Re: Cool Running for the week of July 17, 2005
Hey Jim,
Interesting experiment you did there. I definitely know what you mean about running the last part of the race only. I do this all the time, and the people I run with, or my family watching at the finish line, will say, "How come you didn't run the whole thing like that?" It's not only that I'm going faster, but it feels more comfortable and I actually feel like a runner, and not just like I'm plunking away (which is usually how I run the first 99% of the race).
About the stride though, I thought that shorter strides were better than longer strides. I looked it up on cool running and found this thread:

I guess I'll be measuring my strides per minute on my next run.

There are many threads that discussed the magical 180 strides per minute....I don't think there's anything special with the number 180, but it does represent a "sweet spot" where you expend the least amount of energy propelling yourself forward.
Running is faster walking with shorter strides as well as falling forwards. The tendency is to leap with longer strides therefore expending excess energy and more vertical movement.

Too busy eating junk foods and chasing boys!!!!!!!!!
I like to run slow and notice things; birds, plants, bugs! Today I met up with a rather large gopher tortoise which was a treat! He was a pretty fast little booger! Kept up with me for a few steps!
I burned 1,240 calories, 20% fat. Woohoo! Stopped in to McDonalds for a refill of ice water ... gad the smell of that greasy crap food was enough to make me sick. Seriously!! I just happened to note the size of the folks waiting in line as they stared me up and down being in there dressed in my sports bra and shorts ... I wanted to scream "I wouldn't eat that crap on a bet* ...
