    Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

The weather has been really mild this winter. Anyhow, in the late summer, I planted a couple of boxes of lettuce--red oak leaf, green leaf and mache. To my surprize, they are still alive! I thought the snow and ice we had in November and December killed them. Anyhow, I have enough "baby" lettuces for several salads!

My lettcues are growing like mad still, BUT they have become tough and bitter unfortunaley, even though they look yummy.

BUT, check this out! We were going to pull the broccoli and cabbage plants cause they didn't look like they were going to produce..but low and behold! We're having fresh broccoli for dinner tonite!

That's cool 2big. We actually finished the last of our tomatos very close to Christmas as well, but we had pulled all the green ones before the freeze and had them ripening in the window, they were actually pretty good. Normally I don't like window ripened ones but they were not bad, still better than the grocery store!

                Re: Low Carb Garden 2006!

Yesterday I was at Walmart (yes, I know....Walmart + Saturday morning = chaos and insanity) and I bought several Burpee seed packets: an heirloom string bean, cilantro, Italian parsley, Yellow Bantam corn and snow peas. I also picked up a couple of packets of Johnny-Jump Ups and nasturtiums. All for about 97 cents per packet. I'll have to mail-order for the other seeds, like the mache and arugula.

My corn hardly forms ears and when they do, the caterpillars get them. But I grow it because I like the look the corn stalks give my garden.

we have something called corn earworms that eat the corn and look disgusting. Supposedly you can put paper bags on the ears after the ears start and not get them if you don't want to use chemicals.

I got some Cherokee tomato seeds and am going to see if I can get them to grow at mothers. they are native to this area so hopefully they will do well out back of her forrest.

That's what happens to my corn. But, since I grow it for "the look", I don't get stressed out about it. Now if I was growing it to eat the corn, I kick those little bug rear-ends! lol.

Your Walmart doesn't carry seeds 2Big? There are about 3 Walmarts with 10 miles of each other here and they all carry seeds and other garden supplies.

Anyhow, I stuck using seeds for the majority of my gardening....I don't have much luck transplanting. I was over the moon with joy when those strawberry transplants took a few years ago.

Another ADBB member sent me some flower bulbs and seeds and some Black Heirlom tomato plant seeds! I'm so excited, I've never grown any heriloom tomatos!

Our Walmart carries seeds and plants once the garden season is here. That's where I got my Mexi-bells plants last year and also my cabbage and my broccoli!

Strange! The Walmart here has a few heirloom seeds: the corn and beans I bought, a pumpkin, two kinds of tomatoes, and a couple of flowers. There wasn't a huge selection, but they had some at least.
