Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

I would like to join in the challenge. I have NEVER been a runner but I find that walking gets boring for me so I quit early. I think that this challenge is a perfect way to keep my mind occupied. (with the timing etc) and work my body at the same time.

I have a question for those of you who have been doing this. Do you use a stop watch to keep track of the time or do you just estimate it? I think once I'm at it a while, I will be able to judge the amount of time by how far I've gone but in the beginning, I think I may need some assistance.

I will be starting on Monday, January 7 full speed. I have been walking about a mile or so for the past 2 1/2 weeks, so hopefully that will help!

I can't believe I will be able to run 3 miles. I don't know if I have ever done that before! I am so excited!!
You did yourself, and your body, a favor by walking. That will help!

Yes, you will be able to run 3 miles. Just listen to your body and take your time.

Did you get your first run in today, yet?

Welcome to the Challenge! I was never a runner before starting this either. The timing will indeed keep your mind occupied. In fact -- on some days you will be praying for the time to be up, ROFL

I can only speak for myself, but when I started this, I did it on the treadmill. It was easier for me to do the minute increments that way -- all I had to do was look at the screen on the treadmill. After several weeks, when the program has you running for longer increments, I used my watch and hit the streets.

Do you have an Ipod? If so, there is something called a "podcast" that tells you when to run or walk. I am technically challenged (got my first MP3 player for this past Christmas), so I don't know much about it. But, I can look up the info for you, if you want it.

Not yet, as it is only 7:45 here on the West Coast. My 7 year old has a fever and has to stay home from school today, so I will be hitting the gym later this afternoon when older kiddos come home.

I hope that all that walking that I did will help. I am excited to start this, just wish it wasn't snowing and daughter wasn't sick....but I won't let that deter me!!

You have to take care of your daughter -- I agree. I just looked at where you live, you did get hit with quite a bit of snow, didn't you?

The C25K program will still be here this afternoon, tonight, heck even tomorrow if that is when you can get to it. The point is -- this program is all about YOU. It would be nonsense to try to run outside in the snow.

Hope your daughter is feeling better soon!

Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

              Well, I DID IT!!!

Amazing that I just got done running 1/2 mile and walking the other half! Before, it would take me about 30 minutes to walk a mile, but today was better - only 20 minutes!!

So, somethings I learned in my little stint running.....

#1 - Wear a sports bra. Now mind you, the sisters aren't huge, but I feel that I am going to stretch them down to my knees (they are at my waist now ROFL). Also, I think it might slow me down....

#2 - Tie my shoes tight....I kept stopping to tie them tighter...weird...

#3 - It actually got easier the further I ran....maybe I was on a high that I was running, I'm not sure, but I didn't get too winded or hurt at all!

April of 2007, I broke my foot, and if you would have asked me if in a year I'd be running, I would have called you a liar....So this is huge!!

Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

Oh and yeah, we got about 3 inches last night/today, supposed to get another 2-3 inches tonight and ANOTHER 4 tomorrow, so I will be doing all my running at the gym.

7 year old is pretty sick....Dr. said she "crackles" when she breathes so she is on some meds and hopefully will be able to go back to school on Wednesday (when I run again).

Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

Ok - so I did my first day yesterday. The weather here is georgeous (sorry SoccerMom!) so I took advantage.

I can't say that I loved it but I am not sure if that is because running might not be my thing or if I am so terribly out of shape! I think it may be more the out of shape thing then anything else. So I kept reminding myself that I didn't get fat overnight and I won't get thin overnight either. It's going to take time and tenacity.

I have told several friends at work about it and I think they may join me in the training (even if they aren't on board with Atkins). Maybe they will be when they see the new slimmer me in a few months!

I have done week one 3 times now, but I have to say that I do not think I can go on to week two yet. Has anyone else here ever had to repeat week one? I am running outside and by the 5th run I am soooo out of breath! I'm wondering if I should do this on a treadmill instead. Has anyone else had a problem with week one before? Thanks!

Congratulations on your run! You actually went pretty far. What week of the C25K are you on? How are you feeling today?

Your #1 comment, well, I have to wear 2 when I run.

Your #3 comment, you are going to have days like this -- when you could run forever. You will most likely have days that your run will be a struggle. I'm glad you enjoyed this one so much.

It would be terrific if you had some friends join you. You can all commiserate together!

I didn't love running when I started. I still don't love it when I first go out. It is actually somewhat of an addiction now. Just remember to GO SLOW! You should be able to hold a conversation while you are running. If it was too hard for you, maybe you were going too fast?

Madeline, it is absolutely 110% ok to repeat a week as often as you have to. This challenge is all about YOU.

Take your time and run slowly. You should be running at an easy pace, not so that you are breathless. Are you following the recommendations for week 1? I was anal about following exactly what they recommended you do. That way you don't burn-out, or get injured or frustrated.

I don't understand something, you are saying by "the 5th run I am out of breath", I'm confused what do you mean by the 5th run? Are you alternating your days? I don't run 5 days in a row straight. I'm not sure if that is what you meant. If you are running 5 days in a row, I can see why you would be exhausted.

So today is a different sotry.....

My legs are sore and the muscles feel tight AND had leg cramps all night, but I guess it's the price that I must pay! Any ideas on how to help/prevent the tightness and cramps?

I am only on day 1 of week 1....but I think that all the walking that I did helped me be able to run farther than I normally would have.

Tomorrow is my run day again, I think I'm going to have to go at 5:00 am because it is grocery shopping day and my oldest has an indoor soccer game at 5:40 - her "friend that is a boy" (she is not allowed to date until 16) is coming over after school to go to the soccer game with us.

I will check back and let you know how that goes.

I think she means the 5th rotation in the run .......... as in 1 min run 90 sec walk ...........

Madeline I can totally relate when I first joined the program I thought I was gonna die ........ I did week one for three weeks before I moved on ........ I was afraid to even then but I did and I was amazed that it wasn't that much harder to push through an extra 30 seconds at that point.

I have done both the treadmil and outside and for me the treadmill is harder ....... but everyone is different.

Just keep on keeping on you can do it!!!!!!!
