  • Anyone watch The Biggest Loser?

I watched the first show on Tuesday night. I had never really watched it before and I was amazed how these people lost 20 plus pounds in one week!

Are they given a low carb diet does anyone know?

Did you see how they showed what the inside of our bodies look like and what are actual age is based on our health due to obesity? If that doesnt get you off the couch and moving I dont know what will. It was very motivational!

I don't know what their diet is, but their weight loss isn't realistic IMO. Don't forget theyr'e in a 'boot camp' like setting with professional traininers where they are working out HARD for hours a day....as well as having their food limited.

a 20 lb weight loss in one week isn't a healthy rate of weight loss.

I've never heard that they're on a low carb diet, though maybe someone else might have some insight?

Re: Anyone watch The Biggest Loser?

I did, it was awesome. Having spouses running against parents & children. I'm in awe with the oldest parent & youngest child. He was really trying. I didn't get to see who had to go home, my cable went out the last 10 minutes for 3 hours.

I'll check it out next week because I'm doing my own personal challenge throughout the whole series until it ends. I don't want to look for an exercise challenge or food challenge or journal etc, that means I have to spend more time on the computer. For me, I've been addicted to the computer and trying to spend a lot less time on it. Well, I hope to see you, Razzle, here next week?!
      THANK YOU

I watch that show too. Have watched several seasons. I find it interesting and inspiring to see that people can lose weight and totally reform themselves. They sure work incredible hard. It may not always be totally realistic - and some times more time passes between the weigh ins than they give the impression of on the show.
As far as I understand from previous seasons they eat low calorie diet. They eat carbs but concentrate on so called healthy carbs (so they cut out most white food basically)
I always feel sorry for those cut out in the beginning - they have not had a chance to really go through the programme and get a good solid start on things.
(PS the Brown Team went home - married couple from Chicago if I remember correctly)

Science Behind “The Biggest Loser” Diet « Balanced Health and Nutrition Rebecca Scritchfield’s Blog

          * modified, low carbohydrate diet 45% of calories from carbohydrates (mostly fruits, vegetables and some whole grains), 30% of calories from protein, and 25% of calories from healthy fats or oils (seeds, nuts, avocado, olive oil)
          * no “white stuff”
          * whole foods, elemental ingredients
          * 4-3-2-1: daily 4 cups minimum of fruits and vegetables, 3 servings of healthy proteins (e.g. fish, skinless chicken breast, 93% lean ground turkey), 2 servings of whole grains, and 1 serving of healthy fat.
          * Aim for everyone to have 1 serving of fish daily.
          * There is room for 1 optional treat per day.
          * Cereals must have minimum 5 grams of fiber per serving and less than 5 grams of sugar per serving. This limits the cereals to certain oatmeals, bran cereals, or other high fiber cereals on the market.
          * Goal of 7 calories per pound of body weight for daily caloric intake. This is recalculated after significant weight loss.

            WOW great info thanks Adam!
I cant get into the fish thing. Bleh! The only fish I eat on Atkins is tuna.
ckiwis- I know that older man and his daughter just killed me. When his daughter raced to get immunity for her dad...tear jerker! I was hooked on the show. I wonder with his heart condition how far he will be able to participate.
Liv and sadie147- I had no idea that more time passes than is shown. That makes more sense! I feel bad for the people who are cut out early too. They still have the chance to lose at home and compete for the 100,000 dollar prize right?
I am going to be a weekly watcher. I am hooked!

WEDNESDAY: DID YOU CATCH THE SHOW?
              By Jillian Michaels

The Biggest Loser Recap: Time for Introductions
I hope everyone caught last night's season premiere of The Biggest Loser, Season 6... but if you didn't, don't fret 'cause I'm here to break it down. This year it's all about families — couples and parent–child teams — and let me tell you, starting this season out was quite an eye-opening experience. These men and women need to lose major weight, and Bob and I were ready to kick butt to get them started on their path toward becoming the "Biggest Loser." It isn't just about the contestants this time around — their families are depending on them not only to give it their all at the Ranch, but to come back home and stay healthy for years to come. It's all on the line for them.

Go Out and Get Them: This year, Bob and I selected our teams, and then we traveled around the country or surprised them with a phone call to let them know they would be soon joining us at the Ranch. I was assigned to the parents and kids, and Bob is training the couples. It was a little shocking how badly some of these families need help...when I went to Boston to pick up my Grey Team, son and dad pair, Tom Sr. and Tom Jr., I saw that the whole family was obese, weighing in from 350 to 550 pounds. Son Tom showed off a GIGANTIC bowl of Alfredo pasta that he claimed he could eat every meal...yikes!! Then Bob went to Houma, Louisiana, to meet his Brown Team, Brady and Vicky, whose 4-year-old is 63 pounds — 13 pounds heavier than her 7-year-old brother. Each of the eight teams were in for a major learning experience at the Ranch.
Welcome to the Ranch: After Alison Sweeney welcomed the players to the Ranch, it was time to start weighing in to capture each contestant's starting point. I learned I had the heaviest team to train, the Grey Team, who weighed in at a combined 671 pounds. Later, at the gym, I might have come off as a little brutal when I told the Yellow Team's Coleen to think about her father about to drop dead on the treadmill before giving up, but according to the show's medical doctor, Dr. Robert Huizenga, her dad Jerry was the least healthy person ever to be on the show, with every risk factor imaginable. In fact, he was limited to only 30 minutes of exercise a day (first time that ever happened!), so he and Coleen had to FIGHT to stay here. Later on in the show, the doctor gave the contestants a glimpse of the damage they had done over a lifetime of unhealthy habits by calculating their biological ages — the age their bodies appeared to be medically. Jerry, whose chronological age is 51, had the body of a 76-year-old, while the Brown Team's Vicky, age 37, has the body of a 48-year-old. Both Purple Team's Amy and the Pink Team's Michele are 26, but their bodies' true ages turned out to be 47 and 41, respectively. Tom Jr., only 23 years old, was 49 on the inside. It was time to reverse that damage...
Terrain Challenge: For the season's first challenge, the contestants had to push themselves — for some, harder than they ever had before — to search a mile of difficult terrain, in heat over 100 degrees, for prizes that had been dropped by planes. The rewards were a 24-hour visit home, a phone call home, two days of luxury, an extra vote at the elimination, $5,000, 24 hours with Bob or me, and immunity at elimination. The first team to get both family members to the prize of their choosing would claim it, but the last team to reach a prize would get the disadvantage of a 2-pound penalty at the weigh-in. Tom Sr. and Jerry had to sit out of the contest for medical reasons, so it was up to their teammates to find prizes. The Brown Team, Brady and Vicky, came in last and agreed they needed to just work out a little bit harder that week to stay in the game. And doing it herself, Jerry's daughter Coleen landed the prize of immunity for herself and her dad.
First Weigh-in and Elimination: After a killer last-chance workout, it was time to get on the scale. Vicky and Brady, despite having the added 2-pound penalty from the challenge, ended up in first place this week, losing 47 pounds total. The Orange Team's Heba and Ed and the Green Team's Stacey and Adam fell below the yellow line; in the end, Stacey and Adam were the first family to go.
Back in Washington, D.C., Stacey has lost a total of 46 pounds, and her husband Adam has lost 54 pounds since the start of filming — both look great! They've learned how to balance family life, working out, and getting healthy, and they've even motivated co-workers with their own "Biggest Loser" contest at work.

Re: Anyone watch The Biggest Loser?

Alright, a thread for this season! Thanks for starting this, Razzle!

My sister told me about it the other night and I caught most of the first show online. It seems the whole show isn't there, though, because it didn't show who was eliminated. (Sherri's post gave the info...)

I'm so rootin' for the Yellow team, couldn't breathe during the elimination tonight. But the Gray team's progress since they left totally floored me!

Watching what they are doing has really got me thinking of what to do here for myself. A few of my brothers live on hills that can give me great workouts, just got to get off my butt and DO IT! The workouts from up and down the stairs yesterday and mowing the lawn has helped my legs some already. Time to go for major burn!

As for the foods, Jillian stated no less than 1200 calories. A dietician I saw stated (for me at least) no less than 1400 calories. Those recipes looked really good! Got to see if I can find them on their site. If I do, I'll post the links here.

Re: Anyone watch The Biggest Loser?

Wow, that slide looked fun but I didn't know they had to go multiple times. That must've very exhausting. Thanks Terry, I hope you can find the recipes. I've looked at a lot places but only could find Season 5 posted on the site. I sure like to find "Tiny Turkey Meatball and Chickpea Soup" or even the other ones they had tonight.

They're selling a couple of Biggest Loser Cookbooks (2006) on Amazon. And they're suppose to have a Family Cookbook up for sale in November 2008. I don't know if the recipes that they show tonight will be on there. That would be cool.

All of the families inspire me. I'm in awe and proud of Tom Sr who completely got off all his medications. Especially the one for Diabetes, so he's the one that sticks out the most because I have Diabetes too. I have been exercising but not like them. That's hard, so I'm taking it slow, not too slow but getting there. The exercise, eating low-glycemic foods, changing my mentality and visiting this website/forum is what is going to get me to my goal.

                  See you next week.

Re: Anyone watch The Biggest Loser?

I LOVE the biggest loser (Bob *swoon*) I've only ever seen one series and that was the last one with the couples.... (I totally fell in love with Jay really wished he'd win as his confidence levels just shot up through the series)

Its funny because I tried to watch the UK version which is horrendous not a patch on the USA one....in the first week they were losing 3lbs etc and when you compare that to the amount that the Americans lose they can't be doing all the exercise etc

I think they lose so much because they work out for hours and hours and hours and they have a lot to lose and as some of you know the bigger you are the more you seem to lose in your first week etc

I'll be looking out for this new series hopefully UK telly will snap it up soon!

The Kids are definetly getting the Wii for xmas. It looks like so much fun. Maybe a slip in slide next summer. That looked like fun until they were hitting the grass....ugh!
I am so glad there are other Biggest Loser fans out there!

I was amazed by how good the Grey team looks. I wish they told us how many inches people have lost instead of just putting emphasis on the scale. I think they should do both. Amazing how little they lost that second week.

With hours and hours of exercise. I would be rippin mad if I busted my bum all week and ate like a rabbit and only lost 2 pounds. I LOVE Atkins!!

For those of you who didnt see the show you can go to the website at http://www.nbc.com/The_Biggest_Loser/
They have a video library of 2 minute segments of the show and you can get caught up.

TMN- I am rootin for the yellow team too. I think because that man is going to DIE unless he loses this weight! I feel for his daughter. She is such a sweetheart. I really hope they do well this week.

WEDNESDAY: DID YOU CATCH THE SHOW?

The Biggest Loser Recap: The Week 2 Curse
If you've watched other seasons of The Biggest Loser, you know that Week 2 is never pretty. After losing big during Week 1, the contestants' bodies go into panic mode, and dropping pounds gets a LOT harder. That's why the average weight loss among all the players in the show's history is a measly 2 percent of their body weight. Did my team better that average this year? Well, not exactly...

Bidding War: You know I'm not a fan of temptations that could cripple my players at the weigh-in, so when you hear about this one you'll understand why I FLIPPED...Alison called all the players into a room where each family was given a paddle and told it was auction time. Only instead of bidding on an item, they were bidding to lose a certain percentage of their body weight. Now, mind you, Alison was VERY clear that the odds were against the players in Week 2. Yet still, a couple of teams got into a bidding war, and Coleen and Jerry ended up on top, with the audacious (read: insane) bid that they would lose 2.4 percent of their body weight — at least 14 pounds. If they succeeded, they would win $10,000. If they failed, they would automatically fall below the yellow line. I flat out told Coleen she'd lost her mind — IT WAS WEEK 2 for crying out loud!! You can bet I punished her and Jerry in the gym for taking that gamble with their time on the Ranch. They had to learn that their actions have consequences...
"Sprint and Slide": Remember the Slip 'N Slide from when you were a kid? Well, imagine that game's evil twin and you've got an idea of what this week's challenge was like. Alison led the contestants to a hill, where each family was assigned to a water slide. Taking turns, each player had to slide down the hill and then make it back up before the time ran out for that round. For the first few rounds, they had two minutes, but after a few rounds Alison turned up the heat by dropping the time to a minute and a half. Teams that didn't beat the clock were eliminated, and the rounds continued — all the way up to 18 — until there was only one family standing. That hardcore team was husband-and-wife duo Ed and Heda, who won the coveted prize of a phone call home, plus the ability to grant phone time to one other team. They chose Amy and Phil so the pair could talk to the three young sons they missed so much.
Top Biggest Loser Chef? In an encore to his appearance last season, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito showed up on the Ranch to school the players on healthy cooking. Having developed seven recipes that each cost less than $7 to make, he assigned a different recipe to each team's self-professed worst cook. He took the fledgling chefs to the grocery store and showed them how to choose the freshest ingredients, then he whisked them back to the kitchen to prepare their meals, which the other teammates then sampled. Without knowing who had cooked what, the second group of players had to rate each dish on a scale of one to ten. The winning meal was the turkey meatball and chickpea soup prepared by Amy of the Purple team, so she and her mother, Shellay, walked away with a sweet prize: a year of free groceries!
The Dreaded Weigh-in: We didn't expect this weigh-in to be a picnic, and it wasn't. Many of the teams pulled totally respectable numbers, considering that it was Week 2. My Grey Team, Tom and LT, didn't fare so well — Tom Sr. managed to drop 3 pounds, but Little Tom gained 3 to keep their weight loss at nil. They fell below the yellow line with Coleen and Jerry, whose little gamble didn't pay off: Although they lost a very decent 11 pounds, it wasn't enough to beat their bid of 2.4 percent of their body weight. (Had they not gone loony tunes and taken that temptation, they would have been in third place. See? CONSEQUENCES.) At the elimination, the other teams voted off the big boys, so Coleen and Jerry got a very lucky reprieve. And the Toms are doing great on their own at home — you can bet they're going to give the other kicked-off contestants a run for their money at the finale!
