Do you get their teeth cleaned at the vets?

I dont have a dog, but my mum has a cat. She has had his teeth cleaned at the vets.

    Does that help at all?

Our little doggy's teeth were in really bad shape when we got him. The vet said they would need to knock him out to clean them. That wasn't top priority though so we bought some doggy toothpaste and we brush them a couple of times a week. We also bought special dental food from the vet and dh bought a couple of big beef bones for him to gnaw on. The next time we went to the vet's he was amazed b/c the brown teeth were all pretty white and there was no need to have a major cleaning. So no, we don't get the vet to do it. We do it ourselves.

Re: If you have a dog?

Thanks guys. It just always seemed silly to me. But it seems that these days its another one of those "politically correct" things to do as far as the vets are concerned. I will have them tell me that her teeth look great, especially for her age (they can never believe how old she is!) But then they'll suggest I get them cleaned.

We've had dogs all my life and never even considered it.

here comes the "but"...But, I have doggie insurance (its not technically 'insurance" but kinda like it) that covers cetain procedures ---I just upgraded it yesterday due to the fact that I had to get her xrays and blood work and now the package I have includes teeth cleaning.

I'm taking her to get her fixed in a couple of weeks and they want to do it while she's knocked out for her surgery. Still seems silly to me, but its included and won't cost anything so I guess I'll let them do it. Weird.

The idea behind the teeth cleaning is the same as for people, I think. If they get bacteria in their bloodstream b/c of gingivitis or whatever then they could have a heart attack. If it's included then you might as well go for it. She'll be knocked out anyway. Ummmm, but why are you getting her fixed now? She's 11 (77 in dog years, right?). Is she becoming randy in her old age? lol

Re: If you have a dog?

LOL, no she's not Randy. Originally I didn't have her fixed because I wanted her to have 1 liter of puppies, I had 5 people besides myself that I had promised puppies to. Well she only met one Romeo and I guess he was shooting blanks, cause nothing came of it.

Well, now I have learned that if you don't have them fixed that in old age they have a high risk of developing a very serious, usually fatal infection in their uterus! Well since her breed is know to live as long as 24 years I figure I don't want to take any chances, she still potentially has a very long life left in her!

what kind of cat is it? what does he eat?
Im asking because Ive asked several vets, in several countries about having my babies´s teeth cleaned and they have alwasy said that if they eat good and dry food there si no need for it.

Re: If you have a dog?

I give my puppy these green dental chews that give her good breath and are supposed to help clean her teeth as she gnaws on it....

I don't clean my cat's teeth nor do I take him to the vet......he usually eats dry food....but he's only 2 years old, so he's probably still okay...

Yea, Gizzie gets all kinds of chews to keep her teeth clean and they always tell me they look great..I think this cleaning thing is just another way for them to make $$!

Gizmo won't touch those green ones that smell like mint though, try to give her one and she'll look at you like you've lost your mind!

Pedro gets Greenie's and the vet says his teeth are fine. I guess if he had a problem, we would get them cleaned.
