yep there is nothing like going out with your scissors and cutting the lettuce you want for your salad. get one of those mesulin mixes and in 35 days you are harvesting and will keep havesting until the weather gets too hot and it bolts but you can seed some more in aug or sept and havest till a hard frost. If you plant a tomato or pepper plant in the middle of the pot it will shade the lettuce and make it last even longer and with weather events making lettuce $4 a pound you can save money too.

I actually prefer to grow salad greens in containers than in the ground. For some reason, I just feel the greens are "cleaner"---ie: not dirty from the dirt (yeah, it's one of my hang-ups....) Plus, if you put your container on some cinder blocks on your doorstep, it's easier to harvest.

So do you use a soilless mix for your containers?

so here is my baby trillium

this is a shooting star both of these are natives and both need shade..something I do not have much of actually so I may keep them in pots for a while and see what happens

oh they are endargered here too and you can't did non native but we have a yard full in the back woods. What kind of trillum is it? read yellow or white upright or nodding head?

you can create all the shade they need by planting them in the shadow of an existing pot or tree.

LOL doesn't your shooting star look like leaf lettuce plants? I was sure somebody had dumped a pack of lettuce seeds in mothers woods when i saw them coming up this spring. those flowers on the tip of the spike are awesome.

No I don't...that's why it's just one of my hang-ups! For some reason soil on the ground seems "dirtier" to me than that same soil in a container. Yeah, yeah, I know...it's just me being crazy!

But I like the convenience of using containers for some veggies. Plus it covers up this eye-sore cement slab I have on my side yard. I don't know what the previous owners used it for, but it's a 4' x 10' rectangle--southeast facing. It gets alot of sun and the plants are happy there.

WOW! What a teriffic thread! I'm fairly new at ADBB, but as it just so happens, I love to grow things, so while emptying the house of induction no-no's, I ran across potatoes, onions, scallions, leeks, turnips, radishes, scallions, carrots, eggplant, parsnips, horseradish root and peppers which had gone soft and/or growing while I'd been fasting prior to deciding to do Atkins in Feb.

All of them are now growing happily, along with tomatoes and my regular herb garden residents.except the eggplant which went on the compost pile.

My big question is, do any of you know if the greens of the root veggies are induction-friendly?

Bulls blood??? I hope that's some kind of veggie!

Thanks for the tip on the greens. Anyone know if the carrot or parsnip tops are OK? (I know the alliums are & taters aren't).
The horseradish leaves are good, too.
Those shooting stars look a little bit like my bleeding hearts. Pretty neat!
I've got a crazy amarillus just opening its flowers in my back yard, and I'm waiting for my pink ladies' slipper to come up.
