WOW-- what an amazing thread. Just taking time ot catch up. Living here in Maine, my gardening season is very short. I got my vegtable garden planted on Memorial day Weekend.

      I planted
      carrots
      green beans
      yellow beans
Beets--dont eat the beets but love the greens.
      gr peppers
20 -- YEH 20 tomatoe plants-- I love to can salsa and stewed tomatoes, spaghetti sauce you name it-- so fun-- messy but fun
      zuchinni
      summer squash
      cukes
      and pumpkins

this is quite a down size from what I normally do, but I just moved, soil is not the best, and space is limited. I have various flower gardens, mosly annuals as well. It is about all I can handle since my MS and the summer heat do not get along.

Well, everything has broken gound, I cant believe it, but we have had about 7 days of heavy hard rains, I hope they didntnot get beat to death, or do not rot. I would love to see pictures, and share my own. But, keep in mind here in Maine the gardening season is brief. It all comes,a dn goes so quickly:-(

one yr i a visitor who was a gardener ask what those were pointing to the lovely yellow flowered tall plant. I told her I was growing Okra. she said that is nice but what it that tall yellow flower there! OKRA!!! guess she decided not to plant it in her flower bed. LOL Veggies have beautiful flowers and if you stagger your planting you got flowers and color all yr too. I lve the red of bullsblood beet leaves, all those fancy lettuces the colored peppers and tomatoes add much color to the veggie garden.

Apparently you can enjoy the leaves of a lot of herbs & Veggies without killing the plant. Often those greens don't even make it to the store. What a waste!

Examples I'm eating as veggies and herbals in my yard now:
Valerian, Ginkgo, Horseradish, Beets, Onions, Garlic & Leeks; "volunteer" Spring onions, dandelions, violets & other wild lettuce & chard type weeds; carrots & parsnips (will eat the roots when I get to that rung); and the usual assortment of cooking herbs (chives, basil, rosemary, mint, oregano, parsley, thyme...).

LOL yep I grew bullsblood beets for 2 yrs before I was at the rung to eat the beet part. I just enjoyed the leaves as good induction veggies.

Swiss card rainbow will color a garden all summer long.

Even before this way of eating I was never a BEET fan, always loved the greens ... But, when such green can not be consumed and the beets grow, I have been known to pickle and can them. Family loves them with Thanksgiving dinners and such, fun to take out for guests, and church pickle sales.

For me, I will indulge in the greens with some butter and vinegar!! YUMMY!! Oh yeh, umm a tab of salt pork boiled in there too...

LOL I just thought of the beet as a bulb for the next crop of greens and left it in the ground to sprout over and over as I havested the tops for salad and veggies. tried it with carrots but didn't like the tops that much to waste my gaeden space on.

I never cared for beets either, until I tried them with cabbage & onions, with a homemade berry vinegar. Beleive it or not, that all started as a science experiment with Ph color changes I was doing with my son, turned 'Harry Potter magic potion', that turned out pretty tasty. The remaining beets are still in the barrel planter adding nice red-veined foliage below the tomatoes, next to the blooming scallions and carrots.

All kinds of Alliums (scallions, chives, garlic, elephant garlic, leeks, vidalia, yellow & red onions, even a few wild spring ones are allowed in my flower beds and veggie & herb gardens. The beets can be perennial, but the squirrels usually get them, sooner or later. When I've bought root veggies at the store, it's easy to save out something to stick in the ground. Look at the 10 cent taro root in my herb garden (looks like elephant ears)!

I have renewed motivation to garden ..when I went back to Providence this past week my grilfriend picked me up ....gave me great Portuguese wine to drink then took me on a tour of her garden...omg it was brilliant ..beautiful and gave me some insaney fun ideas for my own!!!! so today since I am on a pm shift ... am going to go weed my garden

then tomorrow a nice cutting of the grass and I will take some pics to show you what I have done so far...!!!! I am so excited ....

Boonie I love that pic I need to do that little rock circle thing and have a couple of perfect spots for it ...and the rocks!!!!

I am worried about my grapes they have grown so big I can not get under the arbor anymore..I under estimated how big they would grow and have to find a way to redirect them!!!!

I have the most stunning poppies you guys ..last year on walks around town I snagged some seed heads and just tossed them around ..and am I glad where they are coming up or what!!!!

the most horrible thing I have invading my garden is a toss up between the beautiful but invasive golden bamboo..the buttercups ...the morning glory...and English Ivy I can not stand them they creep into everything and are a bittch to get out!!!! I never planted them they were either attached to something someone gave me or found their way in from the neighbors ....

rats love English ivy and I hate rats!!! so it has to go!!!!

I am letting a small corner of blackberries grow ..this could be a huge mistake but these berries are wonderful so I want some in the yard and not on the road where the exhaust from the neighbors car gets them

I have been eating cherries every day!...and have tons of strawberries!!!! I am so excited at the flavors in both ...funny give up sugar and appreciate the natural sweetness in fruits and veggies that is one of the best things about eating this way is how good food tastes and how much I appreciate every single bite especially when I grow it myself

                          how are you guys doing...

Mog I saw your garden in your sig ..OMG it is so beautiful!!!!!

I had the most beatiful peach poppies blossomed the other day, the rain beat them to death before I could get a pict:-(

oh man I saw a great new to me garden techniqu on DIY they mounded up a about a 4 foot diameter hill of soil them used rocks to make a spiral from the top to the bottom and planted between the rings all kinds of herbs. Because it was mounded they had micro climate changes all in one bed a a bright hot south side a cooler shady northside. they put in over 20 different herbs and cooking stuff.

as long as we only harvest a few leaves from each beet pant each time it will grow all season and if nothing eats it they will come back the next yr too. Because you are pulling off the leaves it doesn't get giant sizes but it does get tough and woody so don't preharvet the leaves from any you want to eat.

Been soooo busy landscaping in front, back yard has slowly but surely been taken over! The violets are growing faster than I can dig them up. The clover & wild strarberries are literally running wild and vines are getting into everything. I don't believe in using chemicals unless absolutely necessary - to be good to local wildlife sharing my yard as well as the bay - but the yard is getting out of control. Any one got any foolproof suggestions for nailing the worst offenders, other than poison? Even digging them doesn't slow them down long.
