    That's cool boonie!

I did have to pull up my zuccini plant yesterday. It was rotting from all the friggin rain we've had/are having! We got another 1/2 inch just since midnight! And its going to rain all day they said up to 3 inches. Man last year we were begging for rain, doing rain dances and everything, this year we've had so much its drowning everything.

Anyway, John and I dug up that volunteer - we think its a cucumber, we'll see, we put it where the zuccini was.

Well, Heidi, thems the breaks with gardening/farming---you're at the mercy of Mother Nature! If it isn't too much rain, it's no rain at all (plus water restrictions). If it ain't the water, then it's the bugs. If it ain't the bugs, then it's the slugs, deer and rabbits. If it's not them, then it's the dratty neighhor kids who insist on using your vegetable/flower beds as their personal playpens.

On the positive side, a friend gave me some Asian yard long beans last week. Over the weekend, I tossed them in a planter and now they're growing. Granted I won't be harvesting any beans, but I think the plants will look lovely on a trellis.

or slugs !!!!! I had tons last year and this year I have beautiful garden snakes ....I am thinking they are eating my slugs because I have not seen one slug anywhere

I love seeing snakes in the garden here
              1. because we do not have any poisonous ones here where I live
              2. because they eat rodents and seem to eat slugs!!!!

Heidi, John brings snakes home when he finds them, and puts them in our garden! We do have poisonous ones here, but thankfully he knows his snakes!

wow MOG I've never seen green habeneros mine are bright orange.

I wish we had rain. we just got a nice soaking all night for the first real rain in over a monthbut we are still over 5 inches down for the area. We have those spotty afternoon pop up thundershowers but some how all the do is drop a few sprinkles at Mother's and drown other parts of town for 15 min every day.

Our greens bolted so it it tomatoes okara peppers and swiss chard only now along with the herbs. Can y'all smeel the garlic? I harvested the garlic on the 4th and went way overboard eating it I'm glad I'm not an inductee cause I'd have been posting a I cheated topic from all the garlic cloves i had. I've been watching a young deer eyeing the veggies every morning. He better not decide to taste my tomotoes!

I've learned to recognize snakes too....however, not the kind without legs.

Scarlet runner beans---I tried growing those about 4 years ago. They didn't grow for me.

We keep waiting for them to turn yellow or orange but they just keep getting bigger instead! We left a ton of them on the plant and are hoping they will turn! But they're not susposed to get bigger and bigger! At least none I've ever seen are bigger than ours already are. I don't know what's up with that, they are hotter than the dicken's though, even green!

I always wanted to grow garlic. When do you put your's in the ground 2big?

                          2Big, garlic doesn't get limited, only counted - it's a spice?
Heidi - back to ya... can you send me a couple those snakes - will feed 'em real good - my frogs and birds aren't doing slugs.
Hey - you can EAT grapevine leaves?!? How may carbs would that be? What do they taste like, the wild ones are all over the place here.
MOG - I've seen the habaneros in green, orange, red & yellow. They change the longer they ripen, even after picked unless dried or frozen. I've got tiny purple peppers that do the same thing but are never green.

I was reading about peppers and their colors the other day. Because I was curious about my cayennes which are also green (we've had a couple of red ones) The sources I found said that they are green for the summer harvest and red/orange for the fall harvest. I piced some habeneros and I'll see if they change, they're on the windowsill. I have a bunch left on the plant as well that I'm watching.

One thing I know is, you get more peppers if you keep them picked (ie., before they sit ripe on the plant for long). I've had the purple pepper plants bear purple, yellow, orange, red and even white peppers all at the same time, then production fell way off. New flowers form when the plant thinks it is'nt currently growing seeds. This applies to a lot of other veggies as well.
