I think we're becoming to PC about everything.... honestly....

do your own thing... celebrate your own ways, beliefs... and let others do the same.....

whatever happened to the thing about 'majority rules'.....

there's a link about how the tree got into the whole thing.....

seriously.... as a middle school teacher... I'm to the point that I will not even give kids candy etc. this year... I used to spend about $10 to $15 each on my sp. ed. kids... but now you never know who will be offended by a candy cane......

    so I quit...

personally I love Christmas ...even though I have to borrow it...sorry MOG ..you may not understand why a nonChristian would want to celebrate a Christian holiday..but as I said before ..I was hijacked by it..there is not much choice ..besides it is fun! I also enjoy many other holidays I borrow..that is one of the coolest things about being an agnostic American woman...is that I am free to dip my toes in a plenty of streams!..
I did the entire month of Ramadan when I worked in a Muslim community ..that was fun I can tell you!!!! as soon as the sun goes down the food, music and fun begins ...

most folks do not mind you wanting to learn about what they do celebrate and they do not consider it disrespectful to honor their holidays ....I think it is very nice and considerate...to ask questions and share traditions....this is a multi cultural nation not a melting pot anymore ..do not fool yourselves
The bunnies and the trees are pagan symbols that were adopted with associated symbology that in some cases really reach for an association, imo. Which is why I don't consider Christmas trees or Easter eggs to be promoting any religion.

Personally, I think people who are easily offended by religious symbology or religions in general are the people who aren't terribly secure in their own beliefs. (just my 2 net carbs....)

Re: Are we becoming too politically correct about the holidays? Not PC enough?

We got a newsletter from our kids' school yesterday. They are among those who bend over backwards to be PC and they write "many of our students have already celebrated Hanukkah..." Really? Why would they do that when it doesn't start until after Christmas? Are there some Christian children who've already celebrated Christmas perhaps? Maybe they should do a little research if they want to be truly PC. This irritated me very much, as I celebrate both. I don't celebrate Kwanza or Eid, but I don't go around acting like I know what's going on with those things when I don't have a clue what they really are or when they are celebrated. I also apologize if I've spelled those wrong. Well, thanks for letting me get that off my ample bosom.

LOL, so much for our school system - someone needs to educate them I think.

I wasn't referring to you in particular Heidi. I'm referring to anyone who is offended by any type of religious symbology.

However, I do find it interesting that you assume I am a practicing Christian or even a Christian because I appear to have sided with them. Some of us who side with the religious, aren't necessarily religious, but are only trying to be truly fair and truly open-minded.

Much too often, I see people denying others the right to express themselves because they don't share those views. That's not being respectful or tolerant or whatever else you want to categorize it. That's just being oppressive. If our society wants to truly "celebrate" cultural diversity, then society has to stop this nonsense of censoring a particular group and become tolerant of all cultures including the Christian culture.

Re: Are we becoming too politically correct about the holidays? Not PC enough?

when my little nephew was in 3rd grade, his grade was going to do a skating/pizza party at a new local rink.. (our little town out here in the boonies has like 5 traffic lights... TOPS)... so the new rink was a big deal....

so instead of having cupcakes/class party... as they've always expected... they were going on a skating party day...

one kid who had recently moved into the area from some other country.. (I honestly don't remember)... but his parents complained... and the school board cancelled the whole trip...

why couldn't the kid just stay home with his parents.. or come to school and stay with a different teacher....

boy.. what way to make new friends when you're 8 or 9.. in a new place........

it only takes one experience like that to give kids a bad impression of whatever the objection was......

it's like one kid caused 75 kids to lose the privilege.......

Wow! I am impressed with how civil this conversation has remained! The respect, lack of judgement and the polite demeanor with which you are all posting makes me not only very glad to know each and every one of you, but also more educated about the differing opinions, experiences and beliefs everyone has!

                      You guys are the best!
