Re: Cool Running for the week of August 7, 2005

Six miles this morning. I am feeling much better. I ordered a hrm. Can't wait to see how many calories I am burning!!!

Sarah, until you can get to a specialty store, grab some vasaline and slather it on.

Great job everyone, I have to go. I spent the morning getting my darn internet to work, now I have to go do my chores.

Re: Cool Running for the week of August 7, 2005

Today was a great running day I was still a bit stiff but, it didn't stop me from enjoying myself. I went 4.53 miles in 60 minutes and another .47 walking so 5 miles here today. I took 8 minutes off my time so I was very happy. I could have jogged further but, I didn't want to push my luck better slow and steady now that I am feeling well.

Tomorrow is a 2 mile run followed by weights I'm gunna put the treadmill on incline so I get my legs more used to that I need a lot of work on hills.

Re: Cool Running for the week of August 7, 2005

        Hi all,
I haven't really run since last Tuesday. I did a half-assed job on Friday (mostly ended up walking), and haven't done ANYTHING at all since.

I have a million excuses, like I'm too tired, I'm too busy with work, but I think the real reason is that I'm hitting burn out. I'm looking at my training schedule for this half marathon, and I'm feeling overwhelmed. I could probably do it if I had to, but that's just it, I don't have to.

I've been reading these other posts by people who are just starting to run, including FightingTheFight's C25K journal thread, and I'm finding that I'm jealous of them. I want to take it slow and steady! I want to feel like I'm accomplishing things at the end of every week! Instead, I run 3 days a week including a long run, but I still feel like it's not enough.

So, I hate to say this, but I think I need to drop the half from my calendar. I'm not totally disappointed, as I knew it was sort of a pie-in-the-sky plan. I want to keep doing a long run every week, but I think for the other days I'm just going to take it slow and see what my body responds to. I might find a 5 or 10K if I start to feel ambitious again

        Happy Running All!

          Effie,

Its OKAY!! The point of running (or any exercise) is to find something enjoyable. When your training becomes something you dread or feel burned out from, then stepping back is absolutely the RIGHT THING to do. The main thing is, you're still gonna be running .. the long-term goal of a halfer will always be there waiting for you when you're ready. Sheesh, girlie, its taken me nearly 2 years to work up to thinking about a halfer!! I know you'll get there! In the mean time, just run for FUN and FITNESS!

Effie, I am glad you are listening to your body instead of beating it up. And Betty is right, the most important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing. One of the reasons I don't go by a "schedule" is because I kind of like to wing it with most of the things I do in life. I have a goal, but not a specific plan to get there. This makes my hubby (a list person) crazy. But I am always at the finish line--of a project or goal-- and that is what counts. Keep on trucking and do the half when you are ready, next year, or the next.

              6 miles this morning. S_L_O_W.

              see ya on the road!!

Re: Cool Running for the week of August 7, 2005

I really want to become a runner, but I'm not so sure I'll ever be able to. The few times I've tried the walk/jog interval stuff, I encounter a little problem (guys, feel free to stop reading) - the urge to pee! It's from the pounding, because it happens when I'm working out with my trainer and she has me do any kind of jumping/bouncing stuff. I'm not gonna give up, but I just don't know what to do about this problem. Luckily, my sister lives around a couple of corners from me, and I made a mad dash to her house when the urge hit.

                How embarassing.

Effie, if it's any consolation it's not always a great feeling of accomplishment even when you're on a plan! Take me, for example. I was supposed to start Week 7 of the C25K plan last night, but I did Week 6B instead. I was just so worn out that I warmed up for 10 minutes then jogged for 20 and walked another mile. No, this isn't what the plan called for, but I feel good about listening to my body when it says "slow down, for the love of all that's holy!"

                  Hang in there!

yUP effie IT'S NEVER WORTH IT TO PUSH YOUR BODY TO EXHAUSION i HAVE HAD TO TAKE MANY STEPS BACK SOMETIMES YOU NEED 2 WEEKS OF SLOWING DOWN THEN boom YOUR Back to running like a maniac LOL.

I was looking at my runners I thought for sure they woild be worn right down but, even with 9 mionths of exercise on these babies and running a fair bit I hardly any wear just a bit on the right edge of the front foot. I sure hope that's a good thing.

Today is my hill running 2 miles and weight training it's gunna be good but, I know my legs are gunna feel it. I am going to run on a 3% incline that ought to be sufficient for the first time as time goes on I'll increase it.

Take care all ahve a wonderful day

Sarah, you can't tell by looking how much your shoes are worn. How many miles (approx) do you have on them? You should replace them at 300 miles, whether they look worn or not. They lose their shock absorption and cushioning long before they begin to show signs of wear.

When in doubt, replace them! Its a small price to pay to protect your joints.

WOW Betty look at you go girl you're aweosme. I don;t think I have even 200 miles on my runners and my joints are still feeling good so I am thinking my runners are ok. LOL

Today was good I ran 20 minutes uphill steady speed I was dripping like crazy and my breathing was somewhat heavy but, I did the 20 and then I put it to flat and finishe off the 2 miles it was easy after the uphill. I figure if I can get to where the uphill is easy everything elese will come with it.

Girlie, you are sooooooooo right. Uphill is the most challenging. I've discovered that on the trail since I have a major overpass over a 6 lane road that has about a 9% grade .. I do it twice and man, what a workout that is. Plus the trail goes from essentially sea level uphill to 38 feet above sea level. So pretty much a steady incline. I've noticed since I started doing the trail, that my runs on the level are MUCH FASTER .. so there is something to be said for getting those hills done!! YAY! Great job, Sarah!

Monica .. I always wear "protection" when I run, not so much for having to PEE, but the other ... after 13 miles and lots of water... well, you know the rest. I just can't run without my GUARD....Is there anything worse than being on the trail and you get "the urge" .. ugh. Thankfully, McDonalds is on the route! I seldom have to PEE though, cuz I'm basically sweating out all available liquid ... Hang in there, girlfriend and ease up on the water intake before starting to run ..

Thanks Betty! I REALLY want to be able to run, so I'm gonna work this out, one way or another! I guess I could just keep running around in circles, stopping at my house or my sister's! LOL!

I'm glad I came here to read the responses for the week, great questions. I went out today and tried to run up a hill. Talk about ashamed in front of cars passing I know they were laughing, because my 11 year old passed me up quick and I felt like I was stuck on the hill as if I wasn't moving, seriously. But, oh well things will speed up for me, it'll be sooner than later, I'm optimistic and know the positive results of running. How long will it take before I can sprint a hill again? I couldn't help from asking.
