Seed swap does sound like a great idea - or a plant swap, if anyone like me wants assurance against the critters. Too often the seeds I plant, feed and water for weeks get eaten by something before they can sprout, or soon after emerging from the ground. Could that be what happened to your sunflowers MOG?

I've got lots of extra plants here - mint, ivy, virginia creeper, japanese maples, ginko trees, iris, columbine (red, pink & white), sunchoke, black-eyed susans, & blue azuratum (sp?)

Heidi 3, with the price of tomatoes at 2.50/lb here, and the pulpy taste, I doubt I'll ever buy them from a store again! They are so easy to grow, I've got them coming up in the mulch pile where I tossed a few bad ones last year. And peppers are just as easy. All it should cost is the price of water. Use the seed from what's in your salad, add to some compost in the sun and keep moist. If I leave town in the summer, I fill a sturdy 2-liter bottle with water, cap it, poke hole in bottom with ice pick and sit it by the plant. So long as the bottle is thick enough to not collapse, daily temperature fluctuations cause a little water to come out each hot day.

I'm trying to grow 2 olive trees. Only 3 more years before they should fruit!

Nope Boonie the critters didn't get them, I had them in seed starter pots in the house, they just never came up. You can always start your seeds indoors if you want plants, that's what we do with most seeds.

Heidi, if I had to eat a store bought tomato I'd gag! They're not even the same animal as a homegrown.

Farmers Market this past Sat. were actually selling green tomatoes for $2.50/lb! It tempted me an awful lot, cuz had run out of my frozen homegrown stash of tomatoes last week, and have been reluctant to pick any more of my new crop green. But they'll taste ever so much better, the more I have to drool in anticipation for the day they're ready to pick.

I'm hoping there will be volunteer tomatoes in the herb garden from the heirlooms I had there last year. I've let that bed grow wild this spring, and just been picking onions, leeks and mint around the edges. Somewhere beneath the wild grape vines in there - I've got a LOT of weeding to do when get back from vacation.

bulbs and seeds exchange how cool we must do this!!! I just do not have any yet they need to dry out a bit so I can send them....

I want to call in today the sun is shining and my garden needs SSSOOOOOO much work I weeded a pile as tall as I am ..or should I say as short as I am!!!! it took me almost four hours to weed one bed it was so bad....1/2 the lawn is cut ...the one good thing about living on this hill is EVERYTHING I do in the garden involveds climbing up and down the hill to haul/mow/rake whatever ...

so the past few days while busting my asss I have put everything I ate and did in the yard and house into fitday ..something I rarely do ..and realized I have burned twice what I have eaten
and I eat a lot ....that was validating for sure...I hate counting anything but it is kind of fun once in a while to just see where I am in life ...and all I can say when it comes to yardwork and working on this house you can....

That sucks Heidi. My most favorite part of summer anymore is the fresh tomatos.

I'd be happy to take some bulbs off your hands bsj, I love a good mystery!

Oh Boonie, I'm having to restrain myself from picking the green ones right now. I love fried green tomatos and that breading recipe that Barb posted would be perfect for those.

This will probably be my last post here until July 5, unless my cousin bring his PC to the beach. My garden will be on it's own too, so hopefully it will rain some. I take porch plants to the shade and some I sit in my artificial stream where they're in 2-3" deep water. The tomato plants each get their own water jug with a pinhole to leak on them every day. I hope they will have red maters when I get back! *drooling*

my tomoto issues are with all the volunteers that come up cause we compost the vines in the bed since tomotes love to grow on old tomatoe vines. I got 9 vols big enough to be keepers so far and not a clue as to which varitety they are well I do know they are not the tangerine or the red cheery cause the maters are too big.

It has been in the 90s over 2 weeks now and this new black seed Simpson lettuce is still growing strong. looks like a dang topiary bed with all the outer leaf picking I have done. Mother is so cute cause she has fallen in love with the bright deep red bulls blood leaves and doesn't want me to harvest any cause they look so nice.
