it's been ages since any goalie was in this thread. how are you guys?

sadie, have you been doing the treadmill at the gym?
sal, what's your exercise been lately? keeping up with the flights? have things slowed down enough that you can change things up a bit?

and where in the world is denise?

i was very proud of myself yesterday. i needed 15.4 miles to complete my jan. mileage challenge and i was just determined to get it done. i biked 16.4 miles to finish it up. it took 75 minutes and i was so tired but so happy to have finishe the challenge with such a good last effort. i've been keeping up with the 160 + flights a week. i've gotten in more most weeks so maybe i won't be doing this in december. maybe i'll finish the mountains a month early! something to shoot for!

i can't weigh and i don't think i've lost or gained. same same and that's cool.

You know Jimmie... I've been meaning to post in here for a couple of days to find out how everyone is! You got here before me!
Congrats on your 16.4 miles! Awesome to finish the challenge with a nice ooomph!

As for me, I've been doing my usual routine (dog walks and exercise) but have differentiated the exercise routine by doing a dvd I taped from the TV. It's an Italian ski champion (I think), who does a real 'push-your-heart-rate-up' fitness lesson every day. Half hour at the grindstone! It's cool though and I've gotten a couple of hand weights and an exercise elastic.
All this, because after Christmas I had a whooshie... but in the wrong direction!!!! My weight shot up by two pounds and it wasn't water weight because it stayed up there! So... not liking that trend (even though I'm still around my goal) and wanting to nip it in the bud, I dropped my glass of wine in the evening (sorely missed) and cut a few carbs, plus the extra energetic exercise.
So far so good and the scale is inching ever so slowly downwards. I don't look at daily weights, rather the trend over time as I rather up and down like a yo yo. Please all keep fingers crossed that I get back to where I was!!!

How's everyone else getting along? Sadie? Denise?

i'm not sadie and i'm not denise but i'll come chat for the day.

sal, that's exactly what we are suppose to do. keep our eye on things and when we see a bit of a gain, nip it in the bud immediately! i know you average your weight over the week so i know you keep close watch on it. you will be back to the right place in no time. you're disciplined so i know this will happen.

did you know that higgies was thinking of upping his goal weight now? as he works out and builds more muscle the weight is being added on. he's healthy and things are fine but i think the number thing and goal just mess with our heads.

i think some of my gains are water meaning i am not gettting enough some days. some of it is exercise. i was really good in january. some of my problem is age. some of my problem is portions. i do well all day but when i sit down to eat at night, i just want to sit and enjoy my meal with jack and it seems full comes too quickly.

jess posted a band exercise called Lying 45 degree abduction with band. it's the exercise of the day feb 1

Oh heavens Jimmie...do I know exactly what you mean by wanting to sit and enjoy a meal in the evening and "full" coming too quickly! Evenings are for enjoying a meal, relaxation and good company. It's harder to be disciplined then (thanks for your nice words ).

I'd missed that exercise of the day. Tks for posting. Unfortunately my exercise band is the flat kind that you wrap around your hands to block...but not a circular one. I looked for one with handles, but couldn't find it locally.

Actually, lately I haven't done anything with it 'cos I've gone back to my regular exercise routine. I've got something amiss with one knee, so thought I'd avoid the heavier workout for a while. Not sure what's up with it... can't remember knocking or straining it but it hurts a bit on the inner side when I put my heel down. Odd. Been several days now and it's not going away despite resting for the last couple of days (purposefully) as I was away from home. Will have to go to the docs if it doesn't improve.

Morning Ladies, I haven't been here in ages! Been keep up with my weight routine and pilates, and hoping soon I can once again run outside. I've been taking my glucosamine and it really seems to have helped my knee.

When I get up to the cottage every weekend, i've been trying out the x-country skiing which is a great workout. Actually, just putting on the snow pants, jacket, boots, scarf, hat mitts then trying to walk out the door is a big workout! LOL no lie, i'm usually winded after walking 20 yrds .

Today will be a snowshovelling day here for exercise. We got a bit of snow, about 6" and it's drifted so it should be a good workout. It makes me laugh, they're making a huge deal about the 'big storm' on the news...6"?? hmmm you'd think being in Canada we wouldn't be so panicked about a bit of snow!

sadiejen, we got more snow than you. about 12 or 13 inches in our yard. shoveling? maybe i will but lets not take bets on it.

sal, are your knee problems any better since you reported that last post?

i've busy with flights and got mont blanc done yesterday and felt it big time last night. i've been keeping tabs on minutes with the stability ball. changed that challenge up a bit because it really tapered off last month. any ball exercise is good for the challenge and instead of counting push ups, we're loggiing minutes and counting any ball exercise. i'm enjoying the change.

off to get the stats chart done for the day.

              • Re: The Goalie's Challenge Exercise Thread

I think we ended up with about 10" now that I've shovelled it. Took me an hour and a half, but according to mydailyplate.com where i'm journalling now that's 338 cals an hour! I actually was sweating like crazy, and the dog enjoyed catching the snow iw as throwing.

Jimmie it makes me laugh how a bit of snow can paralyze this city. I swear sometimes Toronto is an embarassment to Canada in the winter! in 1999 we had a snowstorm that dropped over a foot of snow and our mayor called in the army to help shovel. Unfortunately we became the laughing stock of the country and have never lived that one down .

My husband drives a plow for the city so I have no choice but to shovel because he'll be working long hours, and the last thing he wants to do when he gets home is shovel snow. funny thing is after spending 1.5 hours shovelling, a sidewalk plow came around 30 mins later. so it was mostly a waste of time. . Oh well, i needed the exercise!

Wow... I have friends in the US and Canada and they're ALL shovelling snow these days! You too it seems, jimmie and sadie. Great exercise!! Don't go getting chillblains though!
Funny that a city in Canada should be paralysed by snow sadie! Not at all what one would expect!

Jimmie... how're you feeling after your mammoth effort to finish Mont Blanc? I think I'd be jelly (jello to you americans!) after doing 220 flights!

My knee is up and down thanks jimmie. I had a CAT scan done yesterday and should have results next monday or tuesday. Today I can walk without limping which is good.
Am still doing exercise, dog walks and stairs...because exercise doesn't seem to affect it either way...but I have to favour the other leg a lot. Hope that one doesn't give out!!

                  Anyone heard from Denise?

How's everyone doing these days? I'm hoping the snow's let up for you, over the pond. Now's the time in winter when I begin to simply long for spring... Anyone else feel that way?

My knee is much better, so am back on track with all exercise and stuff. Considering getting a step again, for the flights challenge. Knee CAT scan seems fine, so am relieved.

Did I mention before, that I got a couple of small exercise weights (1 kg each) and an exercise band? They're cool and make a difference to my morning workouts.

Have finally sorted out my horrid, post Christmas whooshie in the wrong direction, thank heavens! I'd put on a couple of pounds overnight (and they stayed, so wasn't water weight or anything) after the Christmas largess (legal largess of course, but still too much of everything for a little too long).

Scale trend has been downward for the last three weeks. Yippee!

I didn't want to go back to induction (saving that safe haven for real emergencies) so did it very slowly and just cut out the evening glass of wine, plus some cheese, and generally dropped between 5-10 g carbs per day. Calories dropped too, as a result. It's taken more than a month, but the weight has now come off and today I hit an all time weight low! (though I think that was more a "blip" than a real weight loss). I like the downward trend though...but don't want to go too far. Now the nice part comes: Gently adding a few treats back... "gently" being the operative word.

do we still have this thread? lol we're not real good at getting in here are we? lets say it's because we are so active that we just haven't had time. yeah, that's it.

we had a nice day yesterday and 2 days now above freezing so the drive is clear, the streets are clear and the weather is tolerable now. winter isn't over and we got some cold air on the way but i think the worst is behind us.

sal, i'm glad the cat scan results came out so well. good good!
the weights do help. i've had to up the weight of my dumbbells because the others were just getting too easy. i need to get my band out and use it with my ball. i check out the sparkpeople site to get new exercises. jess posts but i look for specific ones for the ball.

i gained too. it's been a problem over the winter months and i have to say it wasn't from eating wrong. just too much of a good thing maybe? i'm watching closer and have lost 2 pounds this week. and my motto still stands, blame hormones for everything!

i'm on my way up kilimanjaro. it's been a long time since sadie climbed that so i can't follow her footsteps. but maybe i'll see a discarded water bottle at the top. speaking of flights..... i need to go get mine done for the day.

Hello ladies! I'm still here! Haven't seen Denise in quite some time though Sal ....

I started back to the gym finally, despite having said every week since Xmas that I was going back LOL. Boy am I in some kinda pain! Every muscle in my body is sore, but it's a good sore . My first run in a few weeks on the tread mill there as well, and I went 25 mins straight! I'm going to try to do my runs there for the next while, it's so much easier on my knees than running on pavement. I do get my outdoor exercise still though..the dog is making sure of that

Sal, Is Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements available there? Jimmie and I discussed it a page or 2 back...it has been a godsend for my knees. I don't normally believe in natural remedies for stuff like that..but this really does work. you can pretty much buy it anywhere here..but maybe there you can check a health food store. It has alot of benefits, but helping joint pain is it's best...and it really does work.

More snow on the way here today...not very much though, the cities around us will get more as usual. I think maybe a couple of inches expected, so not sure if I will get some snowshovelling in..I don't think my muscles are up to that today!

sal, you look like you lost half of yourself in your siggy pics. what a great job you did!

sadie, good to see you went back to the gym. i've heard so many bad things about running on pavement. i don't know how anyone runs in the first place. not my cup of tea at all. speed walking i think i get into but not running.

we are suppose to get a bit of snow and some rain. i wish spring would get here. this has been the longest winter for me. winter down home lasts about 1 1/2 days.

Sadie... thanks for the head's up about what to take for joint pain. I must check with my health store to see if they have those, here. Actually, knee is much improved now...but there might be another time!

I feel your pain, after your return to the gym! Don't overdo it, all in a rush.

Jimmie... thanks for the nice comment about my pics. Actually, I somehow managed to squash my head in the "after" one. Might go back to the old one. Am having difficulty getting pics loaded horizontally, rather than stacked... the only way I can do it is to make a collage...but then I tend to squash the taller one to fit them together.

Anyone know how to make a photo collage???? I only have "paint" and the windows pic manager. Just spent over an hour trying to do the collage again... and got precisely nowhere!

                              I think I need a "computer 101" course!
