      Don't Look

This is an amazing board filled with people who give far more of their time, knowledge and affection than any I have ever encountered! Make yourself at home and remember this is a safe place, without judgment, just support and encouragement.

        Re: Hi

Hi, I am new to this Bb also, fairly new. I found it about 2 weeks ago. I have tried to lose weight all my life and enjoyed a few years of weightloss, but got too comfortable and off guard. So, here I am! I have done Atkins before and lost but again, got too careless and thought that since I had lost, I could now eat "normally"!!!! Well "normally" for me is this fantasy of eating like I see a few lucky people who eat and never seem to gain wieght. Well lucky them...I am not that lucky. I have recently come to realize that this has to be a way of life (WOL). It has to be a total shift in thinking about eating and staying healthy for me. I am 56 and i have adopted four children with disabilities. As I get older, I realize that if I am going to be here for them for a while longer, I MUST take care of myself. My family has a lot of diabetes in it and I don't want to get diabetes. But I know it is a sure thing if i don't get a hold of my life and how I eat. It is the one area of my life I have never been able to manage well. And now I am determined to take each day and celebrate a day of good eating the low carb way....celebrating, not by eating, but by just loving myself for making one more day healthier by not loading up on carbohydrates. I have come to realize that I have an allergy and it truly is an allergy...to carbs. They make me sick!!!! I know now that bloating and belly fat and heartburn and all that uncomfortable feeling comes from eating starch and sugar!!!
I also know that carbs cause me heartache...heartache at feeling so inadequate and out of control. Since I found this BB and have changed the way I feed my body and soul and gotten the support I have always needed from people to keep eating the way that doesn't make me "sick" I have found a totally different way of viewing my body and myself.....I have taken control and tried to do it humbly, because I know that starch and sugar are so available that I have to be very careful. I still have a bunch at home who can eat carbs and not have the allergy I have to them...although I am slowly begining to wean them to more of my way of eating because I know it will be healthier for them too!!!
So, your biggest challenge is to just start!!!! Believe me, it has cost $ me way less to eat this way than the carb way....because you don't have a "habit' to feed. And like some other wise person has mentioned...tuna, chicken,...I love pork rinds and a little tiny bit of peanut butter and beef jerky satisfies my need to chew!!! These are not expensive and eggs are about as cheap as you can go. Eggs can go so many ways...salad, deviled, fried , boiled, poached. Make it a challenge to see how you can make protein taste so many ways...and I read and re-read my Atkins book. My husband asked the other day if I didn't have it memorized yet...I said yes, almost, but I never get tired of reading it over and over. Sounds like you have a great husband who loves something about you that maybe you can't see or won't see. Take this step and I bet you'll find out what he loves so much about you!!!!

          Re: Hi

Gosh! Thank you to everyone who has responded to my pain. I am truly shocked and excited at the possibility of friendships like your's. Miss Becky Sue (i remembered!) sent me the book and yes, I jumped immediately in and started reading it. My husband and I are reading together so that we both have an absolute understanding of the how's and why's of the program. I cannot fail this time. I just can't. I might not have another chance. Miss Becky said to read and re-read the book, just like one of you said you are doing as well. That is what I plan to do. I refuse to set myself up to fail by starting a week before Thanksgiving and possibly Christmas, so I will continue reading until I feel like I can succeed. One of the ladies sent me several testimonials from people who've lost amazing amounts of weight. Forgive me if I don't remember names just yet. (I have a memory problem...seriously.) I read their personal accounts aloud to my husband and he wanted to hear more! haha. He's sold already too.

As excited as I am though, I don't wanna make the mistake of thinking this is gonna be a breeze. I am glad the folks who wrote their journeys, included their trials as well. That helped to keep things in perspective for me.

You all seem so very nice. I hope you still like me after you get to know me. I have neglected to post much due to that fear. But I am trying. And i thank you all for caring, if I haven't already said that.

          Hugs to all,

          me
ps. by your powers combined...i am still here! (loved that line! felt like i was in a game)

            Re: Hi

            Hi dontlookatme

I am a newbie here (starting again after having seen Atkins work for me in the past).

Sounds like everyone has offered loads of great advice. All I want to add is that it is better to try something/ some eating plan (and let me tell you Atkins is a great one!) than to simply let day after day pass without making any move or decision. Whilst you might be upset that you have over 100 pounds to lose, remember that your body wants to lose its extra weight so in fact you are at an advantage because the weight will just fall off you ! Speaking from experience and also from having heard/ read a lot of stories from people, it is generally the case that the more weight you need to lose, the faster it falls off you (especially at the beginning).....even if you only make small changes slowly. Changing to protien foods will have a DRAMATIC effect on your weight and I imagine that you, like me, would get a real sense of motivation from seeing the numbers go down.

In addition to this, you will feel better. Maybe not immediately (we all go through the detox headaches etc) but after a few days or a week.....you will feel better.

I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart and I will keep you and everyone else on this forum in my prayers.....

God bless you and please reach out for help when you need it....

Do yourself a favor and try some of our low carb recipes for Thanksgiving and see if you just don't love them. We have pumpkin pie recipes, and the turkey and ham is legal and there are some great salad recipes. You don't have to commit, but at least try the food and see what you think. I'm sure your going to just love it

                    Re: Hi

                    Dear Friend Dontlookatme

We will "look at you" and we will love and help you!

I have dug out four true stories of women who once weighed 400+lbs and sent them to you (private messages). I hope you've worked out how to access your PMs!)

These women had eaten their way up to being 400 pounds plus, they had emotional issues, they had eating disorders, and yet they did it - they stuck to the low-carb way of eating and they have reduced weight and most importantly of all, they are now living life instead of being locked inside the misery of hopelessness which you have also described.

My only regret about Atkins is that I didn't start it when I first heard about it. Now I am kicking myself because I stayed locked in my own private h e l l for ten years longer than I needed to. Learn from my mistakes! Choose to live. Choose Atkins. We're all 100% behind you.

                    Lots of love

I wanna start right away before I've even finished the book but I really know there is a need to be firmly grounded in the rules if I am going to get very far. I am here tonight, actually, to look for Thanksgiving recipes. I wanna try them all out. I am happy about pumpkin being an option. Not so much about the Cauliflower. :shudders:

Anyway, I am already developing a strange attachment to this group here. I am very thankful for finding yall!
