first do you want to count steps since everybody willhave a different size stair case?
if not they can just pledge flights of stairs.

make sure they know they can walk or run based on their physical ability so you don't scare off the not in the best shape folk.

then have them set a goal for the month and go to it in the stair climbing topic.

I think 2big has a great idea, pledging flights would be a great idea, alot of people work in offices and live in apts so they can pledge to walk so many floors a day (if they work on a high floor they can always just walk up the first three..then add onto that as they feel they can?) Even running up and down the stairs at home is good exercise.

I even googled a stairclimbing challenge guideline form on the internet. This is very cool! it has virtual climbs you can do (ie if you climb 3,871 flights you've climbed mt everest!). That virtual climb chart might be kind of fun to post too: http://www.bhf.org.uk/thinkfit/pdf/s...enge_guide.pdf

Yes... all great ideas! Pledging flights, pennies to take up (and then to use to buy yourself a little reward!) and I love the virtual mountain climbing idea! You guys are really inventive!

Am putting my thinking cap on, and if I come up with something, will post. Right now my brain box seems horribly empty of ideas! Do we get bonuses for sliding down the banisters after our climbs???

well i either have a post floating out there in cyberspace or i didn't hit submit.

i like these ideas. i like the link, thanks sadie! i am going to shoot this around in my head for a day or two and then come up with a plan. i told jack about it and he says it is a good idea and thought the ideas presented here were great.

bonuses for sliding down the bannister...........my little handrail is attached to the wall so i would miss out on that but i think we could add some humor to things and say once you have reached the top of mt. everest, you can slide down the bannister and strart on climbking the buildings! lol

glad you liked it. sliding down the bannister?? sounds like fun unless you got one of those metal ones and your flight of steps has a landing in it then your leg gets stuck and you flip off. ( can you tell I tried this before LOL)

i will be working on all of this, this week. got the go ahead pretty much....i am saying it's a go ahead and maybe by weeks end, we'll be able to have this organized enough to get folks started in it. keep the idea coming though, i can use them while i work on this.

I can give you ideas but my knees will leave me if I join this one.

are you allowing walking up steps to count too for the out of shape folk as in do the steps to the best of your physical ability or are you letting them count any steps they go up even if they just do it normal walking aND THEY COULD HAVE RUN UP? oops darn cap key!

How about it be steps you normally walk up, you run up (if you can)OR taking flights/steps over and above ones you normally don't take? ie: taking stairs when you normally take escalator elevator etc. I wouldn't count the stairs in my house every time i go up them, since i already go up them all the time: unless i sprint up them, or run up and down them as an exercise. I know that people that live in citys' with subway systems can start taking the stairs rather than the escalator to and from work (i used to do this), or taking the stairs at the mall, in the office, an apt building. hope i'm making sense? This can be an excellent way to start getting exercise for anyone that isn't already.

And of course there is the stairmaster machines for anyone thats a member of a gym with one. I jsut started using it last week, wow is that legwork!!!

Running up stairs you normally walk up sounds good.

Any of you ever see Jamie Oliver slide down his spiral staircase bannister in his first program? Too cool!

Had a day off yesterday as was away on a trip. Back to the grindstone this morning, to the doggies relief!

i think we have to keep this on a level of "do what you can do without killing yourself" kind of thing. i can run .... well, walk fast...up mine so my challenge should be to count those, to make a conscience effort to do them quickly each time. forget it first thing in the morning. i can barely walk, let alone do them fast. there are some members who have 100 + pounds to lose and other health issues. i don't think it would be fair for them to only count running up them. steps instead of elevators, instead of escalators is all a good thing and i think should be encouraged.

thanks for adding to the ideas.

how do we add the stairmaster to this? i am not familiar with the workings of them. do they record your every step?

sorry if you misunderstood Jimmie, I actually just meant that people do what they can but 'over and above' what their normally doing. If they normally take the stairs (like mine in my house) i can choose to run up them, or walk up and down them several times in a row during the day. we can take the running part out as part of a measurement..i was thinking more as an exercise suggestion. but for someone who can't run, they can walk up stairs that they normally wouldn't. I think for there to be any benefit it has to be more than a person is normally doing, and what is comfortable for them to do, that was actually what I meant if that makes sense LOL.

stairmasters do count your steps for you (well mine does).

It would be like the situps challenge (which i failed on lol), you can pick your own target. so many a month etc.

i understand sadiejen. if you aren't going above and beyond in a challenge, then it might not be a challenge. since the stairmaster counts your steps, i think that should be included, don't you?

yesterday i did 30 ball pushups, 70 crunches 40 ball squats, and some leg lifts. nearly killed me not to be able to post and change my siggy. lol

On the stair challenge: Yep I agree... doing what you are able to is the key. A "comfortable increase", without going overboard and coming a cropper.

Still exercising...still walking the dogs... lovely spring days now but oh boy, how the grass grows! Garden's a jungle and it isn't easy to find people to cut it. Hub is too busy with the other house, so I really should learn about garden machinery! Would be great exercise too.
