Hello all - Canada here - Toronto - and I'm determined to drop 40 pounds. Started off today and it went a little weird - I think I had a total of 1250 calories??? There were 10.5 carbs and 87 gms of fat and I don't feel hungry but this is decidedly weird!

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
Well, I did Atkins for 6 weeks about 5 years ago - dropped 40 pounds - and generally kept the carbs at 12 to 15 a day. And yes, I realize that's a low calorie count - but maybe I need to add a couple of protein rich snacks - like 50 g of beef or an oz of cheese.

Wow. 40 pounds in 6 weeks! That's just amazing.
How many of them did you keep off?
>>generally kept the carbs at 12 to 15 a day.>>
While that's what you did, it's not how Atkins works ... at least according to the book.J.

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
It isn't? I read the book very thoroughly. Induction means staying under 20 and what I've read recently seems to mention a 12 to 18 carb range. I guess I'm just wondering where the rest of the calories will come from. 8 oz of meat/fish are about as much as I can handle at one meal.
One thing - the book talks about 2 cups of salad vegies; the web site mentions as many as 6 cups.

I think Atkinsgal is getting to the point of veggies. You can have up to 20 net grams of carbs a day. You can have 3 cups of veggies a day. 2 salad and 1 more dense veggie. They focus on here 11 grams a day in veggies. But I need to read that in the book again.
If I am wrong, anyone, chime in!

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
Well, I had three cups of salad veggies today - a mix of radicchio, arugula and romaine, so that's 2.7 net carbs. I had half a plum tomato so that's 1.1 and 5 asparagus so that's 2 more. Oh, and some lettuce - another 2. That's 7.8 and another 5 from eggs and salad dressing. So, 12.8 and I'm going to have a cheese snack. Frankly, I'd happily munch my way through 8 cups of salad a day and the 4 or 5 tablespoons of ceasars or ranch would help up the calorie count, no?? hehehe!!!

>>So, 12.8>>
Not enough for a day.
You need more nutritionally dense vegetables to get MOST of your daily net carbs from Induction vegetables, as Rule #3 says.
The point of 20 net carbs is that that's what Dr. Atkins found worked ... people will get in to ketosis and they'll still be getting enough nutrition.J.

The "website" you're referring to is Atkins.com, right? They're now using guidelines from the 2010 book, A New Atkins for a New You.
The book followed here is the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.J.

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
Ok - here's tomorrow's plan: Breakfast - 2oz smoked salmon, 2 eggs, 1/2 tomato, a little lettuce and 1/2 tbsp mayo Snack: 2 oz cooked pork Lunch - 6 oz crab meat, 1 cup salad greens, 1/2 tablespoon mayo, dash of dijon, 1/2 an avocado Dinner: Chicken breast with skin, 2 cups salad greens, 1 cup broccoli. Is that a good plan??

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
You should have 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list.
And avocado doesn't count as a vegetable.
Relying on lettuce and salad greens to get "most" of your daily net carbs is going to mean you're likely to be low on nutrition ... and net carbs.

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
Hey all! I'm new here too! I dropped 14 pounds in 8 days. I've been staying around 10 carbs a day. I haven't read the book....only learned through my friend who dropped 60 pounds in 3 months. I eat eggs with hot pepper cheese for breakfast, hot dogs with cheese for lunch. Grilled chicken with a small salad with oil/vinegar (not balsamic!) for dinner. I am a HUGE coffee addict, so I allow myself 2 cups of coffee with a teaspoon of heavy cream and half of a splenda for dessert. I will have a pickle or some olives for snacks. My hunger is satisfied and I'm definitely seeing results. Plus I've been exercising so I feel invigorated and motivated!

Are you going to change that?

That's not good.

This isn't a good day on Atkins.
>>I dropped 14 pounds in 8 days.>>
Atkins is also about eating healthy, which I'm not sure you are!

That doesn't mean your friend knows what Atkins is. Did your friend read the book?J.

Re: Doin' the introducin' thingie
Thanks to all for the input - and Hey! - I'm listening! I still think I'm going to go a little low on the carb totals for now, just in case I make some wrong assumptions. Still, had a great brunch omelette that included 2 0z or portabella mushroom and 1/3 of a plum tomato and a cup of radiccio/romaine - so that's 3.5 veg carbs in one meal!!
