MOG those BLACK Heirlooms are great but I had insect issues with them so be carefulto inspect your plants often. For some reason they were the only ones the deer didn't bite when they got in the garden in 2004.

LOL, well we don' t have any deer issues in my neighborhood. But the squirrels will steal the tomatos if we don't watch out! The thing I hate about that is they will take one little bite then throw them down in the yard. grrrr

              Upside down tomatoes?

I've been reading about this... and was wondering if any of you had ever tried growing tomatoes upside down?

Basically, you cut a hole in the bottom of a bucket, just big enough to get the plant through, then you fill the bucket with soil, etc... hang it where the plant is coming out the bottom. There's no weeding, you can move it, etc. I was thinking of giving this a try this year.

So, if any of you have experience with it, I'd ilke to know how it went.

              Thanks!

Calling it GOAL at this point. I'm happy with where I am now and hope to stay there, or maybe even take it down a little more.

I merged ThickRick's tomato thread into this one.

Anyhow, I guess if you grow them upside down, you'll need to use spaghum moss to keep the dirt from falling out of the tomato hole?

                  Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

You'd have to use something. Cause the stem of the plant needs room to grow so in the beginning the hole would have to be big enough to accomidate the later growth. I don't really have anywhere that's tall/big enough to hang a mature tomato plant so i don't think I'll be trying this, but if anyone does I'd love to know how it turned out! Our tomato plants were over 6 feet high last year!

                    Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

tomato stems grow toward light so they would curl back up around the bucket. I've seen folk use 5 gallon buckets full of dirt and grow tomoatoes up right but the fellow in our city said he has to give the mators about a gallon of water a day in the summer cause of all the evaporation and heat.

                      Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

I needed a break...so I am looking for some of our old recipes....Pau's pressure cooker pork loin is going to happen here today

I am so excited we have finally had some sunny days

...lime in the garden to raise the pH will keep the toxic heavy metal in the soil...I just found that out I was worried ..now I am not ..I had my rhubarb tested last year and other than being a tiny bit high in zinc it tested clean!!!

so lime is down today and peas are planted..( I know a week early but I am embracing the moment of sunshine before it is whisked away by more rain!!) ....

my bulbs are all about four inches high

and this is year three on my herbs and perennials so I am thinking some parts of my garden will be stunning this year

oh and one more thing..did I mention I had an Anna's hummingbird in my garden all winter I am beside myself ..he is the cutest most resilliant little shiit I have ever seen ...my husband the bird nerd says he lived on bugs all winter down in the bamboo!!!

He keeps looking in the window at me kind of discouraged... I think it is time for him to have some sugar water...

I am sure he does not count calories or carbs!!!

                        Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

WOW a humming bird all winter cool. Mother has 3 in the summer and fall but haven't seen them this winter. they love her flowers.

oh man we had a hard hard freeze below 20 to go with the snow and now I'm not sure what will come back. I have greens and letuce soup in theleaf pots. Even the collards that taste better after the frost turned slimey on parts. the rosemary and the garlic look okay though.

Anybody use those watercolumn early bird plastic things?

I've seen those water column things, but I haven't tried it.

I'm just happy I harvested the last of my lettuce before someone dumped all that snow on it this weekend.

My neighbor's daffodils are up and some of them are blooming due to the really mild January and early February. However, we've had freezing temperatures this week and will have them next week. I've decided to put off my early planting until mid-March or until the temps stabilize enough that I don't have to worry about ice storms and blizzards!
