Re: What frightens you most about getting old?
I think the best policy is to savour each phase of live as you live through it. Would I want to be 17 again? No. Would I want to have two toddlers in the house again? No. I am in late middle age and looking forward to being a Grandparent, though I guess its a few years away yet. I am certainly looking forward to my "children" finishing tertiary education and to my retirement from the army. My wife and I can together start a new lifestyle. We will have to look after ourselves and each other and stay as fit and as active as possible for as long as possible. Growing old gracefully, I think it's called. At any stage of life tragedy can strike, so the young are no less vulnerable than the old. The best is to stay fit and healthy till almost the end, but that is down to providence.
No point in getting depressed about it. Today is what matters.
How about "The all day hymn"?
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy,
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labours, and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
