Heidi, I've only seen Broad Beans in the frozen veggies section at the supermarket. I've never seen fresh...

      brussel sprouts ick, ick, ick!

I remember being a kid and my mom would make these all the time. I absolutely hate them. She wouldn't let us leave the table until everything on our plate was empty "There is starving children in Ethopia you know" so I would sit there for HOURS and HOURS with them packed in my cheeks like a chipmunk. She would finally give in and let me spit them out. Determination of a 6 year old works everytime...or did it?

How did your mom cook Brussels Sprouts? I had an auntie who used to boil them until they were a weird brown-green color. They were smelled awful and were completely bitter and unedible.

I found that if you cook them until they turn a bright green, they have a marvelous spicy cabbage-like flavor.

You had it easy! We ate everything on our plates or you would get it served to you again for BREAKFAST! and they would keep putting that plate in front of you for every meal until you ate it! And we did not have microwaves back then so it would be cold from the fridge! I can remember many a breakfasts of cold liver and onions! You think brussel sprouts are bad, try that! GAG

Brussel Sprouts are much like mushrooms IMHO, Kids hate them, but when they grow up they become more palatable.

Mushrooms and Sprouts are two of my favourites now.

                  Re: dinner time?

I was at the library today and I borrowed a Spanish cooking book. There's a recipe in it for a seafood salad: shrimp, fresh red bell peppers, alittle onion, tossed with a lemon-olive oil dressing. I'm gonna have to try it when I get back home from my seminar this week.

There's also a really interesting recipe for oranges---segment the oranges, sprinkle with coarse salt and drizzle on some flavorful extra virgin olive oil. It sounds unusual but I'll give that a try too.

Ok I love this thread...look what I have gleened

I am stopping at the fish market and getting some seafood ... a fresh lemon and I have some wonderful Spanish olive oil...I think what I will do is add an avocado to this ...

Megs as a kid I used to eat fresh sliced oranges with salt pepper and fresh garlic on them ..I am not sure how that evolved in my life but I believe it was the Caribbean influence in my childhood....
