  • Coconut Oil

Other boards have been talking about using coconut oil to help lose weight. Some folks say it helps with weight loss, some say their skin glows, others say their nails and hair look great.
I googled it and found this article
Coconut Oil & Diets on MedicineNet.com
but the guy who is saying it works is an ND, not am MD so I am still skeptical.
    Has anyone tried it?
    I'm up for anything.

    Re: Coconut Oil

I have also read the posts about coconut oil on other boards.

I've switched to using it to cook my eggs in and for sauteing. I don't think I am eating enough to trigger the reported weight loss benefits, because the number usually given is 3 tablespoons a day.

However, I am up for giving it a test run. Based on Dr. Atkins advice for slow losers -- UP the fat percentage -- I am consciously adding more fat. A lot of it has been mayonnaise, but I think I'm going to make a goal of getting in 3 tablespoons of coconut oil a day... just to see what happens.

I'll be interested in comments from others who have tried it at those levels.

Yeah, I've posted several times raving about coconut oil. I LOVE IT.

I think part of the reason people lose weight using it is because it really does help control glucose levels. Keep in mind, however, with our WOE, we already have that advantage! You will LOVE LOVE LOVE the energy boost you get from using this. I eat it straight off the spoon. It starts to melt as soon as it hits your throat.

Sunny, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how great you feel AND I really believe you might see more pounds take a hike!! It's not easy throwing a tablespoon of that waxy, chunky oil in your mouth and swallowing hard BUT I promise it gets easier to do. Soon, you'll want the energy burst so much, like an addict, that you're more than willing to eat it straight. Have a glass of water handy to wash it down!

          Re: Coconut Oil

Everlosing, do you use the kind that tastes like coconut, or the more highly refined one without the taste?

I got the tasteless kind because I thought it would work better in cooking.

Hmmmm, good question. I think there's a light slightly sweet taste to it, but I've never thought it really tasted like coconut. I get 16 ounce jars of Extra Virgin, Certified Organic Coconut Oil made by Emerald Laboratories. I order it online to save money BUT in a pinch, I've been able to pick up the same brand at GNC.

I really don't think you'll get enough of this just cooking with it. I take it straight. Just did it as a matter of fact. One tablespoon is ALOTTA solid oil, let me tell you! I had to wash it down with my other vitamins and supplements. Lots of water!!

                  Re: Coconut Oil

I must have the same kind that you do, Everlosing.

I just had a cup of vanilla chai tea with cream and added 1 teaspoon of the oil to it.

It was good.... and did the number on the little hunger rumbles that were starting.

                        Re: Coconut Oil

It's over 9.00 at Walmart -- you can find it either in the supplement aisle or with the cooking oils in the market area. I have looked at it a couple times but haven't bought it yet.

SunnySmile was the first person to talk about it that I heard. She raves about it. I love coconut but I don't know if I can do the tablespoon in my mouth thing!

I'm going to have to figure out what to do with the food I bought this morning (before I read we were re-doing induction) for the present and next rung I was going to.....the cottage cheese & yogurt will be bad before we're done....wish I would have known -- 7.00 down the drain.

                          Re: Coconut Oil

Carole, you don't have to restart induction right away. And if you are losing, you don't have to restart at all.

If you're losing slowly... like me.... it's a good time to re-evaluate your plan. With me, it was eating too many calories, even though the carbs and food were okay.

I think this forum was set up primarily for re-doing induction, but I plan to be here a long time after I finish mine. Because I know my metabolism is very slow, and I will always need to be a little more careful than most people.

                            Re: Coconut Oil

wow. i'm happy i did a search for coconut oil before posting a new thread. I actually bought a container of it today at walmart because i've heard a LOT of people use it on low carb diets - i'm trying to find recipes on exactly how to use it - i know a lot of people eat it "straight up" - but i think i'll just at first start using it to cook my eggs in. but i will also do some research on how to use it. :P

                              Re: Coconut Oil

My ex and I did a LOT of research before settling on this brand of coconut oil. The WalMart brands were NOT anything more than a low grade oil, you get what you pay for kind of thing. I can't remember the exact differences, was years ago but if I were going to do it, I'd get a good reputable manufacturer. The price at GNC.com is $12.99.

Emerald Laboratories Coconut Oil - EMERALD LABORATORIES - GNC

This is the best price I've ever see for this product although I don't know what their shipping costs. Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil 54oz | RawReform

iHerb.com - Product Details - Emerald Laboratories, Extra Virgin, Certified Organic Coconut Oil, 16 oz

I've only ever used the Emerald Laboratories brand and the Nutiva brand. They were both great. That Nutiva JUG is quite a deal and I'll be looking into that!!
