      Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

I'm in Zone 7, but 20 miles North of me is the Zone 6. Sometimes, my area behaves like Zone 6 due to the way the geography of the place influences the weather pattern, sometimes it behaves like Zone 7.

so what is going on in your gardens? I need to spread moss killer that is for sure the green is deseptive in my lawn and on my roof!!!

my mini daffodils (the size of a crocus) are all up and very cute to look at
I see my plants starting to come to life and all my fruit trees have buds ..we are supposed to get another frost but it is not supposed to be a hard one..but I don't believe anything anyone says about the weather anyway ...ever....

I just keep planting and hoping no order that is for sure..I did let my dahlias winter in the garden with out a layer or straw ..because they rotted when I did that...digging them up is a huge pain in the asss!!!

I am telling you the biggest mistake I have ever made was planting cardoon it is taking over my yard!!! and competing with the golden bamboo for the most aggressive and annoying plant on the planet....I have to resort to round up because the roots are so damn deep!!!
the golden bamboo needs a trench and a metal barrier to keep it back it is getting scary now and
no MOG I never ate any but thanks for that research you did ...

so tell me all your garden news please I love thinking about getting dirty

time to go on my plant searching walks ..hey if it grows on to public property or over a fence on to the side walk...I can take a snip ....it is not theft it is "propagation" and I need to go propatate ...

              Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

I'm right on the line for zones 7-8.

We ripped up the broccoli, cabbage and the lettcues that just keep growing up last weekend and John tilled the garden..he's been dumping wood ash on it through out the winter so he wanted to get that mixed in. This weekend its susposed to be near 80 so we'll probably till again adding in some of our compost and some composted manure as well.

The only thing we're 100% positive that we're planting is lots of tomatos and hot peppers so I can make a few batches of homemade salsa to can again, we only have a few jars left so we're eating it sparingly right now. Of course I'll have to put in some fresh herbs and John says he'll allow me one Zuccini plant. Unfortunatley our garden is very small so we are pretty limited on what we can grow.

I noticed my Toad Lilies we peeking up out of the ground already! I love those plants! My Iris that mom gave me last year are already about 5 inches tall! Lots of things are just starting to peek up out of the ground!

I don't have any daffodil but they are blooming all over town as well as the pear trees, very pretty. Oh yea, and the Tulip tree that I pass on my way to work is in full bloom as well, very pretty!

I'm a 7 curled in a 6 So sometimes the 6 expands into us and things get hurt.

We had a snow advisory for Friday and it was chilly Sat but we are back up in the 60s headed to 70s again. MOG have you looked at container gardening your greens and small roots? there is a great story about a pass along wicker basket container veggie gargen in the Senior mag for the Baptists last month. Has directions for making one too. thry lined a wicker basket with a handle with plastic added potting soil and then planted salad veggies and miniature marigolds for insect control and when it grew gave it with the seed packets to someone in need of a lift and they harvested it replanted and passed it to the next person

Over the weekend, I began prepping my containers. I also covered them with black plastic to warm up the soil enough so I can at least begin sowing the spring stuff.....

Now that is a really cool idea! I never thought of using a basket! We tried growing tomatos in containers but it didn't work out too well. We had to water them twice a day and didn't end up getting many tomatos in the end. We've got a great little spot for a garden beside the house! It gets full sun and it is also protected from the winds when we get storms! I just wish it was a lot bigger!

I may have to try growing some salad veggies that way! I'll see if I can find a big basket cheap somewhere! Those big containers they sell (that look like 1/2 of a wooden barrel) are way too expensive for me to consider! Especially since I have to buy dirt to put in them as well, but a cheap baske might be just the trick! Thanks for the idea!

Hey 2big, we could probably do that with the garden as well, never thought of warming up the soil like that! That's a good idea as well!

Mog they have some dwarf tomato plants you can container plant in that basket. the tomatoes in a bucket always need more water cause they get warmer soil and no place to drink other then what we add to them. Mine need a gallon a day. oh and be sure you line the basket with like a garbage bag type plastic so it will not leak and rot the basket.

I always cook my empty plots to kill the bad bugs with black plaistic. you can get a weed block black one too that will let heat and water in but not let anything copme up. for cool weather planting I love my floating row covers but they are at my house wonder if I could borrow them from the Katrinia folk living there now.

Has anyone ever tried those "watering spikes"? They look like long orange carrots that you attach to a liter bottle and stick into the ground.

Yea, I've seen that stuff that you put on the garden to kill the weeds. We had more than 1/2 of the garden planted with broccoli, cabbage and lettuces over the winter though so I would only have been able to cover 1/2 of it even if we had done it.

I only have to water once in a while anymore now that my plants are established ..I have seen the water spikes but I have also seen a 1 litre soda bottle on a copper coil thing that is the same thing I think? you poke holes in the lid of the soda bottle and then one in the other end and turn it upside down and put the topside down into the coil that is stuck in the ground ..it looked like a cool way to use those plastic bottles up

I used a resivoir once to water but the animals chewed the tubing and leaked it where I didn't need it. I got soaker hoses now all over and just hook up the hose to the end and let it drip when the rain don't come.
