Its a sad day when we as a people feel intimidated over eachothers religions, when we feel that one group is getting more than another Its a sad day because traditions and differences use to be what made this country so great....Now it is just tearing us apart and NO ONE IS GOING TO WIN..... but many, many are going to lose

Lynne you might be right to a point, but day in and out, the ACLU and other anti-christian groups ARE out to eradicate Christianity from the public square. They put out the lie that we're out to force our beliefs upon everyone else. Ever notice it's only Christians who get sued for stuff? Sure it's ok to make 7th graders in Byron, CA wear muslim clothing, pretend that they are muslims, and the like, but heaven forbid we should say anything about Jesus.

Saying "Merry Christmas" is not the same as cornering someone and preaching your beliefs to them. I have no problem with the first, but the second irritates the h*ll out of me, regardless of the belief system that's being preached. I hate it when Atheists OR Christians pull that crap.

Personally, I send *holiday* cards because I'm celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years with them. I could send three different cards, but I don't like the post office that much.

I put up a Christmas tree and the presents under it bear no markings of the retailer's signage. My family will be celebrating at home, not at the store, anyway.

Again, I really don't get why people are upset over this...

I should note again that retailers who don't say Christmas aren't really the issue. I have no problem with people whose beliefs are not the same as mine, but I do have a problem with the free expression of mine being trampled upon. If we can teach about Islam in schools, then we can teach about Christianity, Bahai, Voodoo, or whatever. I don't mind learning about other cultures. But the Byron, CA school district is over the line.

FYI Xmas abbreviation for Christmas is of Greek origin. the Greek word for Christ is Xristos. Europeans began using the first initial of Christ's name, "X" in place of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word. Christians who do not understand the Greek language mistake "Xmas" as a sign of disrespect and the removal of Christ from Christmas.

Only you can allow your celebration of whatever you celebrate to be too politically correct or regulated. As long as Church and State are seperate by law i will celebrate my Christmas how I feel propper and everybody else can celebrate their holiday how they think it should be. I know we aren't allowed to discuss relegion on here so i will skipo the verses about what jesus said about public displays that were not those true believers.

2big~~FYI, yes, there are some people out there that do write it that way to take CHRIST out of it on purpose so thats why I stated, that I choose not to write it that way! Thanks for the greek lesson though!

Just an FYI it's not just an American issue..I think we started to do the PC 'happy holidays' thing even long before there...though we're very very mulitcultural here and have a very high immigrant population, which is most likely why.
