Oh my goodness! I FORGOT she was back. After this, I won't forget again.

Guess we should say that our challenge is to get back in ketosis (IF we were out for a tiny bit) and then keep the limit of carbs low so we can get our weight loss kicked into high gear again. Most of us had been rolling along losing weight very slowly and enjoying our new pre-maintenance existence. We just now decided that we should be striving harder to reach our goal that we set in the beginning. Only then should be relax and enjoy pre-maintenance. So --- our efforts are doubled and re-doubled to get our bodies moving again and our weightloss kick started. That's all that was intended by this challenge.

Now wait a minute, I was the one who originally said the nuts weren't allowed. Well I indicated it by my tone. I wanted skank to fess up and I wanted the newbies to go hunt for the answer. As a teacher if you learn it for yourself you learn, if I tell you it goes in one ear and out the other. or whatever. lol
2Big you are absouletly right we should not do this for 2 weeks. I think I said that in mod. when this came up. lol Well what I actually said in a whining tone was "you mean I have to do a full 2 weeks of clean induction?'' and then I could hear all of you calling me a pansy and twisting my arm (ouchhhhhhhhh) so I caved under pressure.
Anyway that is my story and I am sticking to it. LOL ut

Ok, now I am so confused. First Skank eating nuts, and legendkeeper eating muffins, and 2big telling us off.....(and I called Iap a party pooper for not joining us.. :boom ) What is the challenge......
I had a mushroom and cheese omelet for breakfast yesterday, a cobb salad made with chicken breast, bacon, bleu cheese, lettuce, cherry tomatoes with oil and vinegar dressing. I had a can of sardines and a cheese crisp for dinner.

I did good too. I can already feel that my body is telling me I'm doing the right thing.

I want to do FitDay tomorrow and open up the journal like was suggested. I'll try to go back and put today's foods in also. I did not exercise today like I intended but will start tomorrow FOR SURE.

OK maybe I should rephrase & clarify the whole thing here.

Our old friend correctly pointed out that 'induction' is designed to jump start ketosis in our bodies as many of us who have lived in the developed carb rich world have never been in fat burning mode. It is a severe regiem that awakens this process in our bodies & for 1st timers it is used to deplete all the stores of glycogen, turn on the fat burning switch & often if done 'cleanly' usually results in a very large weight loss of approximately 10% of body weight in the space of just a few short weeks.

As we move on through the phases of Atkins now that we've been in ketois our body then burns carbs AND fat as fuel. I never have used the 'purple pee strips' but everytime I get a physical the urinalysis shows a big + in the 'ketones' column even though I'm eating more carbs. This means my body is now regularly burning both carbs & fat as fuel.

For the past 1&1/2 Monthes I increased my carbs substantially for several reasons, because I exercise a lot now(twice a day), I also happend to think holding steady for a while after a period of substained losing is good for the body & also helps let the skin catch up & tone up too, & well it was the holiday season & why not celebrate life a little especially in light of the huge gains(or losses actually) I've made healthwise over the past half year.

So now I decided to see if I can start losing regularly again by 'dropping my carbs back to induction level carbohydrate consumption' & at the same time letting those who have just joined us know how to do it in a step by step basis.

I do not anticipate a 10% weight loss, I'm just simply striving to start the losing process up again after 'putting on the brakes' & maintaining for a while.

Finally here is something else that I feel is of utmost importance. I started this WOL because a few years ago I became one those late life SyndromeX/Type II Diabetic persons you read about. By eating Atkins & taking a specific group of recommended supplements within a few monthes I was able to get rid of the prescription meds that the MD was prescribing that somehow only worked for a while then the dosage had to be upgraded, etc. The bottom line is that those meds work only temporarily. But by doing Atlins slowly but surely my Blood Glucose levels have completely normalized (w/o any meds now) & even when I was playing around with my 'holding pattern' weight by increasing the carbs the diabetes was just plain nowhere to be found. Atkins is a great thing for people who want to drop lbs. For Diabetics it is a lifesaving plan that completely 100% controls Diabetes which is one of the world's largest killer diseases & growing every day.

I will openly admit that for me Atkins is primarily about curing my degerative diseases/conditions & the weightloss is a secondary (yet just as exciting & obviously more visible) goal/result.

Atkins is not just about losing weight, together w/exercise & supplements it is a nutritional plan that truely can help 'heal' Diabetes, Hypertension & High Blood Cholesterol. Of course these diseases or conditions are often directly linked to obesity but that is not always the case. So for anybody just startying this WOL if you suffer from any of the above afflictions this is going to really change your life if you stick with it.

As for this 'challenge' I'm thinking maybe we can make 3-4 threads to keep up in this section to help all the newcomers titled Breakfasts, Lunches & Meals on the Go, Dinner, snacktime & post specific induction allowed meals that we have eaten for people that have just started. Anybody like that idea? If yes I'll start doing it right away.
I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once

If anyone is interested here is the link to my fitday journal.

Well, I for one am still cheat free and in Ketosis. Have not messed up. I am doing this challange because I want to and for the life of me can see no harm in going back on induction to make a fresh start for the New Years. I have a challange going here on the home front with two newbies in my family and I told them I would do it with them. They are inspiring me and I am excited. I have been cheat free and in ketosis for over 9 months (opps.....antibiotics knocked me out for 2 weeks in November), redoing induction for me is purely a refresher.......along with many other New Years things I am redoing and doing. So.....lets go all you newbies I am with you and IMHO I am not hurting myself nor anyone else.
Also....IMHO.....2 big is correct. You never "need" to go back to a full 2 week induction. Again......once your are on this plan for an extended period of time it becomes very personalized. I do not feel I am in any danger of induction abuse and again am excited to do ANOTHER clean induction.

Well I would like to join in on this as well.

It has been a while since I have been on the boards. I started on October 7th and lost 28lbs in 30 days. So far I have lost 31 lbs but I have stagnated. Due to holiday indulgence. Fortunately I didn't gain weight so that is somewhat of an accomplishment.

Anyway time to kick off the New Year right. I have a long way to go to my goal so I need to get on it.

I would like to lose another 30lbs. by the end of Feb. That's going to take some work but I am going to do it. This is the best way to get started.

Walt, glad to have you aboard. Congratulations on NOT gaining any weight through the holidays.

When you have time, list some menus that you eat so we can help others who are doing this too. We want to make it as easy as we can for newbies and having them see what they can eat while on Induction is going to help them stay on track.

Good luck to you. Thanks for joining our challenge. We CAN do it!!

2big, please pull the pins out of my vodoo doll now... :smileangel

I appear to be sick now, so I slept through my workout time. Was late for work, so I had one of those muffins that's not made its way to the freezer yet.

Had tea at work to help ease my sore throat and some coffee to help keep me awake through our team meeting. Hot seems to work better than cold and hot water is just yuck, so I'm down on my water, too.

Lunch, however, was acceptable. 1/2 of the 'pizza' and some asparagus.

Dinner might have to be a shake because I had the braces tightened this afternoon.

Tomorrow I plan on just shooting myself...

                            Hi all,
I just joined and would like to jump in on the clean induction challenge. I'm not new to Atkins - we started last year and had great success til the holidays. Both my hubby and I put on a few lbs. and my BP really skyrocketed when I started grazing on junk. I'm pretty close to my goal weight but have craved sweets like crazy after eating too many! We started induction yesterday and I could use the support and advice. [/code]

I just started also and would like to join in the challenge! Sample menus and all tips would be wonderful.
First question.....what is a clean induction? Are you keeping to 0 carbs?

Breakfast- 1 egg, 1 thin slice of ham
Lunch-McDonald's cheeseburger (no bun), celery, small salad
Dinner-7 baked chicken wings (single pieces not whole wing), saute green squash.

Drinking lots of water. What do ya'll think? Eat less, more, change anything? :flowerki:

A clean induction is following all of the Induction rules. As you can see, the mods are having some problems with that... lol

Don't want to have 0 carbs for the day, ever, but less than 20 is ok.

                                From the Atkins's website:
You will follow these basic rules:

                                - Eat three meals a day. Stabilizing the blood sugar is the basic tool of controlled carbohydrate weight loss, and to achieve this you should not go longer than six waking hours without eating acceptable food. You can, however, eat four or five smaller meals a day, as long as you don't exceed 20 grams of carbohydrates.
                                - You are permitted to eat liberal amounts of eggs, meat and fish, including beef, pork, chicken, turkey, duck, wild game, shellfish, veal and lamb. Eat until you feel pleasantly full, but do not gorge.
                                - Liberal amounts of fats and oils are permitted. This includes butter, olive oil, mayonnaise and any oil that is liquid at room temperature. (Consume no hydrogenated oils or other trans fats—-including margarine.)
                                - Herbs and spices are permitted as long as they do not contain sugar.
                                - Cheese (aged, full-fat, firm, soft, semisoft) is limited to three to four ounces daily. Fresh cheese, such as cottage cheese and farmer's cheese, is too high in carbohydrates for Induction.
                                - You may have up to three cups of loosely packed (measured raw) salad vegetables each day. This includes all leafy green vegetables, mushrooms, celery, radishes, green peppers and cucumbers. Click here for other permissible salad vegetables.
                                - Other vegetables low in carbohydrates (see Acceptable Foods) are limited to one cup daily. (If you have a cup of these veggies, consume only two cups of salad vegetables.)

There are a number of dos and don'ts you must adhere to for successful weight loss.

                                You must:

                                - Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of pure water daily. This can be filtered, mineral or spring water (not seltzer). You may also have unlimited amounts of herbal tea (without sugar), but these do not count toward your total of eight glasses.
                                - Drink only decaffeinated coffee and tea and use only acceptable sweeteners (see below).
                                - Treat aspartame (NutraSweet® or Equal®) with caution. Avoid whenever possible. This includes products sweetened with these ingredients, such as diet sodas and diet Jell-O. Instead use sucralose, (Splenda®) or saccharin (Sweet'n Low™).
                                - Check labels on other products that purport to be low- or controlled carb.
                                - When eating out, be careful you're not consuming "hidden" carbohydrates in sauces or breaded products. Tell your waiter that you would like your food prepared free of sugar, flour and cornstarch.
                                - At a minimum, take a good daily multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and calcium, but without iron. more info
                                - Unless you are physically unable to do so, exercise every day, even if it's just a walk around the block. This is an important part of the program in all phases and will certainly increase the rate at which you lose weight. That's because exercise not only causes you to burn calories, it also accelerates your metabolism.

                                You can:

                                - Have a snack of a permissible food an hour or two after a meal if you wish.

                                You must not:

-Overeat. You may have heard that you can eat as much as you desire of the acceptable foods. No so. Stuff yourself with steaks and cheeseburgers, and some of that protein will convert to glucose in your body. Instead, simply eat the amount that allows you to feel satisfied.
                                -Drink alcohol in any form.
-Use more than three packets of sucralose (Splenda) daily. (More and more products are being made with Splenda so if you use any, don't forget to include those grams in your tally.)
-Cheat. It takes two to three days for the body to switch from burning carbohydrates (in the form of glucose) to fat burning. One cheat and you're back to a glucose-burning metabolism, and you can lose the effects of two or three days of fat burning.

You must not eat any of the following:

-Sugar (in any form, including corn syrup, honey and maple syrup)
-Milk or yogurt (cream is allowed in limited amounts)
                                -Fruit and fruit juice
-Flour products (breads, pasta, crackers, etc.)
                                -Grains or cereals
