Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

Hello all, I just wanted to check in and say hello! I'm still doing week one of the program but I am feeling really good about it! I've convinced my mom and sister to follow it as well! My sister lives in San Francisco, my mom is in Atlanta and I'm in London but we are all going to be together over the 4th of July and we are signing up for a run to do together! It feels like a wonderful new tradition that my family can do instead of our normal food based ones!

Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

      Good evening all.

Floyd - My knees aren't in a great deal of pain but I notice a little twinge now and again when I am sitting on the couch (I sit indian style). I never had that until I ran on Sunday. The Cool Running site said that it could be that I am running on an uneven surface. I noticed tonight that our roads are higher in the center than on the shoulder. So tomorrow, I run in the middle of the road. I'll just take the less popular streets! Wish me luck.

Just finished W2D3. I am a little discouraged so excuse my rant. I feel like it is still so hard. My legs hurt the entire time I am running! Floyd, at what point does this get easier?

Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

I am doing Week 2 again. I ran last night and noticed that I was running kind of "slouched over". So, I concentrated on straightening my posture and what do you know, my knees did not hurt. The fronts of my legs didn't hurt. My butt and hips hurt! But that is where most of the running sites say that a runner feels it most. So maybe my posture is the culprit of the knee issue.

I guess I can be thankful that all of my muscle groups are taking turns at being equal opportunity offenders!

So, am I all alone in this challenge now? I don't see too many posts.

At least you have good engineers. Roads are supposed to be designed like that so the water from the apex at the center towards the gutters. I'm not that smart, my friend is a civil engineer and she designs freeways and overpasses. Running in the center is an option, I just wouldn't wear headphones...

I am here. I am just hanging out and watching. I know I am not ready to start running yet. I hate running but it fascinates me and I want to do it. My daughter started the program. She runs on Tues, Thurs, and Sun. I am glad you figured out your problem, I too have bad posture when I walk a lot or run. Also, any alteration in gait will affect your knees first. I got a piece of glass in my foot and I walked funny on my foot and it only took like a good day or so of walking before the inside of my knee became really tender and painful. Keep up the good work! Don't be discouraged.

Re: New Couch To 5 K Program

Porcelain - thanks for keeping me company! I have started running in the middle of the street. It's just around the neighborhood so I am not to worried about being hit by a car. I also run with a light so cars can see me.

I noticed in my regular shoes that the heel of my left shoe is really worn on the outside. Much more than my right shoe. I have a heel spur in that foot that doesn't bother me too much but I wonder if it's causing a slight alteration in the gait.

I ran today with my co-worker. We met at the running trail and boy what a difference! I don't know if it was the fact that I had company, or the flat surface. I was really able to push myself and I wasn't counting the seconds like I normally do. My muscles were sore (as usual) but not unbearable. We pushed the last cycle of running to 2 minutes. It's so nice to have someone to go through this with!

We are really nervous about the 5K in April but we are still going to make the attempt.

                Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.

I got my swimming in today 1100 yards after I walked a half mile. I think after my six week challenge I will try this. I still get winded at my half mile. I just have no whatsitcalled..endurance. Ye, that's it. I was also going to get that exercise bra when my husband got paid but he was supposed to be paid on the 15th and his boss hasn't paid anybody! Twelve days late. Very stress provoking since I don't have a job since I am back in school.

Kislandmom, you are going to have good days and bad days. Hopefully the good outweighs the bad.

I saw in another post about how your shoes are wearing. I encourage you to go to a running store and get their advise on sneakers. I'm not saying you have to buy them there, just get an idea of what they recommend. Trust me, the right shoes make ALL the difference.

So glad to see that you are continuing to run, no matter what obstacles are in your way!

Porcelain, that is what makes this C25k so attractive. They don't ask you to go out and run a mile on your first day. They slowly break you into running, and the endurance does come!

I don't want to use this as an excuse really but I have fibromyalgia and the swimming is actually giving me a lot of pain. I want to get that under control more before I start something new. I must say, the thought of running that much does scare me but it is gradual like you say and it is only 3 days a week. I hope you don't mind me hanging 'round the board until my six week exercise challenge is up at the end of February! I enjoy seeing everyone's progress and hearing also about their difficulties.

                            Thanks!

It can be disheartening but at least now, due to the research study I am in, I am at least getting sleep now! That makes a major difference.

My treadmill is getting a lot of use. Me, my daughter, and I am rehabbing my mother. She just got out of the hospital so I am trying to fatten and toughen her back up. I would get her to do the couch to 5k program but she is 79 and really doesn't go over 1 mile per hour.

                            lol

Porcelain - you really have your hands full! Make sure you are taking time out for yourself.

So, I did week 2 twice (just finished day 3 today). Today was probably the toughest one yet! I was thinking that maybe it is because TOM is around the corner and I had cramps when I started out. Then I was talking to my friend who is doing this with me. She said that she read on the running site that running is harder on someone who is eating a low carb diet? My appetite has been really low lately and thinking back, today I ate 2 eggs for breakfast, a hard boiled egg and a green pepper for lunch and nothing else before my run. Perhaps I need to beef up the calories/protein on a run day?

If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

                              Still not giving up though.

Hi Kisland! From my own personal experience, I do find that TOM does affect how I feel after I have ran.

I've heard all kinds of things about a lowcarb diet/versus running. I personally am much hungrier on running days. Do you eat a little snack before you run? My hairstylist, who is an avid marathon runner, also mentioned that she heard lowcarb is harder for runners. You have to consider, in my opinion, what is their definition of lowcarb? I mean, we do eat carbs, just the complex carbs. So, it's not like we aren't eating any carbs.

I really don't have a good answer for your question. Unlike you, I am much hungrier when I run than on days that I don't run. I have other issues that effect me, though (I'm diabetic). Sometimes I find, again my opinion, that it is more important what you eat and drink the day BEFORE a running day. But then again, I am an early morning runner.
